Admiral H.K.Tu

My dear Admiral Tu:

Your interesting letter of September 18 reached me several days ago and I am delighted to learn from that Kong has reached his home safely. My hope is that he will be able to find a suitable position which he can feel with efficiency and credit. Some regular hours and steady hard work should help the boy immensely in developing proper habits of endeavor and stability of character. Please remember me most surely to him and give him my best wishes for success in meeting the new responsibilities which are to be this.

Yes, the boy did overdraw a bit on his account before he left, but I am glad to say that the amount is small. I am enclosing a statement covering the period since the last statement was rendered to you which will show the exact status of the account. May I also assure you that iwt will not be the least embarrassing to me to allow the account to stand as it is for a time if you desire to do so. In view of the very adverse exchange which you must face in remitting funds from China to this country, it would seem only fair to wait a bit in the hope perfectly free, therefore, to let the account stand as it is, for I shall not worry about it in the least, knowing that in due season it will be properly taken care of.

I think I ought to add a word in regard to Kong’s handling of his funds. In spite of all the difficulties we have encountered in our endeavors to xx Kong’s ambition for intellectual achievements. I must say that I think the boy has done remarkably well in keeping his expenses down. Certainly he has done far better than most of the Chinese for whom I have privileged to set as guardian during recent years. Occasionally he has asked for small amounts for things that perhaps were not absolutely essential, and yet which from the point of view of a large majority of boys of his age have been accepted as a matter of course. When he was about to leave for home, I gave him at his request a small amount to invest in presents for his family and friends, an investment which I felt that you under circumstances would approve. The final remittance of twenty dollars sent by wire to San Francisco was a result of telegram received from him just as he was about to sail from that port, saying that he had lost his passport and needed the extra money in order to carry through this program. I do feel, though, that they boy deserves commendation for the way in which in general he has kept his expenditures down.

I am delighted to hear of your promotion to the Presidency of the Naval College at Fukien. May every success attend your efforts and make this institution a real and helpful factor in the advancement of China. We all think of you these days and with feeling of deepest sympathy and pity as we note the extent and depth of the appalling catastrophe from which you are still suffering. My hope is that out of this affliction may come influences tending to unify and strengthen the nation as a whole in the development of a new and better spirit of altruism and good will.

Again let me assure you of my constant friendship and good will. While I fell that I have been sadly remiss in helping Kong to attain these high ideals which you have always cherished for him and with which I have sympathized so deeply, I feel that I have been more than rewarded for what little I have tried to do in coming thereby in contact with you and profiting as I have so definitely done by that rare spirit of friendly confidence and good will which you have manifested always. I do wish, and I dare hope, that our paths may again cross before we are called upon to surrender our earthly tasks.

With warm personnel regards and every best wish to you and yours. Believe me,

Very sincerely yours.

My dear Admiral Tu:

Your letter of November 20 reached my desk while I was convalescing in a Boston hospital following an unexpected but I am glad to say, very successful operation. My secretary out of consideration for me, held the letter and hence I have not been able to answer it before this. Its receipt, however, was acknowledged at the time and the check you were good enough to clear up Kong’s account was duly depsosited to accomplish that end. I am so sorry that you had to send this at a time when the exchange was so heavily again you, for, as I had already intimated, I should have been perfectly willing to allow the matter to rest until things worked out to better advantage for you.

What you write me of Kong is most interesting, and I do hope that the boy will get down to work and realise that life hasn't anything worth while in it that can be had without labor. Please remember me most warmly to him and assure him that my best wishes will always follow him and that I shall be more than pleased if he should ever feel disposed to write me himself and tell me of his life and progress.

I here thought of you again and again during those recent weeks when the thoughts of the whole world have turned so frequently and so sympathetically to China. You wrote at the time the Manchurian trouble was just developing, and what terrible things have happened since then! It is just impossible for the human mind, in times of calm, at least, to figure what could have happened to the Japanese to drive them on to this orgy of brutality and murder, for at this distance, at least, we can conceive of it in no more charitable way. Some way, I cannot help feeling that out of it all will come a more united China and with that union, the actual strength which has for so long remained potential only, and which we have all recognised once it became centralized and unified would completely change the face of the Orient, if not of the world. Certainly China today enjoys the esteem and respect of the Western world to an extent that he has never known before, though I am not sure, in view of happenings of only recent years, just how valuable that esteem and respect would be regarded in the eyes of an all-seeing God. It is just tragic to think that these things have had to be won through the sheer ability to fight when nations the world have been attempting to tell us, in rather stumbling language to be sure, that the days of force have passed and that strength and security lie with those who are unarmed.

