Miss Helen Tsai

My dear Helen:

Thank you for your letter of November 12. I am sorry that
I did not answer your last letter, but these have been busy days of late, and I have had little time to do more than the work demanded of me here.

It is nice indeed to knew that you and Alfred are both getting along so well now and are so happy in your work. I knew that this was bound to be the outcome, though I knew also that the first days and even weeks would be a bit hard. Both of you have met the new conditions with wonderfully fine spirit, and I congratulate you heartily.

A word about your Thanksgiving recess. Whatever Mrs. Russell consents to will have my approval. I don’t know, however, what plans the school itself makes for the recess period, and hence I am not ready to authorize a visit to friends elsewhere until I am clear on this point. Most schools do not like to have their pupils leave for the brief Thanksgiving recess, and some refuse outright to allow any to go. That is why I must be governed by Mrs. Russell’s own feelings and wishes in the matter. So please talk with her and ask her if she is willing to drop me a line explaining the situation so that I may cooperate fully with her, and of course for your own good.

With all good wishes, believe me
faithfully yours.

My dear Mr. Tu:

I have read with keen interest your letter of January 26, just received. Evidently the letter has been delayed in its journey.

In the same mail I am writing to your son, endorsing strongly your plans for him. I have felt for a long while that the boy would not profit greatly by a longer stay in America since he apparently is not particularly apt with his studies, though I have no doubt that he would do well on a regular job, especially of the type you have in mind. It has always been my impression that the general education such as he sought in the United States was a bit too long delayed in his case, and that he undertook it at an age when every boy’s ability to absorb and profit by book learning, as we sometimes call it, has become distinctly less active and efficient. If he had started a few years earlier, I am not at all sure that he might not have done well. I can only hope, though, that the American experience will prove to have been of real value to him and that the time and expense involved will not seem to either you or him have been wasted.

With kindest personal regards, believe me

Very sincerely yours.

My dear Admiral Tu:

I have this morning received your nice letter of March 18 with the accompanying draft for six hundred dollars to be credited to the account of your boy. As Kong’s account has been a bit over-drawn, I am glad to have the remittance at this time, though I should have been perfectly willing to handle the matter from this end if you had so desired, especially in view of the tremendous obstacles you face in the matter of exchange in these unusual days.

I am enclosing a statement of the account to date, and I am asking Kong to be especially careful in the m atter of his expenditures, though I have no reason to think that he has not been so up to this time. I wish I felt equally clear that the money you have been investing so generously in the boy’s education had been altogether well spent. Frankly, the reports of the boy’s work, while in some respects not altogether bad, have been anything but encouraging, and he has had to have special attention given by the business college officers to his weaknesses, and they have been a bit disappointed themselves at time on his seeming lack of cooperation. I am enclosing his latest report, received by only a. day or two ago, which shows him failing in three subjects, namely, Law, Rapid Calculation and Typewriting, and with low marks in all the others, with the possible exception of Spelling. The progress mark of D is XX disappointing. Naturally, I cannot help wondering whether is it wise to attempt to keep him here for another year, especially at the financial sacrifice such a course would still bring you. I can only hope, though, that the boy has picked up enough in his training at the business college to prove of some real help to him when he does get back to and starts work in his native land.

With high esteem and kindest personal regards, believe me

Very sincerely yours,

C/o H.K.Tong

Tientsin, China

My dear Mr. Tu:

Your two letters of November 14 and 22 reached me a few days ago. As I have already answered them in good part in my letter of November 26, I have not much to add at this time.

I found Kong heartbroken over the decision that he return to China and he pleaded with me so earnestly to be given a little longer chance to make good hear that I yielded and allowed him to transfer to the local high school in the hope that his work there, which is distinctly easier than the work in our own school, might prove within his reach and permit him to secure the high school diploma which would gain him admission to a higher institution for more special work. I talked the matter over with the principal of the high school who promised to follow the case carefully and keep me fully advised as to the boy’s progress and prospects. I know, too that several of the teachers in the school who are well known to me have gone out of their way to give Kong personal instruction and help.

I have not yet received sufficient information from those who are working with the boy to enable me to determine definitely whether the experiment is likely to prove a success or not. Such incomplete records as have come to me thus far have not been very encouraging, I must admit. My fear and belief are that Kong is a bit too old to handle elementary work and retain permanently the values which he should derive from it. Of his spirit and effort of late, I can speak only in the highest terms. The boy is tremendously in earnest and distressed beyond words that he has not be able to make better progress thus far.

I hope every earnestly that you will approve of the plane adopted, and I am assuming, in view of your cabled message, that once we are assured here that the desired end cannot be attained, the authority to send the boy back to China is still mine. Unless I hear from you to the contrary, I shall act on this understanding.

As this is our Christmas holiday season, please accept the season’s greetings from me, and my heartiest good wishes for the coming New Year.

Very sincerely yours.

Dear Mr. Tu:

I have been following up as closely at possible of late Kong's status and progress at the Burdett Business College, and have been immensely pleased note the generous and helpful cooperation which the college authorities themselves have given me.

This morning into receipt of a report from Long's department head, forwarded to me by the vice-president of the institution, and am taking the liberty of enclosing this report herewith so that you may note for yourself exactly how matters stand at this time. Several weeks ago I was inclined to be distinctly pessimistic in regard to the outcome of Long's work at Burdett. Apparently things have changed a bit for the better, and I can only hope that the change will prove to have been permanent and that the improvement already noted will become more pronounced during the balance of the year. May I quite a comment or two made by Vice-President Wells in sending me this report:

“We are somewhat encouraged. The method devised seems to have brought some result. Mr. Tu has worked in accordance with the regulations devised, and though he found it difficult at first, he adapted himself quite readily as time went on.”

