Mr. Tsai Shou Kie
35 Race Course Road
Tientsin, China.

My dear Mr. Tsai:

Your friendly and welcome letter of August 24th has just reached me, and I am depositing check for $1,600 enclosed to Kuo Fang's account for his school and other expenses. I have not yet settled some of his doctor's and infirmary bills brought ever from last term and due to his various illnesses last year nor the expenses of his summer camp. Those are fairly heavy items, but I feel sure that the balance will carry the boy some distance into the current school year. Try as I may, it seems next to impossible to keep Kuo Fang’s expenses down to the limit of those reached by the other Chinese boys under my cars. The extra expenses occasional by his several illnesses last year could not, of course, be avoided. The boy himself, however, has a way of always exceeding a little the amount which I believe he ought to spend; and it is because of this tendency that I have been very much worried, about him and have been led to wonder whether he was profiting to the extent he should profit by the American education and the American connection.

The boy is a most attractive and likeable fellow, and I hate to believe that he is going to disappoint you or me in his conduct or later career. His attitude towards me has always been one of unbounded courtesy and friendliness; but the bills come in despite that fact and do not seem to grow less in size in spite of my constant admonitions. His school work, too, has not been of so high an order as to inspire confidence, while his well-known social proclivities and his general popularity among his mates prompt at times a bit of apprehension on my part. I have told Kuo Fang that he should watch his record with school with more than usual interest and care this year in the hope that I should have reason to feel confidence for the future when the complete record should have been considered at the end of the year, but with some misgivings as to the recommendation I would deem advisable to make to you on the basis of the data before me. I am only interested, of course, to assure myself that the boy is accomplishing by the American connection what you desire and attaining those objects in the development of character and broadening of mind for which you are making such genuine sacrifices. I hope that such apprehensions as I have had in the past may be wholly dispelled before the year is out and that I may be able to report more confidently my expectations for the future.

Please remember me warmly to Kuo Pao and Kuo Tsao and tell the former that I am sorry that the girl is not boy, so that we could look forward to continuance of the family connection at Andover for years to come. What an Andover colony you have in your home! And how I should love to drop in and have a jolly old-fashioned meeting with them all once more. Your report of Tommy Lee is especially interesting; for I very much feared during the last year of Tommy’s stay in America that he had become so Americanized in some of the superficial ways that he would find it very difficult to adjust himself to the home conditions when he returned. We have had few boys here in recent years who were more universally like or who justly earned more popularity among their mates. These very qualities, however, made some of us a bit apprehensive as to the final effect and outcome. I rejoice to know your letter that the boy is apparently doing so well and has won the confidence of you and his many other friends. Give him my kindest regards, please, and heartiest good wishes for the days ahead.

Again assuring you of my personal regard and esteem, believe me always

Very sincerely yours,

August 24, 1922.

Dear Dr. Stearns:

I enclose herewith Draft, payable to your order and drawn on the International Banking Corporation, for the sum of Sixteen Hundred ($1600.00) Gold Dollars, and shall be glad to have the amount credited to Kuo Fang’s account for his school and other expenses.

He has been writing home very frequently, and I am quite satisfied with the progress he is making in his studies in view of the after-effects of his operation for appendicitis. In all his letters, he never fails to mention of the paternal interest you take in him, and for which I wish to express my profound appreciation and thankfulness.

Notwithstanding the ups and downs of events which are transpiring in Peking and other centres, as you may be informed by the Press accounts, the people are going on with their daily occupations as usual. I am very optimistic that sooner or later we shall have a Government worthy of its name. The conditions now prevailing are comparable to those in France during the early years of the French Republic.

I believe Kuo Fang has told you that his brother Kuo-pao is the father of a baby girl, age one and one-half year. Her name is Edith, and she is such a sweet and darling child, now able to walk and beginning to learn to talk.

Besides my two sons and son-in-law, Y.S.Wong, I have living with me another Andoverite, who,I understand during his four years under your guardianship, was a great pride to the school and to you personally. He is Tommy Y.C.Lee, and has been staying with us for nearly two years. He has grown not in height but in dimension, being as tall as he is broad. He joins with the others and myself in sending our fondest remembrance and kind regards to you.

Very sincerely yours,</text>

Mr.S.K.Tsai,
Tientsin, China.

Dear Mr. Tsai:

It is with deepest regret that I am obliged to write you the decision of the faculty requesting Kuo Fong to withdraw from school at this time. In spite of our best efforts, and I and others have constantly labored with the boy,- we have not been able to get him to measure up to the Andover standards, either in achievement or effort. In the past he has been handicapped somewhat by illness, and we have made every reasonable allowance, and I am inclined to think, too great an allowance at times, for the necessary handicaps resulting. This year the boy’s health has been, on the whole, very good, but the results in his school work have been poorer than ever. It seems perfectly clear that, if he is to remain in this country for his further education, he should go to some smaller school where a closer and more exacting supervision is in vogue and where h3 can consequently be guided more closely in his work. I shall try to find such a school for him for next term, though it is my personal belief that the boy has secured from our American educational opportunities about all that he is likely to absorb with profit. Deeply as I dislike to say it, I am pretty thoroughly convinced that Kuo Fong should be called back to China at this time where his problem and needs can be studied at first hand by you and his brothers. Possibly it might be wise later to attempt again the American connection, but I doubt it.

Please understand that the boy has always been gentlemanly and courteous in his relations to me. He has been full of promises, too, but the promises have not borne much fruit. I confess that I have reached the end of my resources in dealing with him, and I feel very deeply that the boy ought to have the parental touch at this particular crisis in his life. I am sure you will appreciate that only my deep interest in the boy himself and his future prompts me to write you in this vein.

With kindest regards to yourself and the other members of your family circle, believe me always.

Very sincerely yours,

My dear Tsai:

Many thanks for your letter resolve! this morning. I am glad the vacation has turned out so well for you. Accept , too, please, my hearty thanks for the scarf which you so generously gave me at the Christmas season. I shall value it highly.

After your visit with Mr. Brown I think it would be well for you to plan to run down to Andover a day or two before school is booked to open, so that I can discuss with you the best plan to follow for the rest of the school year. Perhaps you have been giving the matter some thought yourself and may have some suggestions to offer.

Faithfully yours,

Mr. K. F. Tsai
The Stearns School
Mont Vernon, New Hampshire

My dear Tsai:

Thank you for your nice note. I am enclosing check for ten dollars, as requested. Kindly return receipt.

I do hope you will find that your work at Mont Vernon for the rest of this year will help you greatly in developing a little more momentum and in getting results. I can’t bear to think of the possibility of your losing out, though, as you know, I have been very anxious and at times much disappointed up to date.

Let me take this opportunity also to apologize sincerely for the unfortunate developments at the beginning of the term, for the story has come to me that you returned to Andover without any idea that you were to withdraw at this time, and that you did not discover the fact until you found some one else in your room. I thought I had made it clear to you before you left for your holidays that this was without much doubt to be the decision of the faculty. When I wrote you, therefore, during the middle of the holiday vacation asking you to come to Andover a day or two before school opened in order to decide on your plans for the future, I felt practically clear that you could interpret this letter in no other way than that the decision for the change had been definitely reached. If I had happened to be here at the very openings of the winter term, perhaps I could have eased the situation for you. Anyway I am sincerely sorry for what happened, and can assure you that whatever the humiliation to which you may have been subjected, it was all entirely unintentional on my part.

Very sincerely yours,
