In the absence of Principal Stearns I beg to reply to your favor of the sixth instant.

We are sorry to learn that Mr. Chu’s health is not good and sincerely hope that the summer may prove beneficial to him in this way. Dr. Page of our faculty has general oversight of the health of all of our students and as each new boy is given a thorough physical examination on entrance I am sure he will be interested in Mr. Chu’s case and do what he can for him. It will certainly be advisable for the young man to take the best care of himself that he can during the summer as he will no doubt be very busy after he takes up work here.

Very sincerely yours,

Mr. Ying Chiun Lo

Dear Sir:

In the absence of Principal Stearns permit us to acknowledge the receipt of your favor of the sixth.

I note that you plan to enter Cornell this Fall and ask for a certificate covering the work you have passed here. If you will look up in the Cornell catalogue the conditions for admission on certificate you will find that only graduates of approved schools are given that privilege. Since you have not yet graduated here, I suppose it will, therefore, be impossible for us to fill out for you a regular Cornell certificate covering the work you have done. No doubt Mr. Stearns will be entirely willing to give you a letter of honorable dismissal, but I fear he could not sign the form which you sent, because you have said, “No”, to the question which asks if you have “taken an entrance examination held by a college or by the C.E.E. Board”. Probably you did not notice that the question refers to any college examinations.

No doubt the wisest thing for you to do would be for you to see Mr. Hoy, the registrar of Cornell, and talk the matter over with him.

Very sincerely yours,

My dear Mr. Tu:

I have your interesting letter of March 17 witii the accompanying copy of your letter of the. same date to your hoy. Both have been read with keen and deep interest.

I have tried to keep in as close touch as possible with Kong, even though he is not here in school, and he has been very responsive in telling me of his work and plans and hopes. When I found how much time he was devoting to outside work by which to earn his expenses, I felt that it would be utterly impossible for the boy, to whom studies come hard at best, to take all this time from his school work and hope to make any progress at all. Under the circumstances, and in view of the suggestions in your earlier letter, I advised Kong to give up this outside work at once, to devote all of his time to his studies, and to count on me to supply from the funds which you have furnished sufficient money to meet his actual needs. It was my idea that if the boy were to have this last chance to go ahead with his American education, he should have it free from all possible handicaps in order that we should be in a proper position to determine as a result of the year’s work what to plan for the future.

I hope you will approve of this decision of mine and the action prompted by it. In the meantime I am, of course, urging Kong to give himself heart and soul to his studies and to do his best to prove to us that he is going to be able to make real progress and eventually attain the goal you have set him and on the basis of which his school courses are now arranged. I do hope that we may be able to report real progress.

So far as I can Judge, Kong has not been disposed to make friends with boys who are not actuated by high purposes. I have constantly warned him of this very point, and, from what he tells me of the friends with whom he is most intimately thrown in contact, I am led to believe that they are boys of good character and serious purpose.

With kindest personal regards and the earnest hope that I may be able to be of some real and further assistance to you and to your boy, believe me

Very sincerely yours,

Mr. Sao-Ke Alfred Sze
Chinese Legation
Washington, D. C

My dear Mr. Sze:

Your three letters of recent date have reached my desk this morning. Accept, please, my thanks for them and especially for the clear and intelligent way in which you have helped me deal with this rather knotty and troublesome problem.

I note that Mary is to leave Washington at 7: 30 P.M. tomorrow, April 8. I will try to get in touch with Arthur by telephone to-night so as to be sure that he will be on hand to meet Mary on her arrival in Boston Friday morning. If he is unable to do this, I can probably arrange to have some one go in from here.

I note also that you and Charlie have both agreed that Mary should finish out the year at the Whittier School, pursuing special work with the object of preparing for college in this shortest possible time. The suggestion that Elmira is probably the best fitted for Mary’s needs meets, on the whole, with my full approval, and I shall await with interest any farther information you may be able to secure from the Elmira authorities as to the admission requirements that will be demanded of Mary and the possibilities of having her do special work during the summer with some competent and reliable member of the college faculty. Such an arrangement would be a great relief, for I must admit that one of the most difficult problems I have faced with Mary has been to provide satisfactorily for the long summer vacations. I can’t tell you how deeply I appreciate your friendly helpfulness and how greatly relieved I am to feel that I can count on your generous assistance in dealing with this problem from now on.

On my return from my visit to Washington I wrote Mr. Sun at great length and in detail, describing the situation, telling him of my discussion with you and the conclusions which we reached, and outlining as clearly as I could the complete picture. I told him how difficult the problem had been made through the unwarranted interference by well-meaning but uninformed friends of Mary and that you and I had both come to feel that the arrangement with the Wittier School should continue for the balance of the year. I also intimated that I did not consider Mary responsible for the trouble and that my whole object had been to shield her from the interference of her friends whose attitude and actions could only tend to distract her thoughts and interfere with her work. I agree with you that under the circumstances a further cable message seems hardly necessary.

