My dear Mr. Vreeland:

I am indeed distressed by the contents of your letter, and hardly know what to say, I cannot believe there is any reasonable excuse for Tommy Lee’s delinquencies, for he stood far higher here than did many of the boys who are having no trouble in meeting the Sheffield requirements. I shall do my best to get hold of the boy during the vacation, and see if I can get at the bottom of the trouble. In the meantime, anything you can do at that end will be deeply appreciated I assure you. Lee is in a sense a personal charge of mine while he is in the country, and I am genuinely and deeply concerned about him.

Faithfully yours,</text>

My dear Mr. Wells:

I can’t begin to tell you how thoroughly I appreciate the care you you have taken in following up the case of my Chinese ward and the helpful attention you have given to his peculiar needs. This latest report of yours is certainly the most satisfactory that has come to me for several years, and I am taking the liberty of passing it on to the boy’s father, who I am sure will be pleased to receive it.

I can only hope, though I dare not predict, that Tu’s recent spurt will develop something savoring of permanency.

Again thanking you for your deeply appreciated cooperation,

My dear Mr. Tu:

Your most interesting letter of March 16th has just reached me and I hasten to thank you for it and to express my appreciation of the friendly and generous sentiments it contains. May I also use this opportunity to thank you again and most heartily for the unique and highly prized present you were so thoughtful as to send me through your boy. The God of happiness which is now sheltered by my roof, ought to inspire cheerful sentiments in everyone who gazes on his smiling countenance. Certainly I shall always prize and value the gift most highly, both for its own intrinsic worth and for the friendly thought that started it on its long Journey to its new home.

Your check for $600 was duly received and acknowledged, at the time. Doubtless the acknowledgment has reached you before this. Unfortunately it was necessary to cover a considerable overdraft with the amount but 1 am urging your hoy to exercise every care to avoid unnecessary expenditures to make the balance last as long as possible. He wished to make a loan to a fellow student now in Boston but 1 explained to him that in view of the small balance remaining in his favor it was not fair to do this and that he must explain to his friend just why. He is naturally so generous that he seems likely to need curbing in matters of this kind rather than in the matter of personal and selfish extravagance.

With renewed assurance of my appreciation of your generous thought of me, and with kindest regards, believe me

Sincerely and gratefully yours.

My dear Mr. Tu

I have your interesting letter of March 17 with the accompanying copy of your letter of the same date to your boy. Both have been read with keen and deep interest.

I have tried to keep in as close touch as possible with Kong, even though he is not home in school, and he has been very responsive in telling me of his work and plans and hopes. When I found how much time he was devoting to outside work by which to earn his expenses, I felt that it would be utterly impossible for the boy, to whom studies come hard at best, to take all this time from his school work and hope to make any progress at all. Under the circumstances, and in view of the suggestions in your earlier letter, I advised Kong to give up this outside work at once, to devote all of his time to his studies, and to count on me to supply from the funds which you have furnished sufficient money to meet his actual needs. It was my idea that, if the boy were to have this last chance to go ahead with his American education, he should have it free from all handicaps in order that we should be in a proper position to determine as a result of the year's work what to plan for the future.

I hope you will approve of this decision of mine and the action prompted by it. In the meantime I am, of course, urging Kong to give himself heart and soul to his studies and to do his best to prove to us that he is going to be able to make real progress and eventually attain the goal you have set him and on the basis of which his school courses are now arranged. I do hope that we may be able to report real progress.

So far as I can judge, Kong has not been disposed to make friends with boys who are not actuated by high purposes. I have constantly warned him of this very point, and, from what he tells me of the friends with whom he is most intimately thrown in contact, I am led to believe that they are boys of good character and serious purpose.

With kindest personal regards and the earnest hope that I may be able to do of some real and further assistance to you and to your boy, believe me

Very sincerely yours

My dear Mr.Tu:

I write to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of November 23, enclosing check for $600.00, which, as requested, has been deposited to the account of your son. As the boy had already overdrawn his account by several hundred dollars, the receipt of your cheek was doubly welcome.

I have constantly urged upon your boy the necessity of keeping his expenses within proper limits, but apparently without the greatest success. I cannot find that he is indulging in any undue extravagances in themselves, but his vacation expenses, for example, are bound to be high if he travels to New York or Chicago to visit his friends, as he appears to feel that it is necessary for him to do. In my last letter to him, I told him that I had no objection whatever to such trips, provided you showed your approval of then by remitting sufficient funds to cover them, but that, in view of the fact that you had not done so, I felt equally clear that it was my duty to urge him to give up the trips in question and live gristly and cheaply during the vacation period. I do not quite know what to do in the matter and shall, therefore, welcome your frank advice. In order that you may understand my position, fully, I am enclosing a copy of the letter referred to. If my position is not in every way sound, please be perfectly frank to tell me so for I am serious only to carry out your own wishes and to help you realise your personal ambitions for the boy.

I am also enclosing a copy of his expense account up to December 1st, so that you may see just how the situation stands and the extent and character of expenditures to date.
Wishing you a truly happy and prosperous new year and with kindest personal regards, believe me

Very sincerely yours.

My dear Mr. Tu:

I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of November 5, enclosing check for six hundred dollars ($600.00), the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged. The check has been deposited to your boy’s account as requested.

It is very difficult for me to know just how your boy is getting along or how he is investing his time in view of his present location in Boston. When he was here, I could follow his work and ways pretty closely. Since he left, it is difficult to do so, though I have every reason to believe from his letters that he is doing his best to make progress in his studies and to live a straightforward and proper life. I have serious doubts, however, whether he will make sufficient progress in his school work to justify the expense and sacrifice which you are making to keep him in this country. This I have already intimated to you before, so I am mentioning no new opinion. In my judgement the boy made too late a start in his education in this country to secure very satisfactory results.

I am writing to the principal of the school where he now is and am asking him to send me as full a report as he is able, and shall be glad to transmit the same to you on its receipt.

With kindest personal regards, believe me always,

Very sincerely yours.

My dear Mr.Tu:

Your letter of June 19, the receipt of which has been acknowledged, by my secretary, is before me and I thank you for it. As my secretary has already advised yon, the check for $600.00 has been deposited to the credit of your boy and will be used in his behalf as carefully and wisely as things permit.
Kong has faced a rather serious handicap this spring through illness, from which, however, he seems to be fully recovered at this time. He had the best of hospital care, but naturally this involved some extra expense, and expense which I am sure was more than justified under the circumstances.

Very sincerely yours

My dear Mr. Tu:

I acknowledge the receipt of your letter of May 1, enclosing a check for six hundred dollars ($600.00), which I am depositing to the account of your boy as requested. I am writing your son by this same mail, advising him of your wishes, and telling him the it is evidently your desire that he should secure a regular job and earn his own way from now on if he is to remain in this country. I have sent him the customary allowance of one hundred dollars for June. In the meantime, I will hold the balance, together with a balance still remaining from your earlier remittances, until the boy decides on his future plans. If he does decide to return to China, I will see that he is allowed ample funds to meet the expenses involved in the trip. He is already seeking a position with Ford concerns and I hope may be successful. I shall be glad to help him all I can, though I am afraid that I have no special influence in that particular direction.

Assuring you again of my readiness to continue to aid you and your boy in every way in my power, and with best wishes for the days ahead, believe me

Very sincerely yours,
