C/o H.K.Tong
Chihli River Commission
Tientsin, China

My dear Mr. Tu:

Your two letters of November 14 and 22 reached me a few days ago. As I have already answered them in good part in my letter of November 26, I have not much to add at this time.

I found Kong heartbroken over the decision that he return to China and he pleaded with me so earnestly to be given a little longer chance to make good hear that I yielded and allowed him to transfer to the local high school in the hope that his work there, which is distinctly easier than the work in our own school, might prove within his reach and permit him to secure the high school diploma which would gain him admission to a higher institution for more special work. I talked the matter over with the principal of the high school who promised to follow the case carefully and keep me fully advised as to the boy’s progress and prospects. I know, too that several of the teachers in the school who are well known to me have gone out of their way to give Kong personal instruction and help.

I have not yet received sufficient information from those who are working with the boy to enable me to determine definitely whether the experiment is likely to prove a success or not. Such incomplete records as have come to me thus far have not been very encouraging, I must admit. My fear and belief are that Kong is a bit too old to handle elementary work and retain permanently the values which he should derive from it. Of his spirit and effort of late, I can speak only in the highest terms. The boy is tremendously in earnest and distressed beyond words that he has not be able to make better progress thus far.

I hope every earnestly that you will approve of the plane adopted, and I am assuming, in view of your cabled message, that once we are assured here that the desired end cannot be attained, the authority to send the boy back to China is still mine. Unless I hear from you to the contrary, I shall act on this understanding.

As this is our Christmas holiday season, please accept the season’s greetings from me, and my heartiest good wishes for the coming New Year.

Very sincerely yours.

My dear Mr. Rice:

Thank you for your prompt and satisfactory reply to my recent letter of inquiry.

I am afraid that the distances involved in connection with the dental colleges you have mentioned would prove prohibitive even if It seemed wise for other reasons to advise my Chinese friend to take a course in one of those dental schools, evidently the first thing for him to do in any case is to secure the full equivalent of a high school training.

Very sincerely yours.

My dear Mr. Rice:

Thank you for your clear-cut reply to my recent letter of inquiry.
I am afraid that your young Chinese friend is not fully qualified to meet the entrance requirements of the Tufts College Dental School though I have not yet received the catalogue and so have had no chance to examine in detail the nature and extent of the requirements in question. My assumption is based on your own references to them.

I wonder if you would be good enough to offer suggestions, if you have any, which would help me in finding a plane for this youngster to study dentistry. Of course if he were an American boy, I should not dream of urging him to do this without a thorough and sound preparation. As it Is, I am simply trying to carry out his father’s instructions and do not know just where to turn. I imagine that in China, at least, a dentist with a limited background might still render real service to his country. If there are any fairly responsible schools with admission standards that would enable this boy to get started, would you be willing to call my attention to them.

Thanking you in advance for any help you can give me in a somewhat difficult problem, believe me

Very sincerely yours,

Madford, Mass.

Dear Sir:

Will you kindly send me such information as you have available relating to the admission requirements of the Tufts Dental School, and may I also ask whether you would be willing to accept a Chinese student on the basis of special student?

I have under my care, among others, a Chinese boy now twenty-one years of age whose father has been a prominent official in the Northern Government of China and who is anxious to have his boy to study dentistry. Unfortunately, the boy in question has not had extensive work along the lines which we naturally expect of boys who are in this country entering on their professional school work, and because of his age, I don’t believe he ought to attempt it. He has, however, had three years in this country, investing most of this time in the Genesee Wesleyan Seminary in New York State and part of it here at Andover.

In view of the circumstances above mentioned, I can’t help forlonging that this boy should start at once on his professional work, if this can be arranged. On the other hand, if there is some further preparation which from your point of view seems desirable and necessary, I should be prepared to plan for it if it is not to involve too long a period of time.

Any help or suggestions you are willing to give me to aid me solving my problem will be very deeply appreciated.

