Yes, Fan’s death was a very sad affair. The boy had clearly overworked, taken no exercise, and was a good subject for disease when disease once tackled him. We had a very simple, brief memorial service for him last Saturday afternoon, and there must have been between fifty and sixty Chinese boys present, delegations from Harvard, Tech, Exeter, and Dummer. I had five of them at the house with me over night, and seven at breakfast the next morning. They were a fine lot of boys. I don’t believe that anyone is going to get panicky over Fan’s death. Those with whom I have talked seem to be very reasonable about it. Daab of High Street in New Haven a letter in which she encloses a bill amounting to $43.46 which she has carefully itemized and which she maintains you contracted with her for board last year. According to the bill you owe her for board from October 28th to December 11th. She admits having received last November from me a check for $16.40 covering board from October 12th to October 28th. She says, however, that she has not been able to get the balance. On looking up your accounts I find that board was regularly paid by me to a Mrs. Shea covering the period which Mrs. Daab specifies on her bill. When Mr. Sawyer turned over the account to me in October of that year, there was a deficit of $118.01 against you. This appears at the end of the account as I have made it up. You will note that according to the figures there was a balance on hand of $514.28 at the opening of the new year. This is due to the fact that I borrowed $700. in November, which is included in the general account. Consequently you are really behind to the extent of about $170. I imagine that this must be a hard year for your father, as it is for nearly everybody else in money lines, and hence I hope you will do all you can to keep expenses at the lowest limit. Not that I am complaining. On the whole I think you have done remarkably well.
