Believes there are too many attending this year, allowing them to forgo English studies and communicate entirely in Chinese. Mr. Joseph Thebaud

My dear Sir:-

I have read with interest your letter of the 17th inst. received yesterday. I shall be glad to offer you such advice and help as I can, though I question how far my opinions may prove of value to you.

For the past three or four years we have had from six to ten Chinese students here each year. Consequently I have become somewhat familiar with their ways and their behavior under our American school conditions. Some of these boys have done exceptionally well. Almost without exception they have proved themselves unusually courteous and gentlemanly in their relations with us, and in the main have studied faithfully. I have noted, however, a growing tendency to extravagances, especially in the matter of clothes, and this tendency has disturbed me a good deal. I am inclined to think, too, that this year at least there have been too many of these boys here for their own good. They have found it too easy to get together and make use of their own language to the detriment of their English, and on the whole they seem to have been not quite so earnest and studious this year. I should not like to increase the size of the delegation now in Andover, and hence I do not feel justified in recommending this school for your friends just now.

I know the recent Chinese minister, whom I know intimately, and who was himself formerly a student in this school, felt very strongly that it was unwise to get too many of these boys together in one place.

[sentences illegible]

Trusting that you will feel free to advise me if I can be of farther service to you in this matter, believe me.

Very truly yours,

My dear Chan:-

It was a real pleasure to receive your letter this morning, and to learn of your continued interest in and loyalty to the school. We miss greatly the boys who went from us last year, and though newcomers are always welcome and always bring with them a large number who prove attractive, the old places and faces can never be fully replaced. In view of the fine record which you Chinese boys have made here and the uniform courtesy and good manners you have always displayed, it is not strange that I, as well as others, am interested in you. I hope we may always have a good delegation of Chinese in the school.

I am sending Mr. Thebaud a catalogue, as requested, and am writing him expressing my willingness to send him any further or more detailed information he may desire. Thanking you for the interest you have taken in the same, and wishing you all [illegible] and happiness in the days before you, believe me, with kind regards.

Very truly yours,

My Dear Lo:

Your letter with enclosures reached me just after my return to Andover from my vacation. I have looked up the correspondence and your office record and am somewhat at a loss to know just how to handle your case. I am anxious to do you full justice and to aid you to every way in gaining admission to Cornell, at the same time, our rules prohibit me from granting admission certificates to you since you are not a graduate. I have, however, signed your recommendation of moral character and am returning it with the Technology report herewith. I am also enclosing you a copy of your complete record with us, which you may use in any way you deem fit. If any obstacles still remain in the way of your admission to Cornell, please ask the Registrar to state to me just what is desired and if I can in any way make exceptions in view of the fact that you are a foreigner, I shall be only too glad to do so.

Trusting that you are having the best kind of a summer and with every good wish for the year ahead, believe me,

Sincerely yours,

I have just heard from Miss Hincliffe and enclose contract for the room occupied by Mr. Dong last year. This is the one you said you preferred. I am glad to hear you are going to this house for I am sure you ill like it and will find it a good place to study. The contract should be returned to Miss Hinchcliffe.

Trusting that you are having an enjoyable and profitable summer, believe me, with best wishes,

Very sincerely yours,

I have not yet been able to make a definite selection of room for you, though I shall do so this week. The selection in a way depends upon what the other Chinese boys are to do and hence it has been necessary to delay the final decision. I will advise you as soon as the assignment is made.

                <text>Miss Alice M. Duren
Oakland, Cal.

My dear Miss Duren:

I thank you for your letter of the 10th inst. relating to Mr. Lo. I am taking the liberty of forwarding this letter to my brother at Mt.Vernon, in order that he may fully appreciate the boy’s situation and peculiar needs. I am going to suggest to my brother that he brings the boy down here from time to time during the spring term, in order that he may make the acquaintance of the seven Chinese boys now in the school. I think such a course would help him to overcome his homesickness and loneliness.

So far as my experience goes, there is no other school outside of Andover, with the possible exception of Phillips Exeter at Exeter, New Hampshire, which offers a boy of limited means so good an opportunity to secure an education at a minimum cost. Our Trustees last year passed a special vote throwing open our scholarship funds to Chinese students on the same basis that they are open to boys of our own nationality. There is no reason, therefore, why a Chinese boyy should not be able, as so many other boys have been, to make him XX through the school at a very slight expense. I am sorry that Mr. Lo’s friend, Mr.Li, did not decide to combine forces. Of the Chinese boys now in the school two bear the name of Li, one coming from Ningpo and the other Tientsin. Both are exceedingly bright and reliable fellows.

Trusting that you will feel free to write me at any time making such suggestions as may seem to be desirable to further Mr. Lo’s best interests, believe me

Very sincerely yours,
Alfred E. Stearns</text>
