My dear Mr. Tsai:

At the request of your minister to this country, Dr. Sao-Ke Alfred Sze, I have welcomed the opportunity to act as American guardian for your two children while they are studying in this country. My experience with girls has been limited, thought I have served in this capacity during the past twenty-five years for some sixty or seventy Chinese boys. Mary Sun of Tientsin, who is my ward at the present time, is the only Chinese girl I have hitherto had the opportunity to direct. However, with Mrs.Sze’s generous help I shall be ready and glad to do what I can to aid Helen in making the most of her American experience.

Both the children came to Andover, at my request, about two weeks ago. Up to that time I knew nothing of their previous school work or what kind of work would be required for the current school year. After talking with them, I was clear that they heeded, as so many of our Chinese students have required, a year each in a small school that we term the home school style, where special stress would be laid on the English language, both spoken and written. It seemed evident that they would be wholly unable to carry the ordinary work of a large school without this foundation. Consequently, plans were made for them on this basis and I trust you will approve.

Alfred has been placed at my brother’s school in Mont Vernon, New Hampshire, a home school of some thirty or thirty-five boys where the family atmosphere that prevails will undoubtedly help make the year a happy and profitable one for him. Several of our Chinese boys have started in this same school and have then come to us for the higher work and well qualified to meet the higher tests. I feel sure that this will prove true in Alfred’s case, for he seems exceptionally eager to learn and to make the most of the opportunities you have offered him here.

Helen has been placed in another home school of about twenty-five girls, known as the Whittier School and located at Merrimac, Massachusetts, a small town about fifteen miles from Andover. The atmosphere of this school is particularly wholesome, Mrs. Russell, the principal, being one of the old-fashioned wholesome New England type, a woman of culture and refinement and real Christian character. She had some experience with Mary Sun last year and so is fully prepared to provide for the wants of this newcomer.

I am sorry that I could not arrange schools for the two children in the same town, but it seemed out of the question to do this and at the same time provide for each the special type of school needed at the moment. However, they are not far away from each other or from me, and I feel confident that we shall be able to arrange occasional meetings which will tend to dispel tendencies to loneliness. Further, I am sure that both of the children are so naturally adaptable and of such unnaturally friendly and responsive deposition that they will readily and happily fit into the new surroundings with enjoyment and profit.

I know that I shall thoroughly enjoy the privilege of guiding and helping your children during their American life. Certainly in all my experience I have never met two who were at the outset more friendly and responsive than they have shown themselves to be. They are altogether delightful and I hope most earnestly that in their careers here they may realize your highest ambitions and hopes for them; Please feel perfectly free to criticize , suggest or advise me in any way that will help me to carry out to the best advantage your wishes for them.

Very sincerely yours.

My dear Mr. Tsai:

I am enclosing herewith statements of the accounts of Alfred and Helen up to January 18. Since these accounts were made out. I have received and paid the bill covering the second payment on Alfred’s school tuition, boxxd, room, etc., as well as incidentals, amounting in all to a little over $700.00. This means that both Helen and Alfred have balances on hand at present of approximately the same mounts.

I have regularly filed receipts for expenditures made by me in behalf of my Chinese wards bat most of the parents concerned have not cared to have me send these on to them, I shall be glad to submit them to you if you so desire.

I am afraid that I have neglected to express to you my great gratitude for your Christmas gift, which reached me through Mrs. Calhoun. I can assure you that I value it highly and that the beautiful embroidery will erelong find suitable and useful service in my home. May I also thank you for the Chinese picture which Helen presented to me several days ago, when I called at her school to see how she was getting along. This is especially pleasing to me, as I have always attached high value to the best Chinese art. I found Helen exceedingly well and seemingly happy and she was as interesed as ever in her work. Mrs. Russell spoke as enthusiastically as formerly of Helen’s spirit and progress.
I am beginning to wonder about a suitable school for Helen for next year. The choice will be influenced somewhat by the question of the course to be pursued. First of all, I must know whether it is your intention for Helen to go on to college later or to take a general course that will be expected to round out her American education. Will you please advise me definitely on this point.

