My dear Mr. Chang:

Your boy is leaving us this fall to enter Yale University, and it seems only proper that I should send you a word expressing our genuine regret at losing him from our number and our appreciation of the spirit and accomplishment of the boy while a member of this school. I have always found Sinley a gentleman in the best sense of the word, faithful in his endeavors, and responsive to every suggestion offered for this welfare. Although it is, of course, proper that he should go on with college work at this time, it is with a feeling of keen personal regret that I am forced to see him sever the Andover connection. In my judgment, Sinley is a boy who has within him the possibilities of becoming a strong and helpful influence in the home land when he returns. If he holds to the ideals which appear to have controlled his purpose and action to date, you should have reason to be proud of him in the years to come. Although the boy is no longer a member of the school, I shall be ready and glad always to did him or you in any way I can to insure that they American education and experience shall be as valuable as possible to the boy.

With personal regards, believe me

Very sincerely yours.

My dear Mr. Chang:

I am very grateful to you for your kind and generous letter of January 14th. It has been a real pleasure to do what little I have done for your boy during his stay at Andover, for he has proved himself in every way worthy of our confidence and esteem. We have welcomed a fairly large group of newcomers from China this year; and I take particular satisfaction in feeling that they can look to your son for the good advice that I know he is ready to give and find in him an inspiring example of the strong and virile character that it will be to their profit to emulate.

Again thanking you for your friendly and generous letter, and with kind regards, believe me

My dear Mr.Chen:

I hope your letter of June 24th, and shall be very glad to assume such responsibility as I can for Mr. Chang while he remained with us, or longer if you desire. As you have inferred, I have always felt a deep interest in these boys who come to us from China and who embody in their character and purpose so many traits which our American boys would do well to emulate. Please let me know if you have any special suggestions or directions by which I may be guided in dealing with Mr. Chang.

With kindest personal regards, believe me

Very sincerely yours.

Let me thank you for your note advising me of your conferences with Messrs. Chang and Euston.

I note your suggestion in regard to making engagements in advance wherever possible. We will do our best to see that this is done, though it is not always easy. My dear Miss Reed:

Allow me to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 22nd inst. I find on looking up the matter in the Treasurer’s office that there is a rebate of $26.00 due Kwong on his room rent. In accordance with your instructions I am enclosing herewith a check for the above amount made payable to Miss Agnes Kwong,

I, too, am sorry that we were not able to give the boy just what he needs at present. I trust, however, that he will make good progress in the Springfield High School and that at some future time we shall be able to welcome him back to Andover prepared to make a record that will be satisfactory to all concerned. Please extend to him my best wishes.

Very sincerely yours,

My dear Miss Reed:

I have your letter of February 26th, and am enclosing herewith a statement of Alfred Kwong’s account and a cheek for $283.97, the balance remaining in my hands ; and the check has been made out to Agnes Kwong, as requested.

The policy of the school, as stated in our catalogue, is to make no remissions on tuition charges where boys drop out during the school year. The tuition is paid in instalments, however, so that those who issue before the second instalment is due are not charged for the full amount for the year. In exceptional cases, I am allowed by the Trustees to make special remissions, so that the boys concerned are not actually charged for a longer period than they were formally connected with the school. It seems to me only fair to grant this exception in Kwong’s case; for neither he nor we could tell in advance just who well fitted he was to meet our requirements here. Under the circumstances, therefore, I have asked our Treasurer to send you a check representing the balance remaining over the charge for the time of the boy’s actual connection with the school.

I trust that Alfred is getting on well in the new environment; and I only wish that we might look forward to the opportunity of welcoming him back here at some later date. We have had many similar cases in recent years, and in the majority of these cases the boys involved have returned to us and completed their careers with real credit.

Very sincerely yours.

My dear Miss Reed:

I am enclosing herewith report of Alfred’s work for the past term. As you will note, the record is one of practically complete failure. This does not mean that the boy has not tried; for he has unquestionably done the best he knew how, but he is also unquestionably not fitted at this time to meet the requirements of this particular school.

After experience with nearly a hundred Chinese boys in recent years I am convinced that in this particular case the only satisfactory solution of our problem is to place Kwong in a small school for the balance of the current year. Under such conditions he should emphasize especially his work in English; though it may be possible for him to take some other subject in the way of foundation work. At the end of that time I shall expect him to be qualified to resume his connection with this school, and with the expectation of meeting our requirements in a satisfactory way. He would gain time in the end by such a course and would be spared that inevitable discouragement which must result from continued failure to secure results from well-meant effort.

I am sure you will appreciate the spirit in which this recommendation is made. If I can in any way assist you in arranging for the boy’s further work at this time, please do not hesitate to let me know. We shall lose him with real regret. His spirit has been of the finest, and I personally shall be keenly disappointed if he is not able to return to us at some later date and complete the work of this school.

Very sincerely yours,

Mr dear Miss Reed:

I have your note of November 3rd, and have talked over Kwong’s situation with the various and the class officer concerned to see if a proper readjustment can be made in the boy’s schedule. Some changes, I understand, have already been put into operation.
We have also arranged to grant the boy permission to visit his sister at Abbot Academy every week; although technically he is not eligible for excuses of this kind.

Allow me to acknowledge receipt of your letter of October 11th enclosing check for $500. to be credited to the account of young Kwong. I will do my best to see that the young man keeps his expenses within reasonable limits. My dear Sir:

Your interesting letter of July 27th is before me. Only this morning your boy has been here in my office talking over his schedule of work, and mapping out his plans for the school year. I have always taken, as you probably know, a keen interest in the Chinese boys who have come to us and among whom I now count many warm friends. We have several find Chinese boys in the school at the present time, so that Alfred will not feel lonely, I am confident. We shall do everything in our power to make his stay at Andover pleasant and profitable in the highest degree and I can assure you that while here he will come under strong and helpful Christian influence.

If at any time you have occasion to make suggestions that will aid us in dealing with your boy and his problems in the most satisfactory way. Please do not hesitate to let me hear from you. I desire to cooperate with you to the fullest extent in everything that may serve the best interests of your son.

Very sincerely yours,
