My dear Mr. Tu:

I am very grateful to you for your letter of December 28 recently received.

I have urged your son to write you oftener, for I am distressed that he should have neglected this plain duty and privilege. There is no excuse for this, and I shall try to make this clear to him from now on.

I am sending you this week a statement of the account to date, so that you may know just how far and in what way the boy’s money has been extended. I am also acknowledging this week the receipt from your brother of an additional check for $600.00 which has been credited to your boy’s account.

With kind personal regards, believe me
Very sincerely yours,

My dear Mr. Tu

I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your kind letter of December 21 with enclosed check for $600.00 which, as requested, I have deposited to the account of your nephew, K.Y.Tu, to be used for the necessary expenses in connection with hie American life and education. I am sending your brother this week the semiannual statement of the boy’s account.

I note the message which you desire me to convey to your nephew. Let me say that the sentiments you have expressed have my heartiest endorsement and that I have on various occasions sought to impose these same ideals on the lad who,up to date, has not seemed to develop a very seirous purpose or a clear understanding of the opportunities offered him and the responsibilities which are naturally his. I believe the boy has changed for the better in this respect this last term, and I am hopeful that still better reports may be forthcoming as the year goes on.

If it is not too late, may I extend to you and yours my heartiest good wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year and the hope that the disturbed conditions which seem to prevail in China today may speedily disappear with attendant peace and justice to all.

Very sincerely yours,

Mr. K.Y.Tu
Genesee Wesleyan Seminary
Lima, N.Y.

My dear Tu:

I have just received a letter from your uncle, Mr.F.S.Tu, with the request that I should convey to you this message: “That time once gone will never return, the time for studying, that is in the time of youth, is very short, in comparison with the length of time in manhood, so there is ample time for pleasure, when education and knowledge have been acquired during the days of youth, thereby there will remain nothing to regret in the long days to come.”

Your uncle adds that your father has been mush disappointed in your failure to make greater progress in your studies and in your seeming lack of a sense of responsibility about your financial affairs. I have written your father that in this latter respect I feel that you have shown definite improvement this year, and I earnestly hope that my belief will prove fully justified by a continued improvement in this respect on your part so that I may later assure your father that you are steadily gaining in this as well as in other ways.

One other thing: I am not willing that you should stay at your present school beyond this current year. It is imperative that you should enter by that time a school of higher and more advanced standing, but to carry the harder work successfully it is equally important that you should give your very best endeavors to the work you are now called upon to do.

Very sincerely yours.

My dear Mr. Tu:

I have delayed answering your letter of November 26 in the hope that I might be able to acknowledge receipt of and thank you for the onerous Christens tokens which you refer to as having sent me by American express. So far the box has not yet appeared but I am just as grateful to you for the thought, even though the actual objects may have been lost. It was good of you to think of me, especially at the Christmas season, though it is my earnest wish that you should not feel that you are in any way obligated to me because of the little that I have tried, and am still trying to do for year son. I count it a real privilege to be able to help these youngsters from a foreign land to make the most of their Amarican stay and connections, and I have derived a great deal of enjoyment in the attempt.

I think it only fair to say that your boy appears to be facing his financial obligations this year with a much keener sense of responsibility than he had previously shown. While his natural inclination is to spend freely, he seems at least to have kept his expenses pretty well within bound since current school year opened. I am not sure that he is making quite so good progress in his studies as he ought to make. I have constantly urge him and his instructors as well to

We are naturally concerned over the reports that reach us from China these days, and I can only hope that matters will eventually and speedily adjust themselves on a plane that represents complete justice to all and that will guarantee for the future a strong and united nation. I can well imagine that the strain upon you must be very great in these uncertain days, and my sympathy and good will go out to you in fullest measure.
Wishing you a truly happy and prosperous New Year and with kind personal regards, believe me

 Very sincerely yours.

Commander H.K.Tu
Admiralty House
Nanking, China

My dear Mr. Tu:

Your boy is considerably exercised over his financial prospects, for, as you may well imagine, the money which you sent him has been very largely spent already in meeting obligations considered at the outset of his American career. I have recently paid up several accounts for him which were based on loans made by friends when he was awaiting funds from home and legitimate bills contracted since his arrival here have been paid so far as the funds permitted. I am enclosing a statement so you may see where the money placed in my hands has gone to date, and I shall be glad to send you, if you desire, the receipts covering these expenditures which I hold in my files.

Under the circumstances I hope that we shall receive further and early remittances from you, for I don’t like to let bills run and I dislike exceedingly to borrow funds in behalf of individual boys. It is pretty difficult for these in China to realize the enormous increase in the price of living and everything else that has taken place in America during the last few years. It is certainly no exaggeration to say that it costs Chinese boys who come to us in these modern days at least double as much for the necessities of life and for their educational expenses as it cost the boys who used to come to us fifteen or twenty years go and for whom I acted as American guardian at that times. We all regret that this is so, but cannot do anything but accept the plain facts that surround us.

I have every reason to think that your son is working very hard to prepare himself to meet the requirements which will enable him to take a regular place in the school next year and complete with us his preparation for the higher institution and more advanced work. He seems most responsive to whatever suggestion I am disposed to make to him and very eager to do the right thing by us all.

Very sincerely yours.