I assume that you would desire a school where cultural and intellectual influences combine to create the wholesome kind of an atmosphere and contacts for a girl of Helen’s age end background. Frankly, such schools are somewhat difficult to find in America today, and they are much more expensive than they used to be. Modern changes have worked their influence on schools and colleges as well as on social life in general, and I am afraid not always for the best. I have in mind, however, two or three schools which I still feel stand high and which retain in lar-e measure the best of the old traditions without losing touch with modem progress.

St. Mary’s School on the Hudson River in New York State has been constantly called to my attention by parents of my boys and even by some of my close college and school friends as being exceptionally fine. It is an Episcopal school, emphasizing outwardly the church coloring, but is broad and liberal in its ideals and possessed of an unusually strong and high grade faculty. From all I have heard of the school I am inclined to rank it among the very first. There are smaller schools that emphasize the cultural side rather than the intellectual, and there are others they make a pretty rigid business of preparing their pupils for the higher institutions. The enrollments, too, vary widely, and of course both the small and the large school have their special advantages and disadvantages.

As it becomes necessary to register early at the best schools in order to be sure of gaining admission, may I ask you to write me very frankly as to your feelings and preferences. In general, the things that I am most anxious to know are whether Helen is to go on to college, whether a small or a large school is preferred, and whether the question of price should be carefully considered. My wish, of course, is only to carry out your desires in the matter, though I realize that the changes in conditions, which have to be faced today, are perhaps not so fully understood by you as they are by those of us who are on the ground. I frequently discuss with Minister Sze in Washington matters of this kind and shall be glad to do so and secure help in this instance if you so,desire.

With kindest personal regards, believe me
Very sincerely yours.

My dear Mr. Tsai:

Your most interesting and welcome letter of November 8 has been duly received and the check for $2,000.00 enclosed has been credited to the accounts sf the children, one half to each. Early in September Dr. Sze sent me a check for $2,000.00 which was credited in the same way, one half each to the accounts of Alfred and Helen. Dr. Sze wrote me at the time that on his return from abroad in November he would mail ms another check representing the balance left on an additional $2,000.00 which he still hold and from which some minor deductions were to be made covering the expenses of the children while they were with him in Washington. This amount I have not yet received, probably because of Dr. Sze's continued absence abroad, as I understand that he has not yet returned to this country.

It has been my custom to send a statement of receipts and expenditures to the parents concerned every half year. If you desire any other arrangements than this, please do not hesitate to let me know. With the funds now in my hands I should have ample to carry the children through the current school year, even without the sum which Dr. Sze still holds. I confess, though, that it is always a bit difficult to plan on vacation times, for vacations furnish a pretty difficult and sometimes complicated problem. Both Alfred and Helen are hoping that they will be invited to pass the Christmas holidays in Washington with Dr. and Mrs. Sze, but, owing to the former's absence, I am not sure this plan will go through. In the meantime, Mrs. Daniel B. Hye of South Weymouth, Massachusetts, has written Helen on several occasions urging her to come to her home for the holidays. The same invitation was extended for the Thanksgiving recess. This morning's mall brings me a letter from Mr. Bye, pleading eloquently that my approval to the visit be given.

Mrs. Nye always speaks as if she were well acquainted with you. She claims to have been a resident in China for sone ten or fifteen years and seems keenly anxious to have the children make her home their headquarters whenever they feel disposed to do so. Not knowing anything about her, I took occasion to inquire of an old Andover friend residing in South Weymouth and learned that Dr. Nye is a dentist there and that the family are regarded highly. I took this step only as a precaution, since Mrs. Bye was a stranger to me, but I judge from the reports given and from what I earlier expected, there is no reason why the children should not accept Mrs. Hye's invitation when they feel so inclined. If you have any reason to think otherwise, please tell me so frankly.

