<text>My dear Mr. Lee:

I am inclosing the report of your boy’s work for the final term of his school course. The record while not a high one, is on the whole eminently satisfactory. "Tommy", as we call him, has completed our course and is the first Chinese boy out of many we have had in recent years who has secured his diploma on the basis of our regular requirements, He has asked for no favors or concessions, and has proved his ability to do the full work which we require of all American boys.

We are going to miss the boy sadly from our numbers. Of all the Chinese boys I have dealt with since I have been here, and the number is not small, your boy has proved I think on the whole the most satisfactory all round fellow of any I have met. That is saying a good deal, for most of these boys have measured well up above the average standard of our American youth. Tommy has not been so brilliant in his scholarship as have some of the others, but his general record, conduct, and attitude, have been of the most gratifying kind. He has always responded to suggestion and to advice, has been remarkably frank and open in his dealings with me, and has earned the esteem and good will of his schoolmates and the faculty alike. Personally I have developed a real affection for the boy, and regret more than I can tell you to feel that he is no longer to be one of our school company. My interest in him, however, will not cease, and if at any time in the years to come I can render further assistance to you or to him, I shall deem it a privilege to be given the opportunity to do so.

May I take this opportunity also to express to you and Mrs. Lee my very deep gratitude for the exquisite gift which you recently made to me.It was wholly unexpected and wholly undeserved, and I feel a bit overwhelmed that you should have given me anything, particularly a gift to which I attach such great value as that which you have made. The Chinese workmanship in ivory is remarkable at best, and this piece is one of the finest examples of that work I have ever seen. I shall prize the gift more highly than I can tell you, and shall be glad to feel that it is associated with one whose record at Andover was so uniformly satisfactory, and for whom I had come to entertain such a deep and genuine affection.

Yours very sincerely,

I now beg to introduce to my four children, Arthur, Charles, Thomas and Mary, of whom Mr. M. T. Liang has previously written you. Knowing that you have to turn away large number of applications, from the letter you wrote to Mr. Liang, I hope you will kindly admit these four children who have travelled half the world to you. <text>Dear Dr. Stearns,

I hope that you have received Mr. M. T. Liang’s letter sent you about a week ago, in which he besought on my behalf your favour to undertake the care of my three sons, namely

Arthur K. I. Sun ( age 20 )
Charles K. H. Sun ( " 13 )
Thomas K. J. Sun (" 12 )
and my daughter
Mary S. L. Sun ( " 15 )

during their stay in the States to pursue their studies. In view of your letter to Mr. Liang dated 21st. June last, we were afraid that the postal advice sent to you regarding their arrival at Andover might be too late for you to make adequate arrangements for them to enter suitable schools and to select desirable families for them to live in, therefore I have requested Mr. Liang to cable you to that effect. As I am told by my American and Chinese friends how obliging you have always been and how keenly you wish to see our Chinese boys and girls properly educated, I feel confident That I can rely upon your kind assistance in this matter.

The photos of my children have been sent to you by Mr. Liang. I now enclose the following.

1.	A certificate (copy) of Tsing-hua College Peking issued to Arthur K. I. Sun.
2.	A copy of a certificate issued to Mary S. L. Sun by St. Joseph’s School at Tientsin.
3. 4 lists of books studied or being studied by Arthur K. I . Sun, Charles K.H. Sun and Thomas Z.J. Sun. from which I hope you will be able to form an opinion as to what grades of schools they may enter.

Arthur has just finished his Sophomore year in Tsing-hua College, Peking. After he has completed his high school course in two years or so, he expects to join M.I.T. to learn Civil engineering provided you think that profession will suit him. As regards the other two boys and the girl, it will be many years before they finish their courses in high school and I leave the matter entirely to your decision as to what will suit them best in view of their qualifications.