Very sincerely yours.

My dear Tu:

I am enclosing report cards which I recently received and which cover the work which your boy have recently been doing at the Genesee Wesleyan Seminary and still later at summer session of the Hungtington School in Boston. The reports emphasize the very mediocre quality of your son’s performance and raise seriously the question as to his ability or willingness to meet the scholarship requirements which will be demanded of him here at Andover. He has been very insistent that he should be allowed to undertake our work, and I am willing to grant him the opportunity, though I must admit with serious misgivings as to the outcome.

I am still unable to determine in my own mind whether the difficulty is due to lack of ability or the boy’s part or lack of serious purpose. Both the factors probably enter into the situation, though I am inclined to think that the latter plays the more important part. Once your son has shown us what is able and willing to do, I can form a better opinion as to the real difficulty and can in convenience, perhaps, plan more wisely for his future. On the basis of his work to date, however, I can’t help questioning seriously the wisdom of continuing indefinitely the experiment of an American education.

Very sincerely yours.

My dear Hr. Tu;

I am very grateful for your letter of July 15, and for the copy of your letter to your boy. The sentiment you have express in the letter meets my full approval. I can only hope that your boy will take to heart and profit by it, such sane and wholesome advice.
It is difficult for me to say just what further preparations your son will require to enable him to take up the definite study of dentistry. The Harvard Dental School, probably the best in the country, now requires a college degree from the students who enter it. This would mean, of course, a much longer period of preparation, and I doubt whether you would wish your boy to consider it. There are excellent dental schools which require much less for admission, but just how much I do not know, for it is unusual for our boys to enter that profession, at least, until they have secured their college degrees. On my return to Andover next month, I shall look into the matter and may be able to advise you more fully.

In the meantime, your boy is to take up work with us at Phillips Academy this fall and I shall be, therefore, much better able to learn at first hand of his abilities and possibilities for the future. He has needed a pretty thorough grounding in more elementary subjects than we teach at Phillips Academy. That is why I have been willing to allow him to take the work elsewhere up to this time. I am still a bit doubtful as to his ability to carry the higher work that will be required of him at Andover, but we will give him a chance and reserve final judgment until later. I cannot feel that he has made the best use of his time to date, and have told him that it seemed to me that he ought to be progressing more rapidly. This last year I have come to feel that he has developed more ambitions and has worked harder. If this impression is correct his progress from now on ought to be much more marked.

I can assure you that I shall do every thing in my power to urge him to make the best possible out of the opportunity you have given him, and which comes only once in a boys lifetime.
With kindest personal regards, believe me.

Very sincerely yours,

My Dear Tu:
On my return to Andover I find your letter of July 18 with accompanying receipts. Thanks for both.

I am sending you the extra case for the month, as requested, but can’t understand why $90.00 should not prove ample for your board and lodging. $90.00 per month is the full allowance which the Chinese boys at Tech have received from me and one of them, Frank Lin, has been getting along on $60.00 per month only. This has been during the college year, too, when expenses are naturally heavier than they are in summer. $50.00 a month for board is absurdly excessive, and you ought to do far better than that. I am sending the cash under protest, therefore, and with expectation that for the month of August you will find a way to keep the expenses much lower.

Yours sincerely yours

My dear Mr. Bourgeois:

Mr. K.Y. Tu, of whom you inquire, is a ward of mine and has been for the past two years at the Genesee Wesleyan Seminary, Lima, N.Y. So far as I know, he is a boy of good habits and character, though he has found it a bit difficult to adapt himself to American ways and methods of study. He is hoping to enter Phillips Academy next fall, though I am not quite sure that he is prepared for our work.

I hope very much that you can find a place in your dormitory for Mr. Tu during the summer months, for otherwise I should not care to have him stay in Boston. His present plan is to take course in the Huntington Summer School, and I have no reason to believe that you will not find him in every way an acceptable member of your dormitory group.

Very sincerely yours.
