Dear Alfred:

I did not realize until your two notes reached me this week that one of the teachers up there was connected with Mr. Sanborn’s summer camp. This particular camp is the one that I would naturally have chosen first for you, and I have this morning talked with Mr. Sanborn to confirm your application for admission. One or two of my Chinese wards have been to the camp in the past, and it commends itself to me as being one of the best and one that will especially meet your needs at this time.

Very sincerely yours.

Mr. Arthur F. Stearns

Thanks for your note about Alfred Tsai: Also the letter from Theodora. The latter I am returning herewith. I have already heard from Theodora about the change of location and will look over my files to see if I have neglected to send any of her last letters to yon. Very likely I have been careless.

As for Alfred Tsai, I am perfectly willing that he should have $5.00 a month just for his own personal extravagances, soda, candy, and what not. From his very evident tendencies to spend freely, however, I know he must be held with a stiff hand and consequently I have asked him to get from you the necessary cash for toilet articles, hair cuts and the rest; though even here I am sure he will bear watching, for I am frank to say that I have not yet been impressed with any excess of frankness and outright honesty on his part. I may misjudge him but I know his sister worries about him and so do I. Her attitude towards mousy is just the reverse and she keeps telling me that he must be held in leash. He is still young enough, so that I think we can put him into shape if we start early and keep at it.

In the meantime, I shall be glad to make regular deposits with you or settle the bills as you send them in, whichever is the more convenient.

Ever yours

                <text>April 21, 1927
My dear Mr. Tsai:

I have received and read with the deepest interest your letter of March 22 which reached me a few days ago. Naturally we are all concerned over the present unrest in China and are hoping that the situation may speedily clear and that the best interests of all may be conserved in the process. A stable and responsible government for the nation would be a wonderful thing for China and for the world.

I note that you do not wish individual receipts for expenditures in the children's behalf sent to you and will act accordingly.

I am also interested in your expressed opinion that you do not desire Helen to go to college but prefer her to take a general course to round out her American education, with special emphasis on English., These instructions of yours I shall endeavor to carry out to the beat of my ability, and shall also try to see that beside emphasizing English herecourses include French, Music, and is sanction in the handling of the typewriter. She is already taking lessons on the piano, and I judge from what Mrs. Hassell tells me is doing as well as the average beginner of her age can be expected to do.

I see no reason why such a course as your have suggested cannot be secured without adding the college coarse as well, and I can readily understand why you would hesitate to take on the extra and heavy expense that the college career would involve. I have found from the experience of recent years that it costs about $2,000.00 per individual to meet the expenses of the American education and the vacation expenses as well. The latter is no small item in these days. This is just double what it used to cost years ago when I first assumed charge of some of the wards of our old friends Sir Chentung Liang Cheng , but with the present prices in Americana change is inevitable. Last year I checked up carefully with Mr. Sze, your Minister in Washington who has had charge of the education of a number of Chinese in this country, and was a good bit relieved to find that he had encountered the same problem and reached a conclusion that fitted in closely with my own. On this basis, therefore, the funds which you have sent me, allowing for interest which will accumulate during the period in question, should cover the expenses of Helen and Alfred for from four to five years, and in that time we should be able to give Helen at least a well rounded education. I assume in Alfred’s case that you will wish him to go on to college or a scientific school, according to the inclinations and abilities he reveals through his preparatory course.

Helen is making excellent progress and is exceedingly ambitious. Alfred seems to famish a different problem. He is disposed to take things a bit easily and to enjoy the social more than the intellectual side of life. We shall evidently have our hands full to induce him to put forth his best efforts along intellectual lines, but I can assure you that we shall do the best in our power to accomplish this. It seems somewhat doubtful whether he will be ready to meet the rather high scholastic requirements of Phillips Academy by this coming year, though I have urged him to lend his best efforts to attain this goal.

The second remittance which you made to me on February 33 and amounting to $6,000.00 gold was duly received, and, as requested, I cabled you at once announcing this fact. Word came back to me later that the cable could not be delivered at the Peking address, and Instructed the company to try Tientsin. Word came back that you could not be found there either, and the last report I had was to the effect that the message had been returned to Peking and a farther attempt made at delivery there. Whether this was successful or not, I can’t say.

I am sending this letter to Helen, as requested, in order that it may be properly addressed and forwarded to you in China. Needless to say I trust that it will reach its destination safely and will find you and your family well and comfortable and relieved, in part at least, of the strain from which you must have suffered during recent months.

With sincerest good wishes to you all, believe me

Very sincerely yours,

Dear Art:
The enclosed letter from Alfred Tsai is characteristic of missives with which he bombs me continuously. Hardly a day goes by that I don receive at least one, and his persistence is getting to be something of a nuisance.

