<text>My dear Mrs. Nye:

I am somewhat at a loss to know just how best to plan for the Christmas vacation of Helen and Alfred Tsai. It is not practicable for me to care for them in my own home, and I do not at all like the idea of having then drift around here, making their headquarters at the Phillips Inn, but with no actual program to follow.

I have just inquired of Sister Mary Antony, the head of Saint Mary's School, whether the school could provide Helen during holiday season, and have learned that this is not only possible but customary each year in the cases of a few girls. Under this arrangement, Miss Antony assures me that Helen could visit New York several days to see the museums and other places of interest, under proper chaperonage, of course. On the whole, I like the idea.

Miss Antony further suggests that she is likely to come to Boston soon after Christmas for something like a week, and would be glad to bring Helen with her at that time if I care to have her do so. I am writing, therefore, to ask you with the utmost frankness, which I hope you will reciprocate, whether it would be convenient for you to have the Tsais with you for part of the Christmas holidays and whether, indeed, you would prefer to have or not to have them at all. Please be perfectly frank, for I have no desire whatever to suggest even a plan that would not meet with your fullest approval.

I am inclined to think that the time has come when I ought to surrender in a way my form of guardianship of Hellen to one of her own sex who understands her needs and can guide her judiciously than it is possible for me to do. I can make the attempt, at least, where boys are concerned, but I must confess and frankly that the problem of girls which confront me in my guise of guardian are a bit out of my sphere. I don't think it is quite fair to Helen, either, that she should not have the direct oversight and guidance of some motherly person who can help her with her individual problems.

After thinking along the above lines for many months, I am wondering whether you would feel willing to assume this responsibility? I am sure that the arrangement would be fully approved by Mr. Tsai, Sr., and I should be ready and glad to cooperate in every possible way. I am sure that Mr. Tsai would wish to reimburse you for any expense or trouble to which you were put through the relationship. May I ask you, therefore, to be frank with me in stating whether such a plan would meet with your full approval? If it does not, I shall, of course, understand perfectly your position and will turn elsewhere for possible help.

With kind personal regards, believe me

Very sincerely yours,

<text>Dear Sister Helen: I have just received your letter of December 15 and am hurrying off this note and check to you by the afternoon mail. You ought to receive them, therefore, before Wednesday when your vacation begins.

By all means accept Mrs. Nye's invitation to spend the vacation with her in South Weymouth. I am sure this will prove the happiest arrangement for you and Alfred since there is really nothing in Andover during the holiday season to interest you and employ your time. I had suggested in a letter to Sister Mary Antony that you might spend part of the vacation, at least, at Saint Mary's, but if Mrs. Nye is willing to have you for the entire period, so much the better, provided, of course, this meets with your own wishes. Anyway you care to divide the period between Saint Mary's and the Nyes will be perfectly satisfactory to me.

Very sincerely yours,

                <text>My dear Dr. Stearns:

I am in receipt of your letter of December 5th in regard to Helen’s Christmas holidays. I shall be very glad to have her spend the time here if she could be happy in so doing. We will probably have four other children, so that she would not be alone. Whenever any children spend their vacations here we make a special point of planning something for their interest and amusement.

It will be possible to send Helen to New York for several days to visit the museums and other places of interest. I think that she would enjoy doing this.

If this plan meets with your approval I shall be only too glad to do anything that I can for Helen for she has been a very acceptable member of our household. She has been very conscientious in her work and in carrying out every school regulation. We have all enjoyed having her here.

If it seems best to you for her to spend a part of her holiday in South Weymouth I think it could be so arranged that she could have company to Boston. If she went the day school closes she would have the companionship of several other pupils on their way to different points in New England. Soon after Christmas I shall probably go to Boston for a week, possibly longer. I think a trip to Boston could be planned quite satisfactorily for Helen.

I am enclosing Helen's report, which should have gone to you sooner. I think, on the whole, that it is a very good one, considering her handicap in the point of English. Her vocabulary is not large and in both History and English she finds difficulty oftentimes in meeting the requirements. One of the teachers of English has taken Helen by herself and I am sure has been a great assistance in the general understanding of the work in English.

I allowed Helen to go with a party of girls to hear Harold Bauer, which proved a most interesting afternoon for her.

I shall welcome any suggestions that you have in connection with her work or her care.

I am enclosing the vacation notice which is sent out to the parents and guardians.

Very sincerely,

Sister Superior, C.S.M.

                <text>My dear Miss Antony:

I am very grateful to you for your prompt and most helpful reply to my recent letter of inquiry. I am glad, also, to have the report of Helen Tsai's scholarship standing to date and to find that Helen has been proving a satisfactory member of your school community.

My own feeling just now is that Helen will probably be much better off to make her headquarters with you for the Christmas holiday season, though I do not for a moment wish to ask anything unreasonable. Before I decide the question definitely, I am going to find out from Mrs. Nye in South Weymouth whether she has any plans or wishes that would tend to alter my judgment. I wish I could provide for both Helen and her brother here in Andover, but this does not seem practicable or wise. I imagine, though, that she and her brother both will wish to have a part of their vacation together, and in that case, South Weymouth would be the natural meeting point. If, as you have suggested, you are planning to visit Boston after Christmas, I should judge that the South Weymouth visit could most satisfactorily be planned for that period.

Again thanking you most sincerely for the help you have given me, and trusting that I may be able to advise you a bit more definitely within the next few days, believe me.

Very sincerely yours,

Dean Thomas C. Esty,
Amherst College, Amherst, Mass.

Dear Tommy:

May I have a word with you, and then a word from you in regard to one Kuo Fang Tsai, one of our Chinese boys who hopes to enter Amherst in the fall? The situation is this.

Tsai passed for Harvard last fall, and after some pretty stiff summer tutoring, Elementary Algebra , two years of French, and two years of German. He was with us early this year but dropped out, chiefly because his health made it impossible for him to keep up with the work. He finished out the year up at Mt. Vernon with my brother and, according to his statement, is entitled to College Entrance Certificate from that school in three years of English and third year French. This will give him a good start towards admission.

Will the boy be allowed to substitute Chinese for Latin, something that has been done by many Institutions and for many of these easterners in times past? According to Tsai I believe you have done it at Amherst for some of them. If this can be done the boy will have left, as I understand it, only History and one Mathematics or Physics to make up to gain full admission. I think he will cover these during the summer as he has had Mathematics, at least, and I think some History.

The boy is my personal ward while here in America, as his two brothers were before him, and I am very anxious to advise him wisely as to the plan he should adopt for the summer. He tutored at Long Lake Lodge last summer and will probably go there again if he has a chance of getting into Amherst in September. I believe he ought to go to college this fall if he can possibly do so. He has pretty good ability, but has been handicapped for some years by rather poor health I believe, though, that he is outgrowing this, and a very careful examination to which I had him subjected by Dr. Pratt in Boston reveals no chronic weakness.

It should be added that Tsai is an extremely popular fellow with his mates. He was captain of our Soccer Team, and is one of only two or three of the many Chinese boys who have been here to be taken into a local Society.

Awaiting your reply, which I hope can be counted on in the near future, and, with best wishes to all the Esty family for a restful and happy summer, believe me ever,

Faithfully yours,