For these youngsters, I feel that the homes in which they are to live in are to be more carefully considered than the schools. I wish that they would be placed in those thorough Christian homes in which the parents are people of the highest culture and in a position to give my children every advantage that they, as growing boys and girl, ought to have. Be kind enough to arrange with your Christian friends who are willing to receive my Children as their own. My friend, Mr. A.G.. Robinson, a secretary of Young Men Christian Association here who is now in America and knows my children, entertains the same opinion that the home should be the first consideration for the youngsters. He and my other friends, Mr. Pyke and Mr. Stanley, may call upon you in regard to the selection of good Christian homes, but they understand that you being the guardian of my children will have the sole authority to decide the matter. If it is not possible for all four children to go into one family, they may be divided into two groups, Arthur and Charles into one, Thomas and Mary into another.

Arthur has already been baptized. I wish that all of them could be induced to attend Church services regularly and turn to be true Christians. They are also to be constantly advised about their selection of friends.

I am remitting to you through the First National Bank of Boston, Boston $4000.- to defray all expenses of my four children including clothing and other necessaries and some allowance to each for petties. Further remittance will follow. I don't want them to acquire an extravagant habit and they have to be satisfied with what you think it is proper for them. I have given to each of them $300.- to pay for their miscellaneous and travelling expenses from China to Andover, with exception of passage tickets per "Nanking" and they have been ordered to render you an account and to turn the balance on hand to you.

Before closing, I wish to express how glad I feel, through the kind recommendation of Mr. Liang, to have my children placed into your good hands, such as I have been longing to see, but words fail to show my appreciation and gratitude for all the trouble you will take on my behalf. I hope that all of them will prove themselves to be worthy of your good care.

Kindest regards,

Yours sincerely,

                <text>Sir:

Replying to your letter of Sep 10, relative to your letter addressed to Thomas Lee, I very much regret I am unable to give any explanation of Mr Lee’s failure to receive it, except that it might possibly have been out, or not yet received when he called. Being addressed to South College, and the M.A.C. being the only college open at the time, we may have tried to effect delivery there. We are greatly handicapped by students not giving their names at the Post Office on arrival in town, and as we have no correct list of new men, we have to resort to various questionings and carriers who have a similar name, sometimes take a letter bearing other initials, for inquiry. The letter was in the General Delivery case and I personally returned it to you, I fail to understand why your postage did not reach you, I do not recollect seeing it, but am careful to always return any excess. The notice sent for better address, was not the correct form for that purpose, but being out and awaiting supplies from the Department, we have been obliged to use parcel notices, and the space for filling in the amount of postage has been left blank, and presumably crossed out, but with a great many such notices to send, and being short of help during vacation time it is very possible some error was made in the notice.

No clerk who attends the General Delivery window recalls any inquiry for mail for Thomas Lee, and they all recall seeing the letter there.

I can only express my regret that any irregularity has occurred, and trust you will have no cause for future complaint.

Very respectfully

                <text>My dear Mok:

While I was coming back on the train from New York last week, I happened to talk with Mr. Ezra P. Rounds, a teacher at Exeter, who told me that his brother had some conversation with you at a bankers' banquet not long ago in China. When Mr. Rounds described the important position which you now occupy in business circles in your native country, I could hardly believe that you were the boy who once was an undergraduate at Andover, and when Mr. Rounds added that you had told his brother that the two happiest years of your life were spent on Andover Hill, I was very much pleased indeed. You are the kind of alumnus whom we like to turn out.

I assume that you have kept somewhat in touch with recent events at your old school. Dr. Stearns, who resigned two years ago, has definitely retired and is in excellent health at his home in Danvers. Mr. Forbes, who succeeded him as Acting Headmaster, died on March 12, 1933, and I was shortly elected to succeed him. We have tried to carry on the tradition so familiar to you, and I hope that the Academy has not deteriorated in our hands.

This is simply to wish you a very prosperous New Year and to assure you that I shall be glad to hear from you from time to time as to what is going on in your very interesting life.

Cordially yours,</text>