I told Alfred again and again to secure from you what money he requires for needed incidentals or to have the same charged and send me the bill. If you do not wish to make these advances, which I will gladly settle for whenever you render the account, or if you prefer to have me send you a special deposit in advance for the same, just let me know.

Helen Is convinced that Alfred is disposed to spend more than he ought to and to work us all so far as he can. that is why I am unwilling to accede to his numerous requests and must leave the authority with you. Just tell me how you prefer to have it handled, and I will cooperate. Only hold him In leash and don’t let him put it over on you.

Affectionately yours,

My dear Helen:

Your last two letters hare been duly received and the invitation to your party was handed to Scott Calahan, who smilingly tells me that he would like very much to go over, provided he can find a way to get there and back that same night. I suggested that he talk with Mr.Eaton who very likely may wish to go over himself and who I am sure, would be glad to take Calahan along if he does go. I know he will have a good time.

Yes, I have been exceptionally busy during recent days, but, even if I don't write, don’t worry, for I am not going to forget you or where you are.

With all good wishes, believe me

Please consult my brother about your needed clothes. He is better able than I am to tell how such you require at this time. One thing, however, I must make clear, and that is the necessity of keeping your expenditures down within reasonable limits, and chiefly because of the upset conditions in China and the necessary uncertainty which we must face for the future. Until things become more stable over there, you and Helen must do everything in your power to keep year expenses down and so help your father.

Very sincerely yours,

                <text>March 29, 1927

My dear Mr.Tsai:

Your letter of February 22 with the accompanying draft for $6,000.00 reached me this morning. As requested, I am cabling you in acknowledgment of the receipt of the draft, Tsai-Ting-kan Peking. Races. I trust that this message may reach you in spite of the unsettled conditions existing in China at this time.

Helen was in my office when your letter arrived, having come up from the Phillips Inn to see if any nail had come for her. She had just received a letter from you and told me something of its contents, supplementing what you hack written in your letter to me. Needless to say I am greatly distressed over the situation and the keen anxiety which it met occasion you sack my other good friends in China. I hope with all my heart that the situation may speedily improve and a stable and satisfactory government assume control.

What you have written of your anxiety for the future of Peking is especially depressing. The reports from China printed in our American newspapers have as late as this morning even intimated that Peking and Northern China would not be seriously disturbed by the present unrest and active fighting which have now extended to Shanghai. My own feeling underneath has always been that this political fire would never run its full course or be properly subsided until it had covered all of China, and your letter seems to indicate that this is your feeling as well. Our great anxiety here at the moment is lest the situation in Shanghai involve foreign nations, deluding the United States, to an extent which all would apparently gladly avoid if they could. We shall continue to hope and pray for the best.

A word as to the disposition of your funds. I have already deposited $6,000.00 in our local Savings Bank which pays 5% interest on such deposits suck have placed the amount in two accounts, made amt in the one case to myself as agent or Helen Tsai and in the other to myself as agent or Alfred Tsai. This will make the money available to the children should anything happen to me. The balance, or most of It, I shall probably place in the savings department of our local Rational Bank, where 4% interest can be counted on. In the meantime I shall keep on hand for the checking account only as such balance as seems wise and will transfer from the savings account from time to time later as exigencies demand sufficient to keep the checking account at the proper level. I hope this arrangement will prove satisfactory to you.

I note what you say in regard to allowing the children to redirect my letters to you in Chinese. Helen who is close by in Merrimac will be glad to do this for me, I am sure. She and Alfred are here in Andover for a few days at the present time but are leaving this noon to pass the balance of the week with Mrs. Nye in South Weymouth. Saturday and Sunday they will visit Dr. Atwood, President of Clark College in Worcester, Massachusetts. Dr. Atwood has extended this invitation to them and has written that one or two of their Chinese friends in this country will be his guests at the same time. Following this visit, they will both return to Andover for a day or two before resuming their school work at the opening of the spring term.

I am still very eager to learn your decision as to Helen’s future education. that I may plan wisely for her school work next year. In the absence of further word from you on the subject I shall assume that you wish her to go to college later and will plan the further preparatory work accordingly. Whether Alfred will be able to enter Phillips Academy next fall or not must still be regarded as an open question. He doesn’t make nearly such rapid progress in his English as his sister and his Mathematics will need some further strengthening as well. For the summer I hope to arrange camp life where a wholesome and vigorous out-of-door life coupled with a reasonable amount of study can be counted on.
With renewed assurances of esteem and good will and of the privilege I deem it to be able to aid you in guiding your children in their American life and education, believe me.

Very sincerely yours.
