<text>Dear Helen:

Thank you for your letter of October 7.

It is my understanding that the authorities at Saint Mary's School do not encourage too much correspondence on the part of their students. Under the circumstances, therefore, I have not felt that it would be wise to write too often unless there was something special to write about.

Two matters might be mentioned, however. First, it is true that Alfred seems to be studying quite hard and to be doing even a little better in his work than I had dared anticipate. I am letting him stay with Mrs. Erving for the present in order that he may not be interrupted in his work, though it is my plan to transfer him a bit later to one of the buildings where he will be in closer touch with his classmates.

Second, is it in keeping with the wishes of the school authorities for us to send you each month as formerly the ten dollars allowance? I am not quite sure whether such a plan is acceptable to the school, some schools preferring to take care of these allowances themselves and render bills for the same. Naturally, I wish to conform to the requirements.

With all good wishes, believe me

Very sincerely yours, </text>

                <text>My dear Dr. Stearns:

I am enclosing a copy of the schedule which has been arranged for Helen Tsai. She seems to have entered upon the work with good spirit and is most faithful and conscientious and has made herself an acceptable pupil in all her classes. She is hampered in some instances by a limited English vocabulary but she is quite ready to make her contribution to the class recitations.

In speaking of music Helen said that she had studied it for two years and felt that she had made no progress and wished to omit it.

Her uniforms were ordered and as soon as the bill is received I will forward it to you with itemized account.

You will notice from the slip enclosed that the girls are allowed a certain amount of spending money. That allowed for the girls of Helen’s class is six dollars a month. Will you kindly let me know your wish in this respect. If you wish her to have the regular amount I can either advance it to her and put it on the bill of you may send it as seems best. The money is deposited in the School Bank and each pupil draws what she needs by cheque.

It was a great help to us in having Helen come a week before school began. She seems to have fitted into the school life very well indeed and quite naturally to have taken her place in all the school activities.

I shall be glad for suggestions on any point in our care of her.

Very sincerely,

Sister Superior, C.S.M.

Thank you for your letter of October 11, and for sending me a copy of Miss Tsai's schedule. I am perfectly satisfied with whatever schedule you deem best for the girl, for, as you know her father's wish is that she should secure general culture and a good broad intellectual outlook rather than prepare for any definite line of work.

I do not believe that there is much use in pressing music on these Chinese students. My trunk-room at home still holds several musical instruments, including a good violin, purchased by these youngsters in their early enthusiasm and then shelved through their utter inability to appreciate and profit by musical training.

When it comes to spending money, I should much prefer to have the allowance handled by you, and I am therefore sending you a check to cover this item in Helen's case. The regular amount, namely $6.00 a month, seems to me very sensible, and I am sure that Helen herself will be perfectly satisfied with it.

Trusting that you will not hesitate to let me know if I can at any time be of assistance to you in dealing with Helen and her problems, believe me

Very sincerely yours, </text>
