Only yesterday I received a letter from your father in which he again requested that I would "attempt once more to persuade my boy to perform his duties and to realise his own responsibilities about his future." A vacation such as you have planned and involving an expense of over $150.00 is not only uncalled for but certainly not in accord with the expressed wishes of your father. Under the circumstances I can't send you the money for the same, for to do so would be clearly to violate the confidence your father has reposed in me in this matter. Further, I am not at all happy to know that you are in New York, where there are so many distractions and temptations and where unfortunately many of your own countrymen, who are supposed to be in this country for high and serious purposes, have earned a reputation by their conduct and standards that is anything but creditable to them and to their country. There are many of the other kind there, too, of course, but I have heard the best of my Chinese friends, who know the conditions intimately, say again and again that New York is a dangerous place for the average Chinese boy to be.
