My dear Mrs. Calhoun:

I have your friendly note of December 28 and shall naturally be pleased to receive Admiral Tsai’s token of good will, to which you refer but which has not yet appeared.

Of all the Chinese with whom it has been my privilege to come into intimate contact, and I have served as American guardian now for some fifty or sixty, I doubt if any have proved so attractive and appealing as these two recent comers from Admiral Tsai’s family. Helen Tsai, particularly, has won the hearts and esteem of every one who has had the privilege to meet her. Both are due to return to their schools this week.

I recall most delightfully the friendly greetings extended to me by you and Mr. Calhoun at the Legation in Peking when I was a visitor in that wonderfully interesting city in the winter of 1913. Dr. Ferguson, I believe, introduced me to you at the time, and I can still recall how my first visit there tended to dispel the natural loneliness and homesickness of one who had wandered for the first time in his life so far afield.

Wishing you all the best blessings of the new year, believe me

Very sincerely yours

                <text>December 20, 1926
Hon. Sao K. Alfred Sze
Chinese Legation Washington, D.C.

My dear Mr. Sze:

Thank you for your letter of December 15th, which reached my desk a day or two ago.

Only a few days before I received from Admiral Tsai a most interesting and instructive letter and the chock for $2,000. to which he refers in his letter to you. This sum has already been deposited to the account of the two children, one-half to each.
As to a fee for my guardianship. if such it may be called, I certainly am unwilling to accept a cent for what I consider a privilege. From the time when one of your predecessors. Sir Liang Chentung, placed several of his wards under my care, I have had the opportunity of serving in this capacity for about fifty Chinese students, and I have never charged anything for what little I have been able to do.

Then the Sun children came to live in my home it became necessary for me to readjust my domestic arrangements to a considerable degree, for with the four Suns and their two friends, Quincy Sheh and Frank Lin, added to my own family, I had a pretty large group on my hands. At that time I undertook to estimate as closely as I could what the added expense of having these youngsters in my house and several of them for a time at my table amounted to, and this expense was duly apportioned among them. So far as I could tell then or have been able to estimate since, the charges covered no more than the additional expense to which I was put by their presence. At vacation periods, when my wards have often returned for their holidays, I have made similar charges when they were with ME for more than brief visits. Whoa they came for two or three days only, as frequently happened, I regularly made no charge.

I am giving you these details only that you may make Admiral Tsai feel comfortable about the arrangement which I am sure he will when he understands that I am glad to treat his children exactly on the same basis as the others who have been with me heretofore and some of whom are still in my charge. In Admiral Tsai's case the task is doubly pleasant because his two children seem especially responsive and amenable to suggestion and advice. Helen is really quite a remarkable girl with a very level head on her shoulders. Her present school principal tells me that she stands out distinctly above all the rest of the girls in the school both in character and ability. Both of the children are with me for the present, or rather are staying at the Phillips Inn next door to my house, since I have no one in charge of the house this year. Helen arrived Saturday and I drove to Lowell this morning to meet her brother Alfred and bring him to Andover. They have not quite decided what to do for the rest of the vacation but will probably visit for a few days at least a Mrs. Nye in South Weymouth, who with her husband passed a number of years in China and claims an acquaintance with Admiral Tsai himself. Mrs. Nye has been very urgent in asking the children to pass their vacations with her, raid from inquiries which I have recently made among friends of mine in the same town I have every reason to believe that this is a good home for the children to enjoy.

The Sun children seem to be getting on well. Arthur is at present employed by the Metropolitan Water Company of this state; Charlie is doing splendidly at Amhest College; Tom has come through his first term as a freshman at Middlebury College, Vermont, with a good record; and Mary whom I saw only two weeks ago when I was at Elmira for a Sunday appears to be in good health and spirits, though she tells me that she finds some of her work, notably Biology, especially hard.

The box with the lacquer vases from Mr. Sun which you were good enough to forward reached ns safely several days ago. I noticed that one of the vases was broken but as the pieces seem to be inside I am still hopeful that the damage can be repaired. I shall write Mr. Sun of course, and thank him personally for the gift, which is deeply appreciated by me; and I will see that the two other pieces for the other members of the household are held until these travelers return.

