Thank you for your good letter of June 14th. Mr. Tung has been in to see me this Morning, and has practically decided to join your camp. He now tells me that he has a friend at Columbia who wishes to come with him. Do you think you could stand two of them? I can’t vouch for the friend; but Yung is as clean and attractive a little fellow as you could ask to meet. Yung has a copy of your circular, and you will doubtless receive his application within the next for days.

My dear Brother Bennet:

I am very grateful to you for your letter of October 20. Let the good work go on. We will all be ready to offer further congratulations as you climb the ladder.

I don’t know just what to say about T. Y. Lee. He was here for two years 1920-1921 and 1921-1922. His scholarship was far from strong, though, on the whole, he did pretty well for a foreigner. His general record was all that could be desired, but I can’t recall that he made any very deep impression on the student body. What he may have done or to what extent he may have developed since that time, I am in no position to judge, for he was not one of my personal wards, as so many of our Chinese boys in the last twenty-five years have been. All I can say is that there was certainly nothing in the Andover record that could be counted against the boy and that it would be only fair, therefore, to judge him on the later record with which you are in closer contact and personally familiar.

In this connection let me say that you will make no mistake to keep your eyes on Charlie Sun, a Chinese boy in the freshman class this year. I have dealt at first hand with considerably over a hundred of these Chinese boys, and of all that group, some of whom have made very distinguished records for themselves in the higher institutions, I know of none who outranks in character and real worth this particular youngster. He lived in my own house for several years, is my personal ward still, and consequently I have had a pretty good opportunity far sizing him up. There is nothing aggressive about him, but he is one of those fellows who wins increasing respect and admiration the more one gets to know him. I shall be much surprised if some good fraternity does not grab his before he has gone far in his Amherst course, and I should naturally like to see his, if such a contact proved congenial to all concerned, in my old crowd.

Faithfully yours.

Dear Miss Hsu:
I have your letter requesting my premission for Miss Helen
Tsai to be present at your wedding on November 29.

I can readily understand how much you must desire to have
Helen with you, and I should like very much myself to allow her this privilege if I felt that it could be done without seriously interfering with her school work. The trip would mean an absence of several days, of course, and not many schools are willing to allow their regime to be broken into such an extent. I shall take the matter up with Helen’s principal, however, and let you know mere definitely later.

A second reason why I hesitate is because the journey is alone, and I don’t think that Helen, at her age and in a foreign land, should make the trip alone. If she were older and more accustomed to traveling in this country, I should perhaps feel more ready to allow her to accept a responsibility of this kind. As it is, I am afraid that her father would hardly approve of the arrangement.

Very sincerely yours

My dear Warnock

I am enclosing the application of Hing Fun Yung, the Chinese boy whom I have asked you to take into your camp for the summer. By the way, your circular says nothing about expense, so you see how trustful I am. Perhaps you plan to take boys for nothing, as a way of serving your country.

I don't know just what to say about Yung’s religious denomination, but if you are ready to take him on trust in that respect I think you will find he will prove himself much more of a Christian than some of the Yankees you have been accustomed to deal with, who make more out of the confession of their faith.
With best wishes, believe me,

Faithfully yours.

Dear Mr.Manning:

Thank you for your note about Yang. Evidently we are to have two new orientals this year, which will keep the delegation fairly even. I hope that your protégé will justify your ambitions for him and prove a good Andover boy and later a good Andover product.

Mr. Lynde can tell better than I what the prospects are for fitting him in, though if you are willing to take care of him temporarily, in case a room has not already been assigned, I see no reason why we should not at least give the lad a tryout.

Hoping to get something more than a passing glimpse of you in the near future, and assuring you that I am in the best of shape to hammer your shoulders at the next Andover-Exeter game, believe always,

Sincerely yours,

                <text>24 January, 1918
Mr. K.C.Li
4904 Woolworth Building
New York City

My dear sir:

On my return to Andover last evening, I found on my desk your letter of January 22nd, also a postal and telegram from Mr. Liang. Mr. Liang’s message advised me that he and his two friends would reach Andover on Tuesday evening, or some time Wednesday. They appeared last night; but as I was out of town at the time I was not able to see them until this morning. They have just left my office after talking over their situation with me.