I have read very carefully what you have had to say about both the children and will try to carry out your instruction fully. We are much more sane and reasonable in our athletic training in these days than used to be the case when you were in this country. Our schools, especially, have systematized the athletic work to an extent that pretty definitely prevents the possibility of excesses. I have already ordered for Helen, at her request, a pair of snowshoes and will see that she has some skates, also, when the skating season comes. I am sure that Mrs. Russell will be very careful not to allow any of her girls to venture on ice until is it absolutely safe

Mrs. Russell is doing, I think, just what you would have her do in directing Helen in her life and work. She is one the old type of mothers who are increasingly hard to find in these modern days, and I should consider myself fortunate to have children of my own come under her influence in the impressionable years of their lives. She is tremendously interested in Helen and extremely fond of her, and Helen herself told me only recently that mr.s Russell read to her and worked with her almost daily on her English, and entirely outside of the school hours and requirements. Mrs. Russell is a woman of unusually fine character and high ideals; so that I am sure that her influence on Helen can be only of the best.

For the brief Thanksgiving recess, the latter part of November, I took Helen up to my brother’s at Mont Vernon, New Hampshire, where she stayed several days with her brother and under the care of my brother and his wife. The children were very happy to be together again after the separation of the few weeks that they had been away at their respective schools. Alfred, too, seems to be getting on well, and both my brother and his wife are very fond of him and speak in the highest terms of his spirit and effort.

Again assuring you of my appreciation of your letter and the pleasure I take in doing what I can for your promising and most delightful children while they are in this country, and with all good wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year, believe me

Very sincerely yours,

Mr. Alan Fox,

My dear Alan:

Your letter of July 23rd was forwarded to me, and reached me just before I left the Lake to return to Andover. Under the circumstances, I decided to defer the answer for a few days.

It is true that we did not decide that Mitchell should not return to Andover in the fall. My own personal opinion is that the boy would do better if he were placed in some good small school for a year. I am inclined to think that he had his head turned a bit by the gigness of Andover, and lost his bearings somewhat. Our instructors, and I myself, have been after him Instantly in the hope of persuading him to re adjust his compose, but I cannot feel that we have been very successful. The boy has matured slowly, and is still very much of a “kid.” I have every faith in his final development, chiefly because of the blood that is in him, but I honestly believe that the lesson deprived from a year in a small school, and the inspiration offered by a return to Andover based on a good record in that school would prove excellent medicine for the boy at this stage. I have seen a number of cases of this character where the treatment mentioned has proved most officacious. I feel as you do, that Mitchell ought to complete his course in Andover, and I make the recommendation on that basis.

I have tried to be frank, as you asked me to be, and I do
not wish to be at all dictatorial in the matter. I think the teachers who know the boy best would fully concur in the recommendations which I have made. Don’t hesitate, however, to advise me if you feel I can aid you further, for I realise that you are assuming quite responsibility in the matter.

Very sincerely yours,

Dear Sir:

At the request of your father, from whom I have just received a letter, I am mailing you a copy of our catalogue in the back of which you will find an application form. Your father tells me that you are to enter this school in September in order to complete your preparation for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. We shall be glad to welcome you; and I trust that you will feel perfectly free to call on me for any information or help needed to enable you to complete in as satisfactory a way as possible your plans for admission. Your application and the school testimonial should be sent in at once, since our list for the coming year is already practically full.

Very sincerely yours,

One or two of my Chinese wards have been to the camp in the past, and it commends itself to me as being one of the best and one that will especially meet your needs at this time.

My dear Alfred,

Please consult my brother about your needed clothes. He is better able than I am to tell how such you require at this time. One thing, however, I must make clear, and that is the necessity of keeping your expenditures down within reasonable limits, and chiefly because of the upset conditions in China and the necessary uncertainty which we must face for the future. Until things become more stable over there, you and Helen must do everything in your power to keep year expenses down and so help your father.

Very sincerely yours,

Dear Alfred:

Thank you for your good note received this morning.

The question of your admission to Andover next year will depend almost wholly on the extent to which MU are able to carry your English and Arithmetic by that time. Your English is still pretty much below par, and I am afraid not good enough yet to enable you io do our work here successfully. Further, you will need a strong foundation in Arithmetic in order to handle the Algebra of our first year. I shall talk your case over with my brother at the earliest opportunity and see what he thinks your chances are.

With all good wishes, believe me

Faithfully yours,