With holiday greetings and the best of wishes for the coming New Year, believe me

Very sincerely yours,

My dear Mrs. Nye:

Thank you for your good letter received this morning.

I have not yet heard definitely from the Tsai children as to their vacation plans, though, when I last saw them, they were both hoping that they would receive an invitation to pass at least part of their Christmas holiday season with the Chinese Minister and his wife in Washington. If the children themselves do not advise you of their plans, I shall be glad to do so a bit later when I became more familiar with them.

Very sincerely yours.

My dear Helen:

Your good letter of December 13 reached me this morning just as I was on the point of writing to inquire whether all was well with you, I received a good letter from your father also a day or two ago and have just written him a letter in reply, in which I have given him the latest reports I could on you and Alfred and your work and life.

When does your vacation begin, and would it not be well for you to come over here to the Inn when your school closes, even if you are to pass the balk of your vacation elsewhere? This would give us a chance to check up on your plans and meet Alfred also, so that you could work together from that time on. I believe the Chinese Minister has not yet returned to Washington, mid I am wondering whether that will make any difference in your chances of being invited there for the holidays. This morning’s mail brings me an urgent letter from Mrs. Hye, in which she writes enthusiastically of the prospect of having you and Alfred pass the holidays with her in South Weymouth. So you see I am a little in the dark, just as you are, as to what you are actually going to do over the holiday season, and that is why I suggest the trip to Andover first. You can, of course, stay at the Inn as formerly, where you will be well taken care of, as you know.

Your snowshoes have been ordered and ought to have been here before this. I called at Mr. Chase’s today and learned that they had been shipped and might be here any day now. I am sorry that they were not on hand when this recent snow first came, but you ought to have them soon now.

With all good wishes, believe me
Faithfully yours

My dear Mr. Tsai:

Your most interesting and welcome letter of November 8 has been duly received and the check for $2,000.00 enclosed has been credited to the accounts sf the children, one half to each. Early in September Dr. Sze sent me a check for $2,000.00 which was credited in the same way, one half each to the accounts of Alfred and Helen. Dr. Sze wrote me at the time that on his return from abroad in November he would mail ms another check representing the balance left on an additional $2,000.00 which he still hold and from which some minor deductions were to be made covering the expenses of the children while they were with him in Washington. This amount I have not yet received, probably because of Dr. Sze's continued absence abroad, as I understand that he has not yet returned to this country.

It has been my custom to send a statement of receipts and expenditures to the parents concerned every half year. If you desire any other arrangements than this, please do not hesitate to let me know. With the funds now in my hands I should have ample to carry the children through the current school year, even without the sum which Dr. Sze still holds. I confess, though, that it is always a bit difficult to plan on vacation times, for vacations furnish a pretty difficult and sometimes complicated problem. Both Alfred and Helen are hoping that they will be invited to pass the Christmas holidays in Washington with Dr. and Mrs. Sze, but, owing to the former's absence, I am not sure this plan will go through. In the meantime, Mrs. Daniel B. Hye of South Weymouth, Massachusetts, has written Helen on several occasions urging her to come to her home for the holidays. The same invitation was extended for the Thanksgiving recess. This morning's mall brings me a letter from Mr. Bye, pleading eloquently that my approval to the visit be given.

Mrs. Nye always speaks as if she were well acquainted with you. She claims to have been a resident in China for sone ten or fifteen years and seems keenly anxious to have the children make her home their headquarters whenever they feel disposed to do so. Not knowing anything about her, I took occasion to inquire of an old Andover friend residing in South Weymouth and learned that Dr. Nye is a dentist there and that the family are regarded highly. I took this step only as a precaution, since Mrs. Bye was a stranger to me, but I judge from the reports given and from what I earlier expected, there is no reason why the children should not accept Mrs. Hye's invitation when they feel so inclined. If you have any reason to think otherwise, please tell me so frankly.

