My dear Mrs. Nye

I have your letter of February 1st.

Either Helen handed me or you sent me statements from Filene’s showing expenditures made by you in Helen’s behalf during the holidays. While the statements were made out in your name, I understood that I was to settle, and did so at the time. I enclose the receipts which seem to cover the articles listed on this latest account of yours as well as two additional ones not so listed. If I have misjudged the situation, please do not hesitate to let me know. Kindly return the receipts also, as I keep a complete file of these in the expectation of sending them later to China.

As for the dentistry, I am sure that it ought to be attended to, but I am sorry that it could not have been done sooner. I wonder if it is net delaying matters a bit too long to wait until the summer for this work. Indeed I am not sure what the children are going to do this summer, though Helen told me only yesterday that she wished to continue her regular study, a course which practically all of my Chinese ward have followed in recent years. I had thought something of seeding her to the Sea Pines Sumer School down on the Cape, but I suppose in any case there would be two or three weeks in the early and late summer when both of the children would be more or less free lances.

Very sincerely yours,

My dear Mrs.Nye:

Thank you so much for your letter of November 22 which has just reached me. Doubtless you will have received by this time the letter which I wrote you yesterday and in which I explained the plans and the reasons for the same finally adopted for the Thanksgiving recess by Helen Tsai and her brother.

I am sure that these children, for they are hardly more than than yet, will be only too glad to visit you in the not distant future, and I presume that there may be a good opportunity for this, provided your own plans permit, during the coming Christmas holidays. The plans for that period are still unsettled, though I understand that the Chinese Minister in Washington and his wife desire to have the Tsais with them for part, at least, of that time.
I am very sorry to have missed your recent call and shall hope for better luck the next time you may happen to be in this vicinity.

Very sincerely yours.

Vice-President, H.B. Wells
Burdett College

My dear Mr.Wells:

I am deeply indebted to you for the exceptionally generous and helpful way in which you have investigated and reported for me in the case of Mr. Kong. Y. Tu. The report is naturally very discouraging, but altogether too familiar in its general character.
During the past thirty years I have had to deal at first hand, in most cases acting as their American guardign, with some sixty or seventy Chinese students in this country. At the present moment I have three in my care, of whom Tu is one. With only one other or possibly two other exceptions, Tu differs completely from the main body of these students, and in just the ways that you have so clearly outlined. He has been a problem from the start, and on several occasions I urged his father to take him back to China, as it seemed to me that it was a sheer waste of time for the boy to stay here longer, pretending to study when he was getting no here, and to waste also the father's money, of which Mr.Tu, Senior, has none too much.

Last year Mr. Du Senior, for many years an admiral in the Chinese Navy, called on me in person, and I met him again a few weeks later in England. Through the interpreter whom Admiral Tu carried with him, we went into every detail of Kong's situation, and I held back nothing. The father's distress was manifest for he is a man of exceptionally fine character himself, and filled with ambitions for his son. After many discussions, it was decided to give Kong one more chance in this country, but to drop all thought of giving him any further education along cultural or purely scholastic lines and to turn him to a straight business training. That is why he was finally sent to you.

From your report, I am led to believe that we must abandon all hope of changing this boy's general make-up and points of view. He lacks ambition, he lacks stability, and I am afraid he lacks any rigid and compelling moral standards. It has been my hope all along that he would emerge from his lethargy - or worse - if we gave him time, but he is far older than he ought to be in view of his progress to date and I am pretty sure that further efforts to educate him in this country along any lines will be only wasted. In view of the special plans which you have made for the boy, however, I am ready to wait a bit before making the decision operative. Certainly this final test ought to convince us one way or the other, and it certainly offer the boy himself his chance to prove his worth. I shall deeply appreciate, therefore, any further reports which you are willing to send me, reports which I trust you will make with the same frankness and clearness with which you have made this present one.

Again let me thank you for the great care you have taken in securing for me the information desired, and believe me

Very sincerely yours.

My dear Mr. Yung:

Many thanks for your kind letter received this morning and for your thoughtfulness in sending the Li Ghee. We shall all enjoy the nuts, I am sure, whether they are fresh or canned.

It was a great disappointment to me to miss your recent visit. Indeed I have been hoping to find the chance to drop in on you at your Boston headquarters, as I am very anxious to talk over with you your brother’s situation and to help you further, if I can, in solving that hard problem. Unfortunately I have been travelling about the country almost constantly during the past term and have been forced to let most of my personal affairs and interests "go by the board* for the time being. When I once get this job out of the way I shall hope very much to have you come out to Andover for a week-end and give me the opportunity thereby of renewing the old friendship.