“I have discussed this report with Mr. Tu and have told him that it is being forwarded to you. It is my belief that he is somewhat impressed by his own progress, and if the system is continued, there is likelihood that it might bring the result which is desired. At least, we believe it to be promising enough to warrant a continuance, and we shall proceed in accordance with the same schedule unless you deem it wise that we change.”

With warm personal regards, believe me

Very sincerely yours.

Admiral H.K.Tu
c/o H. K. Tong
Chilili River Commission
Tientsin. China

My dear Mr. Tu:

You are doubtless wondering why your earlier instructions have not been carried out to date and Kong returned to you. There is a rather long story involved, but I will touch on it only briefly that you may have a clear understanding of the essential factors in the situation.

When I gave Kong your message he was greatly distressed and pleaded with me for another chance, suggesting that he could continue work in our local high school where the demands would not be so severe as at Phillips Academy, and in the hope of securing eventually a high school diploma which would enable him to enter a college or graduate school where he could get special training in dentistry. As I have already written you, we could find no dental school worthy the name that would admit a pupil with less than a complete high school course.

I finally yielded to Kong's urgent pleadings and arranged with the principal of the local high school for the boy to begin work there. After a few weeks one of his teachers came to see me and reported that she was sure the boy could not do the work. To give him every chance in the world, however, I allowed him to continue several weeks longer, at which time the principal, a personal friend of mine - told me frankly that he could not properly allow Kong to remain there longer as he was not able to do the work even with the outside help which some of his teachers generously give him. I sent for Kong, therefore, and told him that I did not see how I could do anything else but follow your earlier instructions and require him to return to China. He was greatly depressed, naturally, and assured me that he could and would in some way secure training in dentistry which would enable him to realise your ambition for him. I tried, but without success, to explain to him that I felt this would be a mistake and that it seemed to me that he probably ought to consider a totally different kind of occupation, possibly business, in which he might very naturally meet with success.

A day later I heard from the boy that he had gone to Boston to consult a Chinese friend and would advise me a bit later of his plans. This morning I have a letter from him in which he says, -
"I am working about three hours a day in a doctor's home and I can get my room and board free and besides that I get a little amount of money, so I think I can get along without my father's help.

I am studying at Boston English High School and take four subjects. I try to study as hard as I can.

I am not going home before I finish high school.

I wish you would tell my father what are the plans I have in my mind when you write to him."

When Kong left me I told him that in view of your instructions I could not properly use the funds you had placed in my hands to meet his further expenses in this country unless authorised to do so by you. but that I would gladly follow your instructions in the matter so soon as these were known to me. The boy seemed to appreciate my position and readily accepted the situation, assuring me that he would find some kind of a job to earn for himself needed funds. Whether he can make enough to get along on from his present job. I am not prepared to say. His spirit and earnestness in the matter, however, seem to be of the best.
I am really at a loss to know what to do under the circumstances, and must ask again your advice. If Kong can accomplish his purpose I shall be only too delighted, and will be ready to congratulate him and you most heartily. On the other hand in view of the judgments expressed by our own teachers at Phillips Academy and those in our local high school, I cannot, of course, feel that the boy is going to be able to reach his goal. I am a bit anxious, too, lest he became thoroughly discouraged and despondent. I do not see how I can do otherwise, therefore, than state the situation to you just as I see it and await your further advice. If you decide that the boy should go forward in his attempt, I am sure that a word of encouragement from you will help him greatly. On the other hand whether I alone can persuade him to return to China without some pretty definite and persistent instructions from you, I seriously doubt. Please understand, however, that I am as willing and eager as always to do everything in my power for the good of the boy and to help you realise your highest desires for him.

Say I take this opportunity to thank you most heartily for your welcome and generous Christmas gift, which I shall always praise most highly. In view of the seemingly little which I have been able to do for Kong, the gift seems all the less deserved.

Very sincerely yours.

My dear Mr. Tu:

At last your wonderful Christmas present has reached its destination, a^'d I hack the privilege of opening the box only two or three days ago and reveling In the attractions of its contents. Nothing could give me greater pleasure than the receipt of a present of this kind, for the earlier cloisonne work of your wonderfully clever artists has always appealed very strongly to me, and the few pieces that I already possess have been among my most valued treasures.

I did not dream, when you wrote of sending me a small Christmas token, that you for a moment thought of sending me anything so valuable as the gifts which are now on my parlor table. They make me very humble when I think how little I have done to deserve them, but I am sure that they will prove an added incentive to me to strive hard in the future to carry out your wishes for your boy. My thanks are very hearty and sincere, and I shall al aye think of your friendly generosity when X look upon these visible tokens of your good will.

Even if the Christmas season for which they were intended, did not record their arrival and nearly two months have passed since that holiday. I am taking some satisfaction in the thought that they have reached me about the time of your own New Year holiday season, which, in turn, comes the nearest of anything to embracing the holiday spirit that we associate here with Christmas.

Sincerely and gratefully yours.

My dear Mr. Tu:

I am this morning in receipt of your good letter of January 25 as well as one from your brother of January 27. Your brother’s letter contains a check, for $500.00 to be credited to your son’s account.

I am glad to secure from your letter the information needed to enable me to deal properly with Kong’s case. As I have just written you, the boy is now working in Boston, and I am sure he will be delighted when he learns the good news of your willingness to allow him to try out this new arrangement and to back him financially as well as you can while he does so. The boy had reached the point where he was ready to earn his way. If necessary, in the earnest endeavor to teach the goal which you had set him. I am still a bit skeptical as to what the outcome is to be, but at least I am sure that nothing can be lost by giving Kong this extra chance and that there will be some education to him in the experience itself. In the meantime we will continue to hope for the best.

Please accept my heartiest greetings and good wishes for the coming New Tear.

Very sincerely yours.
