<text>Dear Dr. Stearns,

You must have received my last letter by this time. Minister Sze, who has been in the United States for the last four weeks, is now back again in England. During his sojourn in New York, he managed to get in touch with Charlie Stearns, to whom he has entrusted that piece of jade from my father. He wishes me to inquire whether it has safely reached you.

I am working here as usual, being more usually busy these two weeks in helping Dr. Sze to clear his desk of the work accumulated during his absence. Last week I had the good fortune of attending the Court Levee with Minister Sze, when I saw the King of England. The Palace interior was very beautiful and when adorn by the dazzling uniforms of the various officers and diplomats, it presented sight hard to forget.

With kindest regards,

                <text>Dear Dr. Stearns;

I am writing you, Sir, on Christmas Eve all alone in an apartment house in the heart of old London. Two secreatries [sic] of the Legation had dinner with me in a Chinese restaurant; we had each a glass of wine for good cheer on the Happy Season. They then came to my place for a cup of tea, but they are gone now and I am spending the rest of my Christmas Eve by myself. As I am writing, a choir of men and women is singing Christmas corals [sic] immediately below my window. Really I never thought that songs could be so beautiful. As their voices floated through my room, my eyes were wet with involuntary tears, and I was just bearly [sic] able to keep from crying. I don’t know why I should feel so; may be it is the rememberance of the jolly days which I spent under your kind roof on similar occasions years ago or it may be the recollection of my happy days in general in America. At any rate, those songs certainly gripped me in a funny and queer way.

Miss Clemons was kind enough to call me up yesterday upon her arrival in London. Due to previous appointment that noon I was very sorry for not being able to have lunch with her as she wished. But we have arranged to have supper on the evening of the 27th when she returns from the country, where she is visiting Miss Majorie. This morning she sent me a Christmas greeting by wire, which I promptly replied. I am looking forward with pleasure to seeing her; it will be so good to see one of my old friends from America!
Minister Sze has been kind enough to write me a letter of introduction to the Manager of the Equitable Trust Company of New York, thus enabling me to deposit my money ($3,500), which you kindly sent me, in some safe place. This amount had been converted into Sterling at the. rate of 4.88-15/16, producing 715. 16. 9 pounds, which sum they have applied for me as follows:

315.16.9. $l,500) have been placed to the credit of a current account in my name, and provided the same do not fall below 100 pounds, they will allow me interest at the rate of per annum subject to change according to monetary conditions prevailing here.

400. 0 0. ($2,000 approximately) have been credited to a fixed deposit account for a period of three months from Dec. 20th, 1929 to 20th March, 1930, at the rate of interest of 4% per annum.

So far I have not touched either deposit excpet [sic] that a debit of 4s.2d has been created in respect of stamps on cheque forms.

I have already sent to you my Christmas Greetings. May I take this opportunity to convey my sincere wish for a Happy, Happy New Year?

                <text>Dear Dr. Stearns;

Two days ago I received a most surprising cable message from my father, giving his consent to my wish to stop studying in London. The wire read as follows: "Agree you discontinue further study - father.” Although I have written to my father two rather "strong" letters, I doubt very much whether the result could have been so good and immediate, had not you lent me your help by writing him yourself. If indeed you have, I wish to express to you, sir, my profoundest gratitude for your kindness. If, however, you have not yet done so, I would beg you not to go into the trouble, as I would not for the world to have a repetition of "Mary's Case”, which caused some misunderstanding on my father's part toward your most sensible advice. But I want to thank you just the same. You have been always very generous in helping me, something, which I will not forget as long as I live. You know, Sir, due to my father’s former persistent attitude and to other disappointments which I met before leaving the States, my first two months in England were extremely miserable. Had not my father made the decision he did, I would have been driven to extreme measures, which I am glad has been avoided by his recent cable.

I am beginning now to look forward to my days here in London with more enthusiasm, which will perhaps make my stay abroad seem shorter. I hope to be able to go home in two years.

