I should not think of raising the question even if I were not confronted with something of a problem in caring properly for the young lady during the difficult period between the closing time of her summer work and the opening of the academic year. My own domestic situation is such that I cannot provide for Miss Tsai in my own home as I used to do in the cases of my Chinese wards in the past. It becomes necessary for me, therefore to find a place for her in Andover and at a time when we are just opening a new school year ourselves, when over six hundred boys are swarming over the place, and when my own hours are crowded to the limit. I have found this period in the past a very difficult one for my Chinese wards and have often been able to secure the cooperation of the schools with which they were registered in caring for them as suggested above. This may not be at all practicable with you and I do not for a moment wish to make any unreasonable request. If such an arrangement were possible, however, it would ease the situation greatly for me. Miss Tsai is due back in Andover this week and could leave for Saint Mary's at almost any day agreeable to you. I myself do not expect to return until the 14th. of the month, but my secretary, Miss Mabel Jones, is thoroughly familiar with the situation and would be ready and glad to make the necessary arrangements for Miss Tsai's trip on receiving official approval from you. I should appreciate it very much, therefore, if you would be willing to send a brief note to Miss Jones advising her whether or not my suggestion can be carried out and it if can on what date you would be ready to receive Miss Tsai. There is one other matter too which I should like to bring to your attention and on which I shall be ready to act entirely on your advice. As a Chinese girl Miss Tsai, like one other Chinese student of her sex committed to my charge, has been allowed to wear at schools attended in America thus far, her own native costumes. I am not prepared at all to argue in favor of this arrangement but I happen to know that Miss Tsai has in her possession at present a very extensive Chinese wardrobe which if not used would have to be packed away for an indefinite period, a responsibility which I naturally am not eager to assume. Miss Tsai’s attitude towards dress is somewhat unusual and very different from that of the other Chinese girl for whom I have acted as American guardian during the last few years. She has in her possession several very beautiful and expensive fur coats given her by her parents. I had had these stored for her with a furrier in Boston and when it came time for her to have them for use the latter part of last fall I asked whether she would care for all or only one or two. She replied that she did not wish any of them. At the time I could get from her no satisfactory explanation of her position; but I learned later from Mrs. Russell, her principal, that she felt that it would not be fair to the other girls in her school for her to have such expensive coats while all or nearly all of her companions had to be content with cheaper articles of wear. She actually purchased and wore during that entire winter a fourteen dollar coat while the fur coats remained in storage. I mention this only to emphasize what I consider a very unusual attitude for an oriental and to indicate that I do not believe that Miss Tsai would take any undue advantage of the privilege if she were permitted to make use of her native wardrobe at Saint Mary's. Very possibly she herself would prefer to adopt the regular American uniform in use at the school. I am simply raising the question, therefore, and shall be ready and glad to abide by whatever decision commends itself as wisest for Miss Tsai and the school as well. At first he showed an imperious attitude and seemed to expect things to be done just about his way. It was a manner that tended to make him very unpopular with the other boys, and we paid special attention to trying to make him see that he was not better than the others and that he would receive no special favors of such a type as his money has unfortunately seemed to give him previously. As a result his whole method of going at things changed, and I think that he not only enjoyed camp more because of having more friends, but also that he left with the reputation of being a good fellow. I hope that he does not slip back into his former attitude because, from other boys, I have heard that it made him unpopular at the Stearns School, and I know that it would not gain him any friends at Andover. Mr. Mills gave Alfred ten hours tutoring, nearly all in English. I hope it helps. Please accept my thanks for the prompt and efficient way in which you have cooperated with me in handling Miss Helen Tsai's case, and please accept, too, my thanks for your readiness to accept the girl at this early season. I found on my return that Miss Jones had arranged to have someone accompany Helen to Peekskill, and while the selection made was perhaps not in every sense ideal, the available candidates for the position being naturally few, but the wife of one of our employees was finally pressed into service, and I infer from her report that she at least succeeded in placing Helen safely in your case. I was not able, however, to explain to her in the way I would have liked to do in order that she might discuss with you frankly Helen's problems and needs. Very probably these will reveal themselves direct to you in time and can be handled properly by you without much suggestion or interference on my part. In general I think you will find Helen exceptionally amenable to the school's regulations and influence. She needs to be taught something of the refinements of life, for while her instincts are all of the best, I find that she has comparatively little idea of the ordinary proprieties, and is inclined to be a bit too free and easy with everyone, especially on comparatively short acquaintances. Perhaps I should not call this a real weakness. I think it is rather pure ignorance, and I am confident that a word of advice now and then along these lines will be helpful and accepted in the best of spirit. She told me when she arrived from China that she had received the nickname of "tom-boy" on the boat coming over, and was quite amused at the fact. I warned her that this seemed in itself to indicate a little lack of control and restraint on her part but I am afraid that my suggestions were not fully appreciated. These characteristics, however, are in my judgment wholly superficial, and I know that they can and will be properly dealt with at St. Mary's. In my experience with many Chinese wards, I have come to feel strongly that it is not wise to press them too early or too strongly with matters and problems relating to religion. Helen, like a number of others of her countrymen whom I have had in my care, comes from a progressive family. Her father is distinctly a scholar who spent many years in his early life studying in this country, but who, I judge, like most of his friends, still lives the Chinese life and follows the Chinese ways. That he probably wishes something better for his children, I have no doubt, though whether he will be willing when the time came to make the sacrifice necessary to bring this about is the real question. It is my guess that he would like to see his children become professing Christians, though he would perhaps not be willing to say as much as this. A friend of his, Mr. C.Y. Sun, one of the most progressive men in China today, who has had four children under my charge, three of them still in this country, wrote to me frankly that he would be glad if his children would of their own accord decide to join the church. The three boys have done so since, and with very little, if any, direct pressure exerted on them to this end. From my experience with the Chinese nature, I am pretty sure that pressure tends to breed an undercurrent of opposition, cleverly concealed on the outside, but strong and very much alive. Where response to such pressure is apparent, it is pretty apt to prove superficial in the end. All of these things I should like very much to talk over with you in person, and perhaps the opportunity may yet appear. I am just thinking aloud a bit at the moment in the hope that these thoughts may prove of some help to you in your dealing with this interesting and promising representative of the Orient.
