Accept my thanks for your very kind letter received this morning. I am sorry, indeed, to learn that John reached home in the grip of measles, but it is satisfaction to know that no more serious results have developed. We feared that one or two cases might develop in this way at the time when the term closed. Under the circumstances we will accept the XX a judgement as to the proper time for John to return to school. When he returns arrangements will be made to aid him in making up the XX XX by his enforced absence.

Trusting that you will enjoy a most pleasant voyage and a most delightful visit with your son in the far east, believe me.

Very sincerely yours.

Dear Mr. Mitchell,
I am sorry that I am not able to report at the time sufficient improvement in your boy’s work to justify us in releasing him from probation. In some respects, there has been improvement, but it has been slight and it seems still to be a question whether the gain is going to be sufficient to make it wise for us to permit the boy to remain here permanently. We have decide to extend the period of probation for the present in the hope that the slight changes for the better already mentioned may become more marked as the days go by.
Very truly yours.

My dear Mrs. Mitchell

I am glad Lo learn from your letter received this morning that you have decided to send your boy to Andover next fall. I shall be only too glad to aid you as far as I can in completing arrangements for the boy’s admisison.

The Abbot House and Bancroft Cottage are both good buildings. Unfortunately, however, the Bancroft has no single Is rooms or suites, and the single rooms Abbot House are on the fourth floor, up under the roof „ and far from attractive. There are several single rooms and suites in the Katon and Andover Cottages, and these in my judgment are about the best that can be had, though their desirability renders them as a rule easy prey to the old boys. The next choice in my judgment, if a single room is essential, would be Phillips or Bartist Mall. If you will kindly indicate on the enclosed blank the general nature of your preference, I shall be glad to do my best to make a satisfactory selection when the rooms are finally assigned. By applying at this early date you will be able to secure almost the first choice after the old boys have been pleased. Please feel free to advise me if I can at any time be of further service to you in this or in any other matter connected with your boy's admission to the school, and believe me,

Very truly yours

My dear Mrs. Mitchell,

It has been a source of a very great disappointment to me to find that John has recently developed an attitude of carelessness in his work that has placed him in a very dangerous situation with relation to his standing in the school. The spirit of play, perfectly natural and perfectly legitimate, has apparently been allowed to run riot with the consequent undermining of school work and school standing. Because of the extent to which this spirit has developed and the attendant results our teachers feel that the case should be handled rather severely for the boy’s interest. In consequence, we have withdrawn for the balance of the term the privilege which we are accustomed to grant our boys in the ways of out of town and evening excuse, and have warned John that a continuation for his present attitude and his present poor work might eventually XX him to a point where it would not be wise or possible for us to permit him to continue his connection with the school.

It is with the deepest regret that I find it necessary to report such a situation to you, but I am very hopeful that our combined efforts will furnish all the pressure and incentive needed to spur the boy to greater effort with the improved results that are easily within his ability secure, and that we all so earnestly desire to see. I do not believe that John has begun to realise how seriously he has allowed his work to be impaired by his interest in play and attraction outside his studies.
With kindest personal regards, believe me

Very truly yours.

My dear Mrs. Mitchell,

Your very kind letter reached me several days ago. I have had your boy’s case very much in mind, and am glad to say that reports from his instructors indicates that he himself has appreciated the mistakes which he has been making, and has settled down to much steadier and harder work than formerly. The natural results have followed and his classroom standing has improved steadily. I had a good talk with the boy recently and he seemed to fully appreciate the situation, and to desire to make good the lose. I believe he is succeeding.

Very sincerely yours.

On my return to Andover I find your letter of the 20th ultima, which Mr Bancroft has acknowledged in my absence- I expect to be here until Saturday of this week and shall be glad to see you in Andover if you find it practicable to make th journey. Unfortunately I shall be too busy to accept your kind invitation to call on you. I am very anxious, however, to talk over the Wong situation with you for while I have not the personal interest in the family which you have, I am deeply interested in all of our Chinese students and feel a large amount of responsibility for then in connection with their life and work in this far away country. No one of the numerous Chinese boys we have had during the last two or three years impressed me at the outset mere favorably than did Wong and hence my disappointment at his apparent failures is the greater.

Thanking you for your frank letter and trusting that I may have the opportunity at an early date to talk ever the situation with you in person, believe me,

Very sincerely yours,

                <text>My dear Mrs. Pope:

Your very interesting though somewhat disturbing letter reached me in the midst of the rush of our closing exercises, entrance examinations., etc . and I have been wholly unable to give it the thought and attention it deserves. Even now I must write hurriedly, deeply as I feel on the question at issue. 1 sent for Wong after reviving your letter, and gave him some fatherly advice without attempting to qualify the terms of my disapproval of his act. Frankly, the boy has been a a great disappointment to me, as he has been to you. Indeed, the same must be said, I regret to add, of several of our Chinese boys. I do not know whether my advice accomplish anything or not, but I begged and urged Wong to observe the ordinary standards of decency and honor and stand by his original agreement with the owners of the cottage. I must sincerely hope that he has done so. Nor do I wonder at your anxiety and disgust.

This is not the first evidence I have had during the year that has convinced me that Wong has not yet developed a clear perspective in regard to many things. I believe the boy has good material in him, and though I have been extremely fond of all of the Chinese boys we have had here, Wong appealed to me at the outset more strongly than did any of the others. Hence I am the more disappointed to discover his shortcomings,. I think the boy in this particular instance you have mentioned should at least be held for every penny that has been put into the house by the owners on the expectation of the carrying out of his promise. Before the summer is over I shall endeavor to find an opportunity to see you in person and talk over the whole situation . For one thing, much as I would regret to seem to break up Wong a home, I am convinced that the responsibility and distractions of a wife and child and a sister who comes and goes apparently without restraint have all combined to interfere very seriously with the boy’s education. I do hope that some other arrangement for the coming year may be possible.

Thanking you for writing me so frankly in regard to this matter, which I am frank to say trembles me fully as much as it does you, believe me,

Very sincerely yours

Mrs. W.C. Russell
Whittier School

My dear Mrs. Russell:

The enclosed letter, which I received yesterday from Helen Tsai's father, will, I am sure, prove of interest to you, and hence I am taking the liberty of sending it for your inspection. Please return it at your convenience.

I have just written Mr. Tsai that I am sure you are carrying out conscientiously his expressed wishes for Helen's education and development and that you have taken a personal interest in Helen of a far greater and more helpful character than could be reasonably expected of any headmistress.

If you have any suggestions to make about the Christmas holidays as a result of your talks with Helen or from remarks she may have made in year presence, please do not hesitate to let me have them. Mrs.Nye is urging vigorously that both Helen and her brother pass the holiday season with her in South Weymouth. Helen has always told me that she hoped to invest most of the vacation in Washington, but, as the Chinese Minister, so far as I know, has not yet returned to this country I am not sure that his wife will be ready to extend the hospitality that had been intended. I am a little puzzled, therefore, to know Just what to plan for these children.

Wishing you a truly merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year, believe me

Very sincerely yours,

Thank you for your note and the slip showing the personal expenditure made by you in Helen Tsai’s behalf. I can see that the deposit which I placed with you has already been exhausted, and Hence I am enclosing another check for the same amount, $50.00, and to be used for the same purpose. I can readily understand that the purchases indicated were necessary, but, as Helen had assured me that she had all, if not more, furnighings than were necessary for the school year, I had assumed that such items could be avoided. Evidently I took too much for granted, as did she.