With kind regards,

Obediently yours,</text>

                <text>Dear Dr. Stearns:

I haven't written you for quite a while and I think that I ought to report to you how things are faring with me lately. Miss Clemons was in London around Christmas time. She was very kind in calling me up on the phone, hut on account of a previous engagement I was unable to have supper with her as she desired. She had to hurry to the country to see Miss Majorie; so I did not have a chance to meet her at all. I wrote her a letter while she was still in the country but got no reply as yet. I presume she is back now in France or somewhere else on the Continent.

My work is going on smoothly. I am enjoying it as usual. I am still feeling not quite myself in London. And I shudder every time when I think that my father wants me study. Several letters from him came last week. He is all excited and happy over the fact that I was not disappointed for having missed the opportunity to go around the world with Mr. Tong Shao Yi's proposed mission and then return to China. Encouraged by my attitude he is planning out ever more things for me.

Not only did he extend my stay abroad from the original one or two years to three or four, he also said that I should study, and not only that he even went as far as prescribing the courses I should take. Such as shorthand, typewriting, English literature, etc. My father reminds me of the old English family which shaped the course of its sons’ careers in every little detail. I know he means good, but it is really ruining me. I feel awfully unhappy. I asked Minister Sze what I should do, he said you just take a few night courses at the London University; it will please your father. According to my father’s former letters, the Minister has full instructions from him and that he knows and will tell me exactly what to do. But the paradox is that the Minister doesn’t. He thinks as you do that my father wants too much. I wrote my father a letter myself last week, telling	him exactly how I feel, and he can do what he wishes. I am not going to stay abroad all my life and study for	the whole life.

Please, Dr. Stearns, pardon me if I bore you with so many complains every time I write you. I have so many things in my mind but have no one to tell them to. I

I was very glad to have your letter acknowledging the receipt of my little gift. You are not quite correct in saying that I have so quickly adjusted myself to the new environment. I only told you that I would try my best to do so, as indeed I have but failed miserably. London is not a bit more consoling to me now as it was the first day I arrived here. I feel sick all over, and wish that I have never left America.

Minister Sze today instructed me to inform you that he shall be coming to the States at the early part of next month, arriving New York around the 15th of February per S.S. President Harding. You can ascertain his address by telephoning or writing to Mr. K.C. Lee, Hua Chang Trading Co., Woolworth Building, New York City.

                <text>Dear Dr. Stearns,

Many thanks for your letter of May 19th & the information concerning Mary's graduation. I have written my father what you wrote to me; I hope this will satisfy him.

The old Andover hill must be pretty busy today, as, if I do not guess wrongly, the class of 1930 is graduating today. Six years ago the class of 1924 had its commencement on June 13th, Friday, so from that I figure today's is another lucky day for some Andover boys. I certainly wish that I was back in America now.

My work in the Legation runs on as usual. They keep me just busy enough to prevent me from falling into blues. If my father & my luck concurs with my wish, I shall be sailing for China with Mary next year at about this time. Mother is most anxious to have me accompany her back.

With best wishes,
Ever yours, Charlie

P.S. When you go up to the Camp this summer, please do not fail to give my best to \[Iby?\] & write me about the fishing trips. I'd love to have a \[snapoket?\] or two if possible.</text>

Dear Dr. Stearns,

It has been a long while since I wrote you last, but things have not changed much with me except perhaps that I got thinner. I have just been sick with a cold & a horrible headache, which went away a little today. I hope to feel quite all right in a day or two.

I had supper with one of my old Andover cado classmates several days ago & day before yesterday Prof. Bradley of Amherst & also an old Andover man, called me up for supper, but my illness prevented me from seeing him that day.

London weather has lately changed for the better, but it did not make me like it anymore. I went on an excursion try to Hastings sometime ago & had the opportunity to see some English country side for the first time & I think it's rather pretty.

