My dear Mr. Shao:

I have your interesting letter of October 8, and appreciate very much your friendly interest in Mr.Tu.

I had not learned that Mr. Tu had gone back to the Huntingdon school, and your letter brings me the first intimation of this. The fact is that Tu practically never takes me into his confidence unless he is in trouble, and that is one of the chief reasons why I can’t extend to him the confidence and trust that I should like to and that I am regularly able to extend without reservation to my Chinese wards.
My last instructions from Tu’s father wore to the effect that if his son was to remain in this country, it was to be on the understanding that he was give up his high school studies, for which he is already far too old and secure a position in some factory like the Ford factory, suggested by the boy himself,- in order to prepare himself for a worth while position in China. I myself felt strongly that Tu had been wasting his time and his father’s money by staying on at a school like Huntington with boys years his junior, and though it was my belief that he ought to return to hie home, I consented to the father1 a suggestion that he be allowed to remain a bit longer if - and only if - he took such a position as I have mentioned above. Tu promised me that he would make every effort to secure such a position and that is the last word I have had from him. Under the circumstance, I am sure you will appreciate that I have a more heavy responsibility to the father than to the boy at this moment, and that I do not, therefore, feel justified in misusing further the father's money in order that Tu may continue work which both his father and I agree is not suited to him at his resent age and with his clear look of intellectual interest.

Very sincerely yours.

Mr Wong Vung Lung

My dear Wong:

Your letter reached me this morning. I appreciate your situation and the difficulties attending the settlement of your bills. I have found that several of our Chinese boys have experienced the same trouble, owing to the poor exchange in China just now Holt and Company will be reasonable. I am sure, in view of the patience which they have already shown I hope, however, that it may be possible for you to make a settlement before long.
My latest reports from Jimmie Lee indicate that he is hoping to answer Exeter in the near future, I imagine he found it pretty lonely up in Vermont.

I shall he interested to hear how your work at Purdue is progressing and I shall be disappointed if the year does not prove in every way a most happy and satisfactory one to you – You boys have a wonderful opportunity to do a great work in the world when you return to China, and in order that that opportunity may be fully accepted, it is imperative that you should make the best use of every hour and of every chance offered you here in America. The new and greater China of the future will look to you for leadership, and she must not look in vain. It is because I feel this so strongly that I feel more than the usual interest in the Chinese boys that come to us. Frankly, I was a good deal disappointed in your record at Andover, but I realise that the poor results were not altogether your fault. and I most earnestly hope that the weak spots been strengthened and the dangerous tendencies eliminated.

With the best of wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and a most successful and influential future. Believe me.

Very sincerely yours.

My dear Mr.Van

Thank you for your postal with its friendly greetings.
I am glad to hear from you again and know something about you. I certainly hope that before you return to China you may find it possible to run up this way again. If you are able to do this, don’t hesitate to come and see me. I shall be only too glad of the opportunity to renew your acquaintance and have a parting word with you before you return to your home.

With all best wishes, believe me,
Very sincerely yours,

My dear Mr. Tung:

Thank yon for your letter of September 15 and a copy of the
telegram earlier sent me.

Admiral Tsai’s two children arrived in Andover yesterday with their friend Mr. Young. They are most friendly, and I am sure that I am going to enjoy new contacts with them. Unfortunately most of the schools do not open until later in the month and some early in October. It seems clear that both of the newcomers should have a year in smallschools, what we call the home school type, where they can stress English and hence be qualified a year later to meet all of the demands in larger schools where they will be thrown naturally on their own resources and will be required to have a good working knowledge of the language. This is the policy that I have pursued with many of my Chinese wards in the past, and I have consequently arranged to place the Tsais into good schools of the character mentioned. Both of these schools are scheduled to open some two weeks hence but have agreed to make provision for these foreigners at least a week is advance of the dates of opening. In the meantime, I shall allow them to stay here in Andover, probably at the Phillips Inn which is a quiet little hotel controlled by the school just on the edge of our own school campus and is every way a wholesome place for them to be.

Very sincerely yours

I am glad to Inform you that I have just heard from Mr. Lee and that he acknowledges the justice of your bill. Apparently the misunderstanding has been largely my own, and it arose from the fact that Mr. Lee was almost a year late in sending me for payment bills contracted by him for board last year. I assumed that your bills and those referred to covered the same periods, and hence I was unable to explain the situation satisfactorily. My letters written to him asking for light on the subject were not answered, and it is only within a day or two that I have finally heard from him and favorably. I am only waiting now to receive the bill properly O.K.'d and on its receipt I shall send you promptly a check to cover the amount in question. I deeply regret the delay.

Your letter of March 7th is before me. The matter which concerns you has by no means slipped my mind. Indeed only two days ago I wrote a further letter to Mr. Lee at New Haven, asking to reply at once to my earlier communication which he seemingly had ignored. I do not mean to let the matter rest until I have discovered just what the situation actually is. At the same time I cannot naturally be expected to pay at once a bill which covers board for a period during which board has already been paid for by me to another person. I shall not let the matter drop until I have discovered what is wrong.

In the meantime, you are at perfect liberty, of course, to take the matter to Mr. Stokes, to anyone else who can help you. I deeply regret the unfortunate delay which has occurred in the disentanglement of the situation; but I must confess that I am a good deal handicapped in dealing with it at this distance, and am at very much of a loss at present to understand the unusual complications that seem to exist.

Very sincerely yours,

Dear Mrs. Young:

The enclosed report of John’s work tells a somewhat familiar story of carelessness and lack of endeavor. At the same time there have been spasmodic evidences of interest with consequent temporary improvement. If we did not realize how immature the boy actually is, we would feel it necessary to require his withdrawal. As it is, we still hope to be able to bring him to his senses and to get him fairly started. Consequently, we are ready to make further efforts in this direction and shall allow him to continue with us with the hope and expectation that he will realize the danger of his present course and will show himself more of a man in the fure. His period of probation will be continued, and we must of necessity reserve the right to require his withdrawal without further notice in case he clearly shows himself unwilling to meet our requirements. We shall of course do everything in our power to prevent such a catastrophe.

Very truly yours.

My dear Mrs. Young:

To my great satisfaction, John’s instructors report considerable improvement in the boy’s work and attitude this term. In the hops that encouragement will help the case still more we have decided to withdraw John from probation, and to extend to him for the balance of year the full privileges of the school. At the same time, we believe it to be wise to defer until the end of the school year the final decision bearing on the boy’s return next fall. It is still a question in our minds whether your brother has developed sufficient maturity and purpose in his work to make it wise for him to continue his course. A year in a seller, stricter school may seem necessary. Of course, xx hope that he will be able to go on with us and finish his course without interruption. If any other than this is recommended, it will be done wholly on the basis of what we believe the boy's best interests and welfare demand.

Very sincerely yours,
Principal

My dear Mrs. Nye:

Thank you for your good letter received this morning.

I have not yet heard definitely from the Tsai children as to their vacation plans, though, when I last saw them, they were both hoping that they would receive an invitation to pass at least part of their Christmas holiday season with the Chinese Minister and his wife in Washington. If the children themselves do not advise you of their plans, I shall be glad to do so a bit later when I became more familiar with them.

Very sincerely yours.
