<text>Dear Mr. Stearns,

We have to-day received a telegram from Miss Mary Sun asking us to cancel her room reservation.

The room, of course, has been reserved since last spring for Miss Sun who has signed and returned the contract, and it will be difficult, if not impossible, to fill the room at this late date.

Moreover, we feel very strongly that if Miss Sun lives outside the college buildings she will lose a most necessary and precious part of college experience. Even more than American students, the foreign students need every possible contact with the other students and with the faculty, and in living in an outside house, where there are no other students, she will be most unfortunately isolated. The other foreign students here live in the dormitories and become a vital and integral part of the student body. It would seem almost better for a foreign student not to enter an American college, then to attend it in so artificial and unusual a way.

Will you please let us know at once what you wish Miss Sun to do, so that we may know what to tell her when she arrives either to-morrow evening or Wednesday morning?

Sincerely,

In accordance with your letter of September 21, I will notify Miss Sun that she is to live in the dormitory.

It happens that all our other foreign students have lived in the dormitories and it seemed to us that Miss Sun would be very isolated if she lived in a private home entirely removed from the college environment. Dear Sir:

In reply to your favor of the 22nd in regard to Mr. Sen Yan Yung, I wish to state that he has had the full course in this school with the following grades:

Algebra to Quadratics C-, A, B+
Algebra through Quadratics, D, D, D.

The latter course he reviewed in the spring term of the following year, to prepare himself for the entrance examinations, with a grade of B. He also carried a four-hour course in Advanced Algebra, with the grades of D+, C- and B. In Geometry, he took in 1905-06 a three-hour course with the grades of C-, C, C- and in the following year, for the spring term only, took a course of two hours, in which emphasis is laid on Originals, with a grade of B-. The time of the first two terms ordinarily given to this subject he devoted to the Solid Geometry, which he passed with a grade of B-. He took no Arithmetic with us, but I assume from his grades in the numerical portion of his Algebra that he is qualified in this subject. I trust that you can grant him admission to your institution on this showing.

Very truly yours.

Cecil Bankcroft

Dear Sir:

In the absence of Principal Stearns your letter of the 11th in regard to a room for W.G.Wu has referred to me. I have not in mind at present just the place for the boy, but he might secure a good room for the fall term at Miss Dore Perry’s, on Salem Street, pending other arrangements. I should not advise his making the contract for the year. I realise that it is important to have our foreign boys planned under the most advantageous circumstances. Mr. Stearns may have some definite plan for the boy of which has not spoken to me.

Very truly yours.

My dear Mr. Cook:
All the rooms in Draper are engaged for the coming year. The rooms in the Clement House and the Brick House, which rent for $30 and $40 a year are reserved for boys who are working their way through the school. Possibly your friend Wu is to be classed with these. Mr. Stearns left no memorandum on this point. I think I suggested in my last letter to you the possibility of a room at Mrs. Batchelder’s at 2 per week.

Mrs. Batchelder is the mother of two of our boys, and rents three or four rooms to our students. Her house is on the rain street in a desirable neighborhood, and the family life is all that could be desired. Mr. Wu could board at one of the regular boarding-houses. The cheapest school dormitory room now available would be $100 a year unfurnished. Two of our Chinese boys have such a room in Bartlet Hall.

Very truly yours,

Mr.Stearns is away on his vacation, so your letter falls into my hands. I do not understand just what you need for Cornell. The College Entrance Board certificate with Mr. Stearns’s signature upon it, if forwarded to Cornell will, I think, count as a sufficient recommendation.

I have written to Dr. Page about your notebook, and hope to hear from him in a way or two. I am sorry there has been any confusion on this matter.