Needless to say, I shall await with the keenest and most eager interest anything that you may care to write me of that has happened and what is in prospect, viewing the situation from the angle from which you would naturally see it. The newspapers here don’t tell half enough, and I imagine that even now we know very little of what has actually happened or why. That the sympathy of the American people has been almost without reservation enthusiastically and generously with China and the Chinese, I need hardly say.

Again my thanks for your letter, and believe me, with warm and friendly regards,

Very sincerely

My dear Mr. Wells:

Thank you for your very kind and explicit letter in regard to my ward Tu. Certainly you and your colleagues at Burdett have done all and more than one had a right to ask in behalf of this difficult boy. That he has not done his part is perfectly clear, and has been clear for several years.

Anyway, the father has at last yielded to my oft-repeated advice that the boy should be sent back to China and has authorized him to return this summer. I am planning to meet him within the next day or two and arrange for the trip, so I imagine that neither you nor I for the future will have to carry this particular worry on top of the sufficient number that must always be borne.

Thanking you again for your more than generous interest and cooperation, believe me,

Very sincerely yours,

My dear Tu:

I have just received a letter from your father in which he tells me that after careful study of the report of the business school and in consideration of recent discussions that we have had about the matter, he has decided that it is best for you to return to China after the closing of the present school term. He has asked me to get in touch with you and arrange for your trip, so I am going to ask if you will not plan to come out here very soon to talk things over with me.

As I am likely to be out of town a good deal of the time from now on, may I suggest that you telephone either my office or house in advance so that we can be sure of hitting on an hour convenient to us both? For the coming week, at least, I shall probably be at home during the XX and I shall also plan to put in an hour or two at the office in the morning for most of the days, at least.

So please let me hear from you, and promptly.

Very sincerely yours

P.S. I am enclosing a note which your father has asked me to forward to you.

Dear Mr. Tu:

I have been following up as closely at possible of late Kong's status and progress at the Burdett Business College, and have been immensely pleased note the generous and helpful cooperation which the college authorities themselves have given me.

This morning into receipt of a report from Long's department head, forwarded to me by the vice-president of the institution, and am taking the liberty of enclosing this report herewith so that you may note for yourself exactly how matters stand at this time. Several weeks ago I was inclined to be distinctly pessimistic in regard to the outcome of Long's work at Burdett. Apparently things have changed a bit for the better, and I can only hope that the change will prove to have been permanent and that the improvement already noted will become more pronounced during the balance of the year. May I quite a comment or two made by Vice-President Wells in sending me this report:

“We are somewhat encouraged. The method devised seems to have brought some result. Mr. Tu has worked in accordance with the regulations devised, and though he found it difficult at first, he adapted himself quite readily as time went on.”

“I have discussed this report with Mr. Tu and have told him that it is being forwarded to you. It is my belief that he is somewhat impressed by his own progress, and if the system is continued, there is likelihood that it might bring the result which is desired. At least, we believe it to be promising enough to warrant a continuance, and we shall proceed in accordance with the same schedule unless you deem it wise that we change.”

With warm personal regards, believe me

Very sincerely yours.

My dear Tu:

l have just received a letter from your father enclosing a draft for six hundred dollars to credit to your account. In order that you may keep posted on your financial status, I am enclosing a copy of the statement which I am sending to your father at this time and which indicates receipts and expenditures to date.
You will note that even with this latest remittance from your father, you have only a small margin left for the immediate future. In his letter to me, your father particularly requests that I should impress upon you the importance of economy at this time in your expenditures, chiefly because of the exceptionally bad situation in the matter of exchange between China and this country. Practically every dollar that your father sends over here now costs him double that amount, so that I know the expense is a mighty serious matter to him at this moment. I told him, however, that 1 thought yon had done very well in keeping your expenses down to date, so that I am not making the above suggestion in any spirit of criticism, but merely to emphasize the necessity, which imagine you yourself appreciate.

I only wish that I felt that you had handled your studies as well as you seem to have handled your money. Certainly this last report that I have received free Burdett is discouraging, as it gives no evidence of the progress and achievement which I had hoped most earnestly might appear by this time. Can’t you stiffen things up a bit in this line?

Ever sincerely yours.