I have read very carefully what you have had to say about both the children and will try to carry out your instruction fully. We are much more sane and reasonable in our athletic training in these days than used to be the case when you were in this country. Our schools, especially, have systematized the athletic work to an extent that pretty definitely prevents the possibility of excesses. I have already ordered for Helen, at her request, a pair of snowshoes and will see that she has some skates, also, when the skating season comes. I am sure that Mrs. Russell will be very careful not to allow any of her girls to venture on ice until is it absolutely safe

Mrs. Russell is doing, I think, just what you would have her do in directing Helen in her life and work. She is one the old type of mothers who are increasingly hard to find in these modern days, and I should consider myself fortunate to have children of my own come under her influence in the impressionable years of their lives. She is tremendously interested in Helen and extremely fond of her, and Helen herself told me only recently that mr.s Russell read to her and worked with her almost daily on her English, and entirely outside of the school hours and requirements. Mrs. Russell is a woman of unusually fine character and high ideals; so that I am sure that her influence on Helen can be only of the best.

For the brief Thanksgiving recess, the latter part of November, I took Helen up to my brother’s at Mont Vernon, New Hampshire, where she stayed several days with her brother and under the care of my brother and his wife. The children were very happy to be together again after the separation of the few weeks that they had been away at their respective schools. Alfred, too, seems to be getting on well, and both my brother and his wife are very fond of him and speak in the highest terms of his spirit and effort.

Again assuring you of my appreciation of your letter and the pleasure I take in doing what I can for your promising and most delightful children while they are in this country, and with all good wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year, believe me

Very sincerely yours,

My dear Mrs. Russell:

The enclosed letter, which I received yesterday from Helen Tsai's father, will, I am sure, prove of interest to you, and hence I am taking the liberty of sending it for your inspection. Please return it at your convenience.

I have just written Mr. Tsai that I am sure you are carrying out conscientiously his expressed wishes for Helen's education and development and that you have taken a personal interest in Helen of a far greater and more helpful character than could be reasonably expected of any headmistress.

If you have any suggestions to make about the Christmas holidays as a result of your talks with Helen or from remarks she may have made in year presence, please do not hesitate to let me have them. Mrs.Nye is urging vigorously that both Helen and her brother pass the holiday season with her in South Weymouth. Helen has always told me that she hoped to invest most of the vacation in Washington, but, as the Chinese Minister, so far as I know, has not yet returned to this country I am not sure that his wife will be ready to extend the hospitality that had been intended. I am a little puzzled, therefore, to know Just what to plan for these children.

Dear Helen:

Many thanks for year letter advising of the last reports from
My. Bateman with the evidence that he is still interested in trying to locate your missing bag. I very much fear, however, that he will not find it at this late date.

I am just leaving town for Emira, New York, where I hope to see Mary Sun on Sunday. I haven’t seen her since about the time she left Merrimac last June.

Trusting that your work will continue to go well for you and that you will keep in the best of health and spirits, believe me

Very sincerely yours.

My dear Mrs.Nye:

Thank you so much for your letter of November 22 which has just reached me. Doubtless you will have received by this time the letter which I wrote you yesterday and in which I explained the plans and the reasons for the same finally adopted for the Thanksgiving recess by Helen Tsai and her brother.

I am sure that these children, for they are hardly more than than yet, will be only too glad to visit you in the not distant future, and I presume that there may be a good opportunity for this, provided your own plans permit, during the coming Christmas holidays. The plans for that period are still unsettled, though I understand that the Chinese Minister in Washington and his wife desire to have the Tsais with them for part, at least, of that time.
I am very sorry to have missed your recent call and shall hope for better luck the next time you may happen to be in this vicinity.

Very sincerely yours.

Dear Helen:

My brother has telephoned me saying that Alfred would remain
at his school for the Thanksgiving recess and asking me to bring you up on Thanksgiving Day to join with them in the festivities. This I am hoping to do.

If acceptable to you and Mrs. Russell, I shall plan to go over and get you Wednesday afternoon, allowing you to stay at the Phillips Inn that night so that we can get an early start the next morning and give you a chance to have a real visit with your brother before the dinner. I should plan to take you back to Merrimac late that same day.

Please explain the plan to Mrs. Russell and ask if it meets with her full approval.

Very sincerely yours
