My dear Mrs. Calhoun:

I have your friendly note of December 28 and shall naturally be pleased to receive Admiral Tsai’s token of good will, to which you refer but which has not yet appeared.

Of all the Chinese with whom it has been my privilege to come into intimate contact, and I have served as American guardian now for some fifty or sixty, I doubt if any have proved so attractive and appealing as these two recent comers from Admiral Tsai’s family. Helen Tsai, particularly, has won the hearts and esteem of every one who has had the privilege to meet her. Both are due to return to their schools this week.

I recall most delightfully the friendly greetings extended to me by you and Mr. Calhoun at the Legation in Peking when I was a visitor in that wonderfully interesting city in the winter of 1913. Dr. Ferguson, I believe, introduced me to you at the time, and I can still recall how my first visit there tended to dispel the natural loneliness and homesickness of one who had wandered for the first time in his life so far afield.

Wishing you all the best blessings of the new year, believe me

Very sincerely yours

Let me thank you for your very nice letter received this morning. I am interested to know that you are hoping to come
to Andover next fall; and I certainly trust that yon will be able to meet the entrance requirements in a satisfactory way. I am planning to come over to Dummer within the next few days in order to let Major Davy talk to the boys about our summer military camp at Andover; and I shall be glad to make use of that opportunity to talk over your plans with you.

Mr. P.Y.Liang
Keystone Academy
Factoryville, Pa.

My dear Mr. Liang:

I have this morning received your two letters of January 14th and January 15th and your formal application for admission to Phillips Academy. We regularly drop a few boys at the close of the fall term, a larger number indeed than is generally admitted at the opening of the winter term. This year a few boys have recently left us to take up military services, hence we have several vacancies in the school at the present time. So far as our accommodations are concerned therefore we can and will be glad to welcome you and your friends.

The question which chiefly concerns me relates to you previous school work and your chances of meeting successfully our scholarship requirements here. It is not easy to adjust a newcomer’s schedule to our own scheme of work when the adjustment has to be made in the middle of a school year. If you are willing to leave the final arrangement of the schedule in our hands, we will, of course, do the best we can for you; though we cannot promise to continue in all cases the subjects you have been studying to date. The catalogue, which I am mailing you under separate cover contains full information as to the nature and extent of our various courses of study.

If you decide to enter the school it is important that you should do so at the earliest moment. The essential requirement for admission is a satisfactory record from your last school. Re assume that all newcomers will be able to provide the customary letters of honorable dismissal and submit evidence shewing that they are leaving their previous schools for good and sufficient reasons.

We have six Chinese boys in the school this year. By a queer coincidence the last letter I opened in this morning’s mail before reaching yours was that of an old Chinese friend of mine, now living in Hong- kong, who graduated from this school some thirty-five years ago, and a man who entertained me royally several years ago when I traveled in China.

Please let me hear from you promptly in ease you decide to
change schools at this time and satisfactory arrangements can	be made, so that you may be able to start at the earliest possible date under the new conditions

		Very sincerely yours,

Dear Sir:

I have your letter of July tenth. Since the basis of your difficulties in your studies is unquestionably your limited knowledge of the English language, I wonder if you would not do as well in my brother's small school at Mont Vernon, New Hampshire, as you could possibly do anywhere else for the coming year. Such an arrangement would permit you to carry on work which would so far as possible parallel the work of our own classes here, so that if you desired to return to Andover later the way would be made easy for you.

If this plan does not appeal to you, I would suggest Dummer Academy as the next best place to fit your peculiar needs. This school is located in South Byfield, Mass., as you probably know.
I am asking the treasurer's office to see that your deposit of twenty-five dollars made on the room assignment is returned. I am also asking them to have your trunks taken care of until you decide where you wish to have them sent.

Let me know if I can help you further.

Very sincerely yours,

I am mailing you, as requested, a copy of our latest catalogue in the back of which will be found an application form. If you are thinking at all of coming to Andover in the fall, you should plan to take our entrance examinations on June 17th and 18th. We shall be glad to welcome you here, and I hope that you will find no difficulty in meeting the tests. The Chinese delegation is a bit small this year, though I have applications already on file for several new Chinese boys who hope to join us next fall.

1 have your letter of April 1st. Your final term report showed such distinct improvement during the term as to call forth the hearty approval of your instructors. While your English is still stumbling block, we have come to believe that you will probably gain as much, if not mere, by remaining here than you would by changing schools We shall expect therefore to welcome you back next term. Mr. Poong Shan Look

My dear Mr. Look:

I am enclosing herewith a statement showing your boy’s expenditures while he was at Andover, at least in so far as any disbursements have been made by me of the funds placed in my hands. The statement shows a balance in the boy’s favor of 311.43, American money, for which I have asked our local bank to furnish me the necessary draft on Hongkong. I enclose the same herewith and shall be pleased to have you acknowledge its receipt. The individual receipts for the various items mentioned are in my possession also and will be forwarded to you if desired.

King proved a very attractive fellow to deal with personally. He was always a gentleman and amenable to school discipline and rules. A lack of serious purpose, however, has been characteristic of him and his tendency to enjoy the full all social and material things with the accompanying readiness to spend money freely may be said to be his chief weakness; but once the boy has settled down to hard work in business or profession, I believe that the best traits of character, of which he has many, will come to the front and will aid him making for himself a career that will be successful and of real value to the world.

The report of the boy’s work for the spring term, which I enclose, indicates how far short King fell of meeting our scholarship requirements. We found it necessary to limit his work to two subjects that he might concentrate on these. Even this requirement proved out of his reach and you will note that the record is one of practically complete failure so far as scholastic accomplishment is concerned. The boy evidently needs closer personal supervision and more individual guidance than are possible in a large school such as ours. I hope that we may hear more gratifying reports of his progress in the days ahead.

Very sincerely yours.

                <text>Dear Sir:

On September 2d I mailed a letter addressed to Mr. Thomas Lee South College, Amherst, Mass. Several days later Mr. Lee telephoned me that the letter had not reached him, and that on inquiring at your office he had been assured that it was not there. Later, on that very day, I received a communication from you stating that the letter was in your office unclaimed, and asking me for directions in regard to its disposition, and for postage to cover its return if I desired it to be sent back to me. The notice stated that otherwise the letter would be sent to the dead letter office.

I am wholly at a loss to understand the situation. The letter was mailed in one of our regular school envelopes, on the upper left-hand corner of which is printed— "After 5 days, return to Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass.” I sent you instructions to have it returned, and it has this morning been received. The postage which I forwarded by request was not used, as naturally there was no occasion for it to be. As I cannot help feeling that the matter has been improperly handled, I shall be pleased to receive further information from you by way of explanation.

Very truly yours,</text>