The reference in one of your letters to Mary’s request for the release of "all restrictions placed upon her, such as receiving and sending correspondence and receiving visitors, since her going to Merrimac" is a bit difficult for me to understand. As I have explained to Mary, no definite restriction was placed on the correspondence by me except during the first two days she was at Merrimac, and then only for her own protection. I suggested to her, by letter as well as by telephone that she should not devote too much of her time to writing to her friends, only because this would consume time which should of necessity be given to her lessons. It was also stated frankly that she could receive visitors on the regular day set apart by the school for that purpose but that she must not ask for or expect to receive special favors in this direction that were not granted the other girls, as advertised in the school catalogue. Most certainly I have no desire to assume any attitude or take any steps that shall prevent Mary from having a reasonable and proper contact with her friends, provided only she doesn’t indulge in excesses in this direction which would necessarily interfere with her work and progress and hinder the attainment of the goal that we all had in mind for making the change of school and in investing the extra money that such a change made necessary.

With sincere appreciation of your many favors and with kindest regards, believe me

Very sincerely yours.

My dear Admiral Tu:

Your interesting letter of September 18 reached me several days ago and I am delighted to learn from that Kong has reached his home safely. My hope is that he will be able to find a suitable position which he can feel with efficiency and credit. Some regular hours and steady hard work should help the boy immensely in developing proper habits of endeavor and stability of character. Please remember me most surely to him and give him my best wishes for success in meeting the new responsibilities which are to be this.

Yes, the boy did overdraw a bit on his account before he left, but I am glad to say that the amount is small. I am enclosing a statement covering the period since the last statement was rendered to you which will show the exact status of the account. May I also assure you that iwt will not be the least embarrassing to me to allow the account to stand as it is for a time if you desire to do so. In view of the very adverse exchange which you must face in remitting funds from China to this country, it would seem only fair to wait a bit in the hope perfectly free, therefore, to let the account stand as it is, for I shall not worry about it in the least, knowing that in due season it will be properly taken care of.

I think I ought to add a word in regard to Kong’s handling of his funds. In spite of all the difficulties we have encountered in our endeavors to xx Kong’s ambition for intellectual achievements. I must say that I think the boy has done remarkably well in keeping his expenses down. Certainly he has done far better than most of the Chinese for whom I have privileged to set as guardian during recent years. Occasionally he has asked for small amounts for things that perhaps were not absolutely essential, and yet which from the point of view of a large majority of boys of his age have been accepted as a matter of course. When he was about to leave for home, I gave him at his request a small amount to invest in presents for his family and friends, an investment which I felt that you under circumstances would approve. The final remittance of twenty dollars sent by wire to San Francisco was a result of telegram received from him just as he was about to sail from that port, saying that he had lost his passport and needed the extra money in order to carry through this program. I do feel, though, that they boy deserves commendation for the way in which in general he has kept his expenditures down.

I am delighted to hear of your promotion to the Presidency of the Naval College at Fukien. May every success attend your efforts and make this institution a real and helpful factor in the advancement of China. We all think of you these days and with feeling of deepest sympathy and pity as we note the extent and depth of the appalling catastrophe from which you are still suffering. My hope is that out of this affliction may come influences tending to unify and strengthen the nation as a whole in the development of a new and better spirit of altruism and good will.

Again let me assure you of my constant friendship and good will. While I fell that I have been sadly remiss in helping Kong to attain these high ideals which you have always cherished for him and with which I have sympathized so deeply, I feel that I have been more than rewarded for what little I have tried to do in coming thereby in contact with you and profiting as I have so definitely done by that rare spirit of friendly confidence and good will which you have manifested always. I do wish, and I dare hope, that our paths may again cross before we are called upon to surrender our earthly tasks.

With warm personnel regards and every best wish to you and yours. Believe me,

Very sincerely yours.

My dear Mr. Smith:

I wonder if you can and will be good enough to give me, or ask some other informed person, to send me information covering the work and standing of a Chinese ward of mine, Kong Y. Tu. The boy has been quite a problem. but hie father is one of the finest and highest minded Chinese I have met among the many I have known In the last twenty-five years. He is terribly in earnest about his son, and ambitious to have him make the most of his American experience and training. This the boy certainly did not do during the earlier years of his American life.

With the father’s full approval, I authorised Tu to take a course with you at Burdett. So far I have received no official information as to how the boy has been getting on, I shall be deeply indebted to you, as will the father, if you will give me some information along this line.

Very sincerely yours,

My dear Arthur:

I have met received your letter of March 23 and with it the accompanying receipts.

I am leaving in about an hour for Washington in order to discuss frankly and fully with your minister, Mr.Sze, Mary’s problem which has punished and troubled me so much. I am not sure that Mr.Sze can help me, but at least I am anxious that he should know all sides of the story so that whatever advice he has to offer may be based on a full and not a biased or distorted view of the situation.

