So far as I can judge there is no good reason for you to go to the expense of purchasing a rifle or pistol for which you would be likely to have little or no use after the camp closes. Boys at Andover are not allowed to have any fire arms in their possession during the school year. Unless Mr. Sanborn feels strongly that you should make this investment I am unwilling to sanction it. I cannot make out from your letter for what purpose you desire the five dollars asked for. Here again I must rely on Mr. Sanborn's judgment. If this is a necessary expense I feel sure that Mr. Sanborn will be willing to advance you the money need and add it to your camp bill for incidentals, in which case I shall of course be perfectly willing to pay it. Whatever Alfred really needs in the way of camp equipment I shall be perfectly willing to have you purchase. On the other hand since he will have each slight use for most camp material I should much prefer to have him rent these things for the current summer if this can be done. As for the tutoring I hardly know what to say. Alfred tried the exams for admission to our Lower Middle year but failed them pretty badly. In my opinion he needs more than anything else some stiff drill in English, grammar and composition, spelling, etc., and work in Algebra and perhaps Arithmetic. He ought to be able to take our second year French but I doubt whether he can make it and I imagine that it would be a waste of time to work on that subject this summer. My advice would be for you to write, or telephone to Mr. Lynde who is in charge of the admissions at Andover and ask him what he thinks Alfred should work at in view of his previous work at Mont Vernon and the character of his entrance examination papers. I hope all goes well with you. Alfred wrote at first that he was dissatisfied and homesick and wished to leave his camp. Now he writes that he is happy and contented. What a "kid" he still is. We are having a quiet summer here with occasional fishing trips out on the lake and with plenty of gardening and other work out of doors.