With best regards,
Yours faithfully,

I told Miss Clemons the day we had tea together that I was going to see you off at the station. I am sorry that I did not go.

By this time you must have arrived in Andover already for some time. I trust that the voyage across was a pleasant one. At present I have too little to do in the office to satisfy me. Minister Sze, however, will he here in two days; then I hope there will be more work and action all around.

I am planning to move into the Legation to live in a month’s time. Besides saving a little money, it’s going to be much more convenient for me as well as for the Minister. I hope that it will prove to be less lonely than my present abode.

I mentioned something about asking the Dean of the Yale Nursing School when Mary graduates. You said you would write to the dean. As I don’t know the address, will you be good enough to ask for this information for me?

With kind regards,

Dear Dr. Stearns:

Thank you, Sir, most kindly for your nice letter of April 14th, in which you were good enough to inform me that the piece of jade has reached you in safety. Both Minister Sze and I are glad that you have finally received it in good condition. As you have already notified my father of its receipt, I shall not do so again.

I should feel very much obliged if you would send me the information as to the date of Mary’s graduation. My father made mention of his intention of having Mary and Tom coming home together but did not say when. I for my part really do not know just what he meant, smoothly

My work in the office is coming along and I am no longer as lonesome as before, having now a few friends with whom I dine and have chats every evening. Last Saturday I moved from where I lived when you and Miss Clemons were here to a house located right next street. Here the room is much more elegantly furnished and the rent is also lower. I find this place on the whole very much more respectable, comfortable, and, may I say, wholesome than the former place; although the lack of running water annoys me a great deal. However, comfortable and satisfied as I am, I still don’t seem to be able to adapt myself to London, which never can be like home to me, and I wish all the time that I would go to somewhere else. It’s funny how I am unable to get used to England as I did America.

I know, Sir, you are a thousand times busier than I am, but when you have time, please remember that I shall love to hear from you.

With best regards,

Sincerely yours,</text>

                <text>Dear Dr. Stearns,

I am so sorry for not writing. I hope that you don't think that I have forgotten you.

My work in the Legation is getting along as usual. I am beginning to be a little accustomed to London, which no longer seems so intolerable as before.

I think that I have already told you about the trip I made to Paris in September during the week of vacation which our Minister was good enough to grant me. Paris is a very interesting city but I did not stay long, for there was not a soul in the city whom I knew. Mr. Spencer wrote me that he was spending his summer in France with Mrs. Spencer and asked me to call him up if I ever chanced to be there then I answered his letter a bit late and so missed seeing him.

I have not heard from either Mary or Tom for a long time. A letter from one of my Chinese friends in America told me that Tom is studying in Columbia instead of Yale. The latest news from China which I have recently received may be of interest to you. It concerns some of the old Andover boys who were in the group that came to America between 1920 and 1923. First, my brother Arthur got a boy last August. He is working in the Special Shanghai Municipality Water Works. The pay is not only small but sometimes several months in arrears. He is naturally very much discouraged. Hin Chan, who is the smallest fellow in our group, is now working in a Chinese bank in Hong Kong. He married a Chinese Honolulu girl. Bill and Henry Yuan are both working in Tientsin, but I don’t know where. Tommy, their younger brother, was sent home last year about September; I am afraid he is not doing anything. Frank Lin, according to my latest informant, is no longer in Manchuria with Messrs. Butterfield and Swire Shipping Co. but is now working in Tientsin. I have absolutely no news about Quincy, who, the last I heard from him, was teaching in the Chekiang University, but I know he is no longer there now nor do I know where he is. Of course, I don’t know where Charlie Tsai is and what he is doing. May be you can tell me something about him.

I am doing a lot of skating this winter, having joined a very good Ice Club here near Grosvenor House. It keeps my body fit and my mind from getting bored at things in general.

Hoping to hear from you soon,

With best wishes,</text>
