My dear Sirs:

I am deeply interested in the case of Mr. Hin Wa Tung who has recently been placed in your charge. The boy’s brother, one of our former pupils, sent me recently a form of "agreement" which he asked me to sign and return to you. While I am in no way directly concerned with the financial affairs of these two boys, I have been in close touch with the family for a number of years and have frequently acted as their American adviser in matters relating to their education. Under the circumstances I shall be ready and glad to help out in any way within my power; but I should appreciate very much a word from you in advance, giving me some idea of the nature of the boy’s trouble, the prospects for the future, the probable expense incurred while at the McLean Hospital, etc. Please advise me fully in order that I may communicate direct with the boy’s family in China.

I might add that the family is one of the oldest and best in China and will unquestionably be responsible for all legitimate expenses incurred because of the disability of your patient.

Very sincerely yours,</text>

My dear Dr. Packard:

I am very grateful to you for your frank letter. In regard to Hin Wa Yang, but am sorry indeed to learn that the boy’s condition appears to be so serious. It will be some time before we can get in touch with the family in China; but in the meantime I feel that there will be no question about thse approval of Mr. Yung’s parents of the course we have taken and of their readiness to meet all proper financial obligations. At the coming meeting of our trustees, some two weeks hence, I shall ask authority to assume responsibility for the hospital debt, pending the receipt of advices from the boy’s home.

My dear Yung:

Please excuse me for not answering your letter more promptly; but I have been away from Andover a great deal during the last two weeks, and my mail has suffered in consequence.

I can’t tell you how sorry I am for you and your brother, too, in this emergency which has arisen. I wrote to the superintendent of the McLean Hospital recently, asking him to give me a frank and full statement of his opinion regarding the case. He tells me that it will be a number of weeks before anything very definite can be determined, as the doctors must watch the boy and note his development and such changes as may take place from day to day. I know that he will have the best of care, and I have asked the superintendent to make as much of a personal matter out of the case as he can, as a favor to me. You cannot help worrying, of course, but I hope you will realise that everything possible is being done for the boy and that if a cure can be effected, it will be done.

With kindest regards and every good wish to you, believe me always

Most sincerely yours,

My dear Mr. Yung:

Many thanks for your kind letter received this morning and for your thoughtfulness in sending the Li Ghee. We shall all enjoy the nuts, I am sure, whether they are fresh or canned.

It was a great disappointment to me to miss your recent visit. Indeed I have been hoping to find the chance to drop in on you at your Boston headquarters, as I am very anxious to talk over with you your brother’s situation and to help you further, if I can, in solving that hard problem. Unfortunately I have been travelling about the country almost constantly during the past term and have been forced to let most of my personal affairs and interests "go by the board* for the time being. When I once get this job out of the way I shall hope very much to have you come out to Andover for a week-end and give me the opportunity thereby of renewing the old friendship.

With heartiest good wishes for the New Year, believe me

Very sincerely yours.

My dear Yung:

I have your interesting letter of May 10th. It seems to me unlikely that a position could be found for you in the Andover National Bank, as their work in foreign exchange is very limited. I would suggest, however, that you make application at some of the Boston banks, preferably the Merchants National. First National, Oil Colony Trust Co., ml the Massachusetts Trust Co. I happen to know pretty intimately some of the officers connected with these institutions and would be willing and glad to have you refer them to me in case they are interested in your application. If nothing materializes as a result of the adoption of this plan, let ms know and I will try to think of something else.

With best wishes, believe me always,

Very sincerely yours,

I am mailing you, as requested, a copy of our latest catalogue in the back of which will be found an application form. If you are thinking at all of coming to Andover in the fall, you should plan to take our entrance examinations on June 17th and 18th. Mr. P.Y.Liang
Keystone Academy
Factoryville, Pa.

My dear Mr. Liang:

I have this morning received your two letters of January 14th and January 15th and your formal application for admission to Phillips Academy. We regularly drop a few boys at the close of the fall term, a larger number indeed than is generally admitted at the opening of the winter term. This year a few boys have recently left us to take up military services, hence we have several vacancies in the school at the present time. So far as our accommodations are concerned therefore we can and will be glad to welcome you and your friends.

The question which chiefly concerns me relates to you previous school work and your chances of meeting successfully our scholarship requirements here. It is not easy to adjust a newcomer’s schedule to our own scheme of work when the adjustment has to be made in the middle of a school year. If you are willing to leave the final arrangement of the schedule in our hands, we will, of course, do the best we can for you; though we cannot promise to continue in all cases the subjects you have been studying to date. The catalogue, which I am mailing you under separate cover contains full information as to the nature and extent of our various courses of study.

If you decide to enter the school it is important that you should do so at the earliest moment. The essential requirement for admission is a satisfactory record from your last school. Re assume that all newcomers will be able to provide the customary letters of honorable dismissal and submit evidence shewing that they are leaving their previous schools for good and sufficient reasons.

We have six Chinese boys in the school this year. By a queer coincidence the last letter I opened in this morning’s mail before reaching yours was that of an old Chinese friend of mine, now living in Hong- kong, who graduated from this school some thirty-five years ago, and a man who entertained me royally several years ago when I traveled in China.

Please let me hear from you promptly in ease you decide to
change schools at this time and satisfactory arrangements can	be made, so that you may be able to start at the earliest possible date under the new conditions

 Very sincerely yours,

Dear Sir:

I have your letter of July tenth. Since the basis of your difficulties in your studies is unquestionably your limited knowledge of the English language, I wonder if you would not do as well in my brother's small school at Mont Vernon, New Hampshire, as you could possibly do anywhere else for the coming year. Such an arrangement would permit you to carry on work which would so far as possible parallel the work of our own classes here, so that if you desired to return to Andover later the way would be made easy for you.

If this plan does not appeal to you, I would suggest Dummer Academy as the next best place to fit your peculiar needs. This school is located in South Byfield, Mass., as you probably know.
I am asking the treasurer's office to see that your deposit of twenty-five dollars made on the room assignment is returned. I am also asking them to have your trunks taken care of until you decide where you wish to have them sent.

Let me know if I can help you further.

Very sincerely yours,

My dear Mr. Lee:

We are very much disappointed that your ward, Mr. Liang, has not made greater progress in his work in this school. In discussing the case recently I found that there was general agreement among the boy's instructors that he needs, for the present at least, the environment and stimulus of a smaller school where he will receive personal and intimate guidance in his studies. A year in a school of this kind would perhaps fit the boy to meet the requirements of a large school like Philipps Academy. We have frequently recommended this plan for boys in similar circumstances in the past, and generally with excellent results. In advising strongly that this course be adopted in the case of Mr. Liang we are hopeful that after a year passed in this way the boy will be able to return to Andover and complete his work here with credit.

If I can in any way aid you in finding a school of this character, I shall be only too glad to be of service.

Very sincerely yours,