Mrs.Russell told me on the telephone only yesterday that Mary was taking hold of her work in fine spirit and that she, herself, believed that Mary could hold her own in college if a way could be found to get her through the admission doors. If, by any chance, Mary can enter college this coming fall through special concession, I shall be inclined to feel that the change, in spite of its bad features, is perhaps, after all, worth while. Of course if Mary were to return to Abbot right now, she would feel and her Abbot friends would feel that their intercessions and pressure had brought the thing to pass and that they had succeeded in overriding my authority: and from that moment Mary would naturally have no further respect for the judgment of either Miss Clemons or myself and the work and sacrifices of the past five years would have been made in vain. Under the circumstances I should be disposed to feel that would be necessary for me to surrender the guardianship of Mary, entrusted to me by your father, but to whom and how would be the big question.

Mary comes to Andover next Saturday and will be here until Sunday night anyway. It was our idea that Mary could leave for Washington Sunday evening and that you could meet her in Boston and put her on the train. Mary, herself, I think would prefer to go by a day train, but I really believe it would be easier and simpler for her to take the night trip, going at once to bed and rising at the end of the journey in Washington. Miss Clemons will telephone you details later, or perhaps it might be even better for you to call up the house not later than Friday end talk with Miss Clemons about Mary’s plans.

Hastily but sincerely yours

35 Woodside Ave.
Amhrest, Mass.

Dear Charlie:

Your good letter has just reached me, and I am enclosing a check
for $300. 00, as requested. It seems to me that you have been very careful with your money, and I am not aware that you have been overspending. I only wish that I could get Tommie to view things as you do. It would be a fine thing for him and would at the same time relieve my anxieties a lot.

As to taking a job at the college restaurant next year, I really don’t approve of it and I doubt very much if your father would wish you to do it. Of course there is no real harm in it, and for some follow, especially if it is actually a necessity, work of this kind is an excellent character builder. My impression is that, If you take the job, it would mean the exclusion of some other fellow in greater need than you and it would also mean, of course, a definite lens of time from your college work. Any I should go slow before reaching a final decision.

Yes, we had a sudden epidemic of influence tiers, lasting for about two weeks and of a very light and seemingly harmless quality. About sixty boys, all told, were affected, but the illness hardly ever lasted more than three or four days. Our friends at Exeter, unfortunately, have been having a much harder time. Scarlet fever has kept them busy. For goodness sake keep away from the dogs At Amherst if they ore in a bad way, as you intimate.

Yes, I have heard from Mary lately and more often from her Andover friends who still persist in trying to keep the waters troubles. Only this moaning, before coming to the office, I talked with Mary’s principal, Mrs. Russell, who tells me that Mary is getting on well, working hard, and to all outside appearances at least, happy and contented. Mary writes me in the same vein, but unfortunately she writes those like her Abbot friends in a wholly different one. It is a bit hard to know just how she really does feel, though I am sure she is not suffering.

Because of the persistent and unreasonable efforts of her Abbot friends to have her return to that school for the balance of the year, I find it necessary to make a special trip to Washington to talk the whole matter over fully and frankly with your ambassador, Mr.Sze. At Mr.Sze’s request Mary is to pass her Easter vacation at the Legation in Washington, and I am hopeful that by the end of that period, at least, we shall know where we stand. It has been a hard and perplexing situation, but I have sought most conscientiously to do only what I understood to be your father’s wish. I understand that your friend, Mr. Robinson, is coming to America this Spring. Both your father and he have written me to that effect I can imagine that he will be glad to see all you boys again.

What are your plans for the Easter holidays?

With all good wishes, believe me
                     Faithfully yours.

Miss Mary Sun
The Chinese Legation Washington, V. C.

Deer Mary:

I have your letters of recent date and the accompanying letter of Mrs. Bridgman to Mr.Sze. This morning I wired Mr.Sze money in response to your request, though I can’t quite understand why the extra money is going to be needed in view of the earlier remittance sent you. Even though Charlie may run a little short, sixty dollars seems an absurdly large amount under the circumstances, and I am particularly concerned because of the excessive expense which your father has had to face already in connection with the change of school and plan of study. It is absolutely necessary for you to keep every expense just now down to the least possible limit, and the Washington trip must be included in this plan.

I have wired both you and Mr. Sze explaining that extra visits just now should not be undertaken because of the big task we have on our hands to get you ready for college in the shortest reasonable time. Your scheduled vacation is more than generous, and I find from talking with Mrs. Russell that she is all ready to set you at work at once and before the actual term opens. I have told her, therefore, that I would arrange for you to go directly back after the Washington visit, for I am sure that a few days of extra work will help us in accomplishing the purpose outlined by your father. Just let me know in advance when you expect to reach Andover, and make it as seem as you can so that we can plan accordingly. The roads are good here now, and I can doubtless run you over myself to Merrimac and so save at least one little item of extra expense.

Very sincerely yours,