With heartiest good wishes for the New Year, believe me

Very sincerely yours.

Thank you for your note. I am sorry that you have not met with greater success in Boston. If you decide to go to New York let me know, and I shall be glad to give you a letter or two of introduction that may help.

My dear Yung:

I have your interesting letter of May 10th. It seems to me unlikely that a position could be found for you in the Andover National Bank, as their work in foreign exchange is very limited. I would suggest, however, that you make application at some of the Boston banks, preferably the Merchants National. First National, Oil Colony Trust Co., ml the Massachusetts Trust Co. I happen to know pretty intimately some of the officers connected with these institutions and would be willing and glad to have you refer them to me in case they are interested in your application. If nothing materializes as a result of the adoption of this plan, let ms know and I will try to think of something else.

With best wishes, believe me always,

Very sincerely yours,

My dear Yung:

Please excuse me for not answering your letter more promptly; but I have been away from Andover a great deal during the last two weeks, and my mail has suffered in consequence.

I can’t tell you how sorry I am for you and your brother, too, in this emergency which has arisen. I wrote to the superintendent of the McLean Hospital recently, asking him to give me a frank and full statement of his opinion regarding the case. He tells me that it will be a number of weeks before anything very definite can be determined, as the doctors must watch the boy and note his development and such changes as may take place from day to day. I know that he will have the best of care, and I have asked the superintendent to make as much of a personal matter out of the case as he can, as a favor to me. You cannot help worrying, of course, but I hope you will realise that everything possible is being done for the boy and that if a cure can be effected, it will be done.

With kindest regards and every good wish to you, believe me always

Most sincerely yours,

My dear Hr. Tu;

I am very grateful for your letter of July 15, and for the copy of your letter to your boy. The sentiment you have express in the letter meets my full approval. I can only hope that your boy will take to heart and profit by it, such sane and wholesome advice.
It is difficult for me to say just what further preparations your son will require to enable him to take up the definite study of dentistry. The Harvard Dental School, probably the best in the country, now requires a college degree from the students who enter it. This would mean, of course, a much longer period of preparation, and I doubt whether you would wish your boy to consider it. There are excellent dental schools which require much less for admission, but just how much I do not know, for it is unusual for our boys to enter that profession, at least, until they have secured their college degrees. On my return to Andover next month, I shall look into the matter and may be able to advise you more fully.

In the meantime, your boy is to take up work with us at Phillips Academy this fall and I shall be, therefore, much better able to learn at first hand of his abilities and possibilities for the future. He has needed a pretty thorough grounding in more elementary subjects than we teach at Phillips Academy. That is why I have been willing to allow him to take the work elsewhere up to this time. I am still a bit doubtful as to his ability to carry the higher work that will be required of him at Andover, but we will give him a chance and reserve final judgment until later. I cannot feel that he has made the best use of his time to date, and have told him that it seemed to me that he ought to be progressing more rapidly. This last year I have come to feel that he has developed more ambitions and has worked harder. If this impression is correct his progress from now on ought to be much more marked.

I can assure you that I shall do every thing in my power to urge him to make the best possible out of the opportunity you have given him, and which comes only once in a boys lifetime.
With kindest personal regards, believe me.

Very sincerely yours,

My dear Mr. Sampson

Thank you for your last letter, that of June 12, relating to Kong Y. Tu.

I note that Tu’s record this time is a bit better than any he has previously turned in, but even so I agree heartily with you that the boy is not college material. He is altogether too old and evidently he lacks the natural ability to handle college work successfully.

Mr. Tu’s father wrote me a short time ago that he was unwilling to advance further funds for his boy’s education in America. I reported this to Kong, who accepted the verdict rather sulkily as I had anticipated. Kong assured me that he was then trying to secure admission to the Ford school in Detroit, whatever that may be. Later, and only a week or two ago, I received another letter from the father saying that he would be willing to have Kong remain in this country if he could secure work in a Ford factory, and only on that condition. This information also I have passed on to the boy who tells me that he is trying to secure such a position, but that his efforts thus far have not met with success.

This is where matters stand at the moment, but I am perfectly clear that Tu should not go on with his work with you or in any similar school. Indeed, I must carry out the father’s instructions in this respect. Just what success the boy will have in finding work of the character he desires, I am not at all sure.

Very sincerely yours.
