My dear Tu:

I have just received your letter of December 20 and note that you are in New York City on your nay to Michigan. Why you should go to New York to reach Michigan, I don't at all understand. Further I am sure that your father would not approve of the long journey and expense involved in making the Michigan trip. If your cousin needs to see you, he can make the trip to you as readily as you can sake the trip to him.

Only yesterday I received a letter from your father in which he again requested that I would "attempt once more to persuade my boy to perform his duties and to realise his own responsibilities about his future." A vacation such as you have planned and involving an expense of over $150.00 is not only uncalled for but certainly not in accord with the expressed wishes of your father. Under the circumstances I can't send you the money for the same, for to do so would be clearly to violate the confidence your father has reposed in me in this matter.

Further, I am not at all happy to know that you are in New York, where there are so many distractions and temptations and where unfortunately many of your own countrymen, who are supposed to be in this country for high and serious purposes, have earned a reputation by their conduct and standards that is anything but creditable to them and to their country. There are many of the other kind there, too, of course, but I have heard the best of my Chinese friends, who know the conditions intimately, say again and again that New York is a dangerous place for the average Chinese boy to be. I am sorry that you did not early discuss your plans with me, for I am not willing to endorse plans made in advance and without any knowledge, especially when they involve heavy and wholly unreasonable expense.

Very sincerely yours

My dear Tu:

Thank you for your prompt reply to my recent letter of inquiry. The marks are not so bad, though I wish the Business Practice and Accounting, which I should judge are the really important parts of your schedule, could be lifted from a merely passing grade. Your father is eager to make a good business man out of you, and you must make the most of this training opportunity, which is probably the last one you will get before you have to plunge into practical business life for yourself.

By the way, won’t you have a copy of the catalogue of your school, if they issue one, sent me so that I can follow a bit more closely the character and substance of your work?

Thank you for your friendly remembrance at Christmas time. It was good to see your name on a cheery card.

A happy and successful New Year to you.

Faithfully yours.

My dear Tu:

I have your letter of December 5 and am sending you a check for $30.00 as requested. This, I hope, will cover your vacation expenses I also hope that we shall hear soon from your father in order that your account may not be too heavily overdrawn.

Dr. MacDaniel sent me today a bill of $21.00 from a Dr. Kober, and I have returned it, asking him to secure your O.K. before it is paid by me. This seems to be pretty heavy charge, and I am wondering whether your physical condition is such that you are compelled to face heavy expenses of this kind. If so, I am disposed to question the general value to you of the school connection out there, for it can’t mean that you are in the best of health.

With best wishes for the holiday season, believe me.

Faithfully yours.

My dear Tu:

Here is the check for $25, as requested, $10. for incidentals and $15, to cover the trip to Syracuse, if you decide to take it. Please return the receipt promptly.

I think I have already sent you a detailed statement of, your account up to November 28th. The books show that at that time you had overdrawn your account by $354.86. Your additional expenditures since November 28th have amounted to $487.90* making a total of $842.76. In the meantime a check was resolved from your father on December 22nd amounting to $600. That means that at the present time you are $242.76 in arrears. You can understand, therefore, why I am so eager that you should keep your expenditures within bounds. If your father cares to send me more money for you to spend, I am perfectly willing that you should spend it. Since he evidently does not wish to do so, I am equally clear that I have no right to borrow ahead for you, as I have been compelled to do almost from the date of your arrival.

Faithfully yours,

My dear Tu:

I have just received a letter from your uncle, Mr.F.S.Tu, with the request that I should convey to you this message: “That time once gone will never return, the time for studying, that is in the time of youth, is very short, in comparison with the length of time in manhood, so there is ample time for pleasure, when education and knowledge have been acquired during the days of youth, thereby there will remain nothing to regret in the long days to come.”

Your uncle adds that your father has been mush disappointed in your failure to make greater progress in your studies and in your seeming lack of a sense of responsibility about your financial affairs. I have written your father that in this latter respect I feel that you have shown definite improvement this year, and I earnestly hope that my belief will prove fully justified by a continued improvement in this respect on your part so that I may later assure your father that you are steadily gaining in this as well as in other ways.

One other thing: I am not willing that you should stay at your present school beyond this current year. It is imperative that you should enter by that time a school of higher and more advanced standing, but to carry the harder work successfully it is equally important that you should give your very best endeavors to the work you are now called upon to do.

Very sincerely yours.

My Dear Tu:
On my return to Andover I find your letter of July 18 with accompanying receipts. Thanks for both.

I am sending you the extra case for the month, as requested, but can’t understand why $90.00 should not prove ample for your board and lodging. $90.00 per month is the full allowance which the Chinese boys at Tech have received from me and one of them, Frank Lin, has been getting along on $60.00 per month only. This has been during the college year, too, when expenses are naturally heavier than they are in summer. $50.00 a month for board is absurdly excessive, and you ought to do far better than that. I am sending the cash under protest, therefore, and with expectation that for the month of August you will find a way to keep the expenses much lower.

Yours sincerely yours

My dear Tu:

I have your letter of March first, and am enclosing check, as requested. I am also enclosing a copy of your father's recent letter to me, which will show you clearly how he feels ahout your expenses and how important it is that you should keep these expenses down to the lowest reasonable limits. Under the circumstances it is of course necessary that the bills already contracted should be paid, and if your teacher who taught you English was not paid regularly for that service, it is of course eminently proper that you should give her a suitable present. If she was regularly paid for the task, however, as a member of the faculty or as a private tutor, such a present would be only superfluous.

With all good wishes, believe me,
Ever sincerely yours.

                <text>My dear Tu:

I wrote you a long letter yesterday, addressed to Lima, explaining why I had been forced to delay in sending you your check and calling attention to the fact that I have tried to impress upon you and the other Chinese boys that early notice should be given of your desires if you expect prompt remittances when they are required. I am frequently out of town and in this particular case had been away for almost all of a ten day period at the time your request arrived. Consequently I could not send the money until it was a bit too late for your purposes.

In view of the fact that I sent you $50. 00 instead of the $95.00 asked for, I am both surprised and distressed that you should have made the long and expensive trip to Arm Arbor. As I explained in my letter yesterday, from January,1925, to January, 1926, your accounts show that you spent between $2900.00 and $3000.00, a tremendously excessive amount, and in view of your father’s recent and explicit instructions to me urging retrenchment, I felt and so wrote you that you simply could not afford to take a trip covering a week or ten days, only, and involving the enormous expense of practically $100.00. Under the circumstances I don’t feel that I have any right to send you the additional check at this time, for I don’t feel that you are carrying out either your father’s wishes or my own.

Very sincerely yours </text>