From all I can gather Mr.Liang, or I think it is he, for he is the one who wrote me, seems qualified to do the work of our lowest or first-year class. The other two boys both through their lack of knowledge of the English language as well as of the subject matter required for our work are clearly unprepared for any of the work provided by our school curriculum. On the basis of my experience with many other Chinese boys in recent years who have come here under almost identical conditions I believe that there boys will process far more rapidly if they are placed for the balance of the year in some small home school where they will be compelled to talk English and can study English to the fullest extent. Possibly something in the way of a modern language or of mathematics might me attempted in this period. But the main stress should be laid on English. By rounding out the current school year in this way they ought to be able to return to us next fall with good prospects of making a success of their school work here. Some of our best students in the senior class of the current year are Chinese boys who went through exactly this same experience when they first came to the country.

The other proposition would be the one suggested by you, - namely to have the boys remain in Andover and tutor outside of the regular school regime. I think, but I cannot promise, that tutors can be found for this work. Our own men as a rule are extremely busy, and would not in consequence be able to devote as much time to the boys as they would require. What they need more than book work is to be placed under conditions where they would be forced to think and work in English from morning until night. Only in this way could they escape the natural handicaps they would face when they came to tackle other subjects later with a too-limited knowledge of the English language. I shall be glad to do what I can to provide tutors for the boys, if the latter plan in deemed by you the one to pursue. I think too that it will be possible to find satisfactory accommodations for them in the town; for under the circumstances our regularions would not permit them to reside in any of the regular school buildings. My strong conviction is that it will be better and more satisfactory in every way for the boys to enter such a school as I have mentioned above. In case you agree with me, I shall be only too glad to make recommendations which will be based on the experiences of the past.

I have asked the boys to wait here until I can hear from you further, so I trust you will find it possible to answer promptly. Under separate cover I am mailing you one of our catalogues so that you may have full information before you in regard to the school, the extent and character of its courses, expenses, accommodations, etc. Boys who enter at this time of year are charged on a pro rate bass from the date on which they enroll.

Very sincerely yours.

My dear Mr. Li:

I have your letter of January 25th. The boys are also anxious to be given a chance to try our work here at Andover; and I am disposed to accede to their request if such a plan commends itself to you AS wise. I cannot help feeling, however, that my original judgment in the matter is still correct, and that two of the boys will find our work beyond them. On the other
hand they will doubtless be better satisfied if they have made the attempt and failed than they would be if we insisted on a different type of school at just this moment. Please understand, however, that this is only a suggestion, and that I shall be governed entirely by your own wishes in the matter.

The schools I have chiefly in mind are the Dummer Academy at South Byfield, Mass., and a home school conducted by my own brother at Mont Vernon, N. H., known as the Stearns School. Dummer Academy has about fifty boys and the other school from fifteen to twenty. I believe that the boys would be well taken care of in either place; and the expenses of both are more reasonable than are those of most of the other schools known to me.

I am asking both of these institutions to send you their circulars and such other information as they may care to supply.

Very sincerely yours,

My dear Mr. Lee:

We are very much disappointed that your ward, Mr. Liang, has not made greater progress in his work in this school. In discussing the case recently I found that there was general agreement among the boy's instructors that he needs, for the present at least, the environment and stimulus of a smaller school where he will receive personal and intimate guidance in his studies. A year in a school of this kind would perhaps fit the boy to meet the requirements of a large school like Philipps Academy. We have frequently recommended this plan for boys in similar circumstances in the past, and generally with excellent results. In advising strongly that this course be adopted in the case of Mr. Liang we are hopeful that after a year passed in this way the boy will be able to return to Andover and complete his work here with credit.

If I can in any way aid you in finding a school of this character, I shall be only too glad to be of service.

Very sincerely yours,

I very much fear that our good friend, Mr. Liang, is net going to be able to make our work. He is now pursuing his studies in our lowest class and is taking special work at that, laying chief emphasis on English in which he is still badly deficient. Even so, I believe that his instructors confirm the impression that the boy is not getting enough out of the work to justify the expense and time involved on the other hand were he to devote the balance of the current school year to perfecting his English, there is every possibility, if not probability, that he would be able to return to us in the fall and handle in a satisfactory way the regular subjects of our school curriculum.

I am writing you frankly as I am sure you wish me to do. Liang’s spirit is of the best; and we would be delighted to have him remain if he honestly felt that he was getting his money’s worth. I desire, of course, to cooperate with yon in every way in deciding what is actually best for the boy in the long run.

Very sincerely yours,
