My dear Mr.Macfarland,

I do not quite know how to account for the reports which Mr.Ungvary has sent you of his situation. The boy is in some ways peculiar. So far as reports have reached me, he has always been faithful and earnest in his work and has done well in his various subjects. Along that line he seems well worth helping. In some either ways, however, he has been harder to understand.

Some of our poorest boys here are accustomed to put up with pretty rugged accommodations. Ungvary from the start objected to such surroundings on the ground that his health required something better. This may be perfectly true and I don’t want to be unfair to him. At the same time on several occasions I have thought I noticed a little tendency to spend a little more money and secure something a little better than a good many of our working boys required. Doubtless the boy’s health and temperament may make this necessary.

Please don’t misunderstand me for, barring the traits referred to, the boy seems in every way most worthy. But I would regret deeply to have him develop a lack of appreciation of what is being done for him and a willingness to accept freely all charities offered without doing his part to make ends meet. Early in the term I secured him an excellent opportunity to earn a most desirable room. He threw up the job within a few days on the ground that the ladies in charge of the house were too fussy and exacting. I know they were particularly but I know that every year boys have rejoiced to get the particular opportunity afforded in this house and that the moment Ungvary gave up the position, another good fellow stepped immediately and enthusiastically into the breach. This is one of the things that has made me a little nervous about the boy. In a word, it does not seem to me that he has yet done his best to help himself. If he has been laid off at the dining hall, it is because he was less efficient than the others. I hope, however, that this lay off may be only temporary.

Assuring you of my deep appreciation of your many kindnesses to this boy and trusting that what I have written may aid you in passing judgement on his case, believe me,

Very sincerely yours,

Alfred E. Stearns.

My dear Mr. Ungvary,

Your letter of the 29th inst. received. Our school year opens on September 18th in the morning. Most of the boys will report here at least a day before.

The room assigned you is supplied only with a rough bedstead, table and chairs. It will be well for you to bring such articles as you already have.

Mr. Anderson is still undecided about entering, but I am hopeful that he will decide to join us this fall.

Sincerely yours
Alfred E Stearns.
Principal

As I am obliged to leave town on an early train I am asking my secretary to sign this letter for me.

My dear Mr.Ungvary:

Thank you for your letter of recent date. I do feel disposed to consider your case favorably and I believe I am making no mistake in encouraging you to seek admission to the Academy this coming month. I have made a provisional assignment of a room for you and beg to inclose contract for the same herewith. This should be signed and returned to me at your early convenience. I shall be glad to admit you on a scholarship basis. Ordinarily we require of scholarship boys a payment at the outset of $50. This I am willing to waive in part in your cases, allowing you to pay it as you are able during the year, and releasing you from a substantial part of it at least in case your work and general record prove satisfactory with the school authorities.

Kindly advise me if the arrangements are not clear to you, and believe me, with kind regards,

Very sincerely yours,
Alfred E. Stearns,
Principal

My dear Mr. Ungvary:

I have your letter of the 28th ult. Perhaps it will be well for the sake of future reference to have on file from you a regular scholarship application blank, and I am enclosing one herewith.

You are right in inferring that we shall be lenient with you so far as entrance examinations requirements are concerned. I do not think you need to worry about these, though it will be good practice for you to take them. The Italian now here, to whom you refer, had only just come to this country, and was wholly unfamiliar with the work and methods of American schools. This distinguishes his case from yours, but I am convinced by the nature of your earlier reports that the entrance requirements here will cause you little difficulty.

I am glad to hear that your friend, Mr. Wu, will probably enter the Academy with you. I hope you will both come to feel the interest in and loyalty to the place that most of our boys are accustomed to feel.

Very sincerely yours.
Principal

My dear Mr.Ungvary:

I have just received your letter of the 20th inst. I am certainly glad that you are located in so good a school as Mount Herman. Your work there will, I know, be of the greatest value, while the influence of the school are, as everybody recognizes, of the best. I do not wish ever to encourage a boy to leave a good school where he is making satisfactory progress. At the same time if you still feel at the end of the year that you wish to enter Andover, we shall be glad to have you and shall merely require a satisfactory letter form Mount Herman. I assume that you will have a difficulty in securing such a letter. Your assignment to classes here would be based in on entrance examinations and the record of your previous work. There is no reason why you should not be eligible for a scholarship here unless something should occur between now and the opening of our next school year to debar you. Such a contingency is of course act likely to occur, for I know you are in school with a serious purpose I have no doubt, too, that we shall be able to put you in touch with outside work which will prove remunerative to you.

I am interested also to hear of your young Chinese friend. We have seven Chinese boys in the school at this time and they are remarkably bright set of fellows. The present Chinese Minister to this country, also an XX Andover man. If your friend wishes to enter here next year, I shall be very glad to consider his application for school and aid and I XX applying as early as this he can count on outside work to help defray his expenses. I enclose a scholarship application, which I would be glad to have him fill out carefully and return to me if he is at all likely to desire to enter here next fall. Should he decide not to do so, the fact that he has filled out and sent in this blank will not affect the situation one way on the other.

Wishing you every success and happiness in your work at Mount Herman, believe me,

Sincerely yours.

                <text>Rev. Charles F. Macfarland,
South Norwalk, Conn

Dear Sir:-

I have your letter of the 18th inst. I am very much interested in your Hungarian friend. We have a good many nationalities presented here already. One of the most interesting and promising boys we have is a young Italian who under circumstances very similar to those existing in the present instance was sent here by Dr Huntington of New York. This boy, too, is preparing for the ministry, and we believe that he will make good.

I mention these cases simply that you may understand that while we are accustomed to hold pretty rigidly to our regular courses, we are at the same time willing to make necessary allowances and exceptions for foreigners. Consequently I think we can do as much for your friend. From the catalogue which I am sending you under separate cover you will be able to see what our general courses are. As most of our boys go to Yale, these courses are arranged to meet in full the Yale requirements. I see no reason why such a course cannot be satisfactorily arranged
I do not understand from your letter whether it is your wish to have the boy enter here this year, or whether you wish him to wait until the opening of the next school year. If you will advise me on this point I shall be glad to offer were satisfactory suggestions You will be able to tell from the catalogue the amount of ground covered by our classes term by term as well as during the entire year. May I also suggest that you have your friend fill out carefully and return to me the application blank which will be found in the back of the catalogue The information called for on this blank will make it possible for me to handle the case more intelligently. Please feel free also to advise me if you desire further or more detailed information.

Very truly yours,

My dear Mr. Cook,

On the strength that you are my old friend and companion in the Boston Athletic Association, I have dropped the formality of a “Dear Sir” used in your note. Perhaps I have struck the wrong person. If so, please pardon this seeming familiarity.

As to the Chinaman, I shall be glad to see him here almost any day next week, preferably Monday or Tuesday, and in the morning. We have a number of Chinese boys now in the school, so that he won’t feel wholly among strangers. If the boy can come early in the week, that will suit me best.

Sincerely yours,
Alfred E. Stearns.
