<text>Dear Dr. Stearns:

As the hour of execution for Sacco and Vanzetti drew near last night, thousands of hearts seemed to stop beating and the entire city moved uneasily. Boston was armed up to the teeth; policemen in countless numbers patrolled the streets. The house of President Stratton of M. I. T. was guarded by four policemen; had any bombs been thrown into that house, I certainly would have heard it, for I slept in the dormitory in a room which is not more than ten feet away from the back yard of the President’s residence. In spite of the heavy precaution taken by the state government small riots and parades took place almost all over Boston and many place in Cambidge [sic]. But when the news arrived that the execution was delayed, things seemed more quiet. Nothing happened today as yet.

I just had my old tennis racket restrung and am playing a lot of tennis for recreation. Except for a few rainy days the Boston weather has been fine and it simply invites one to go out of doors and play. I went to the Boston zoo the other day with some of my Chinese friends, and we had an enjoyable afternoon there. The sight of trees made me almost homesick for Amherst; I think I certainly had enough of summer vacation now and am ready to resume working any time.

I plan to stay in Boston till the beginning of September, then I shall return to Amherst to room in my former landlady’s house to wait for the college’s reopening. But I shall need a little more money to get through the vacation; so if you please, I would like to have about one hundred dollars.

Faithfully yours,</text>

Dear Dr. Stearns,

It has been a long while since I wrote you last, but things have not changed much with me except perhaps that I got thinner. I have just been sick with a cold & a horrible headache, which went away a little today. I hope to feel quite all right in a day or two.

I had supper with one of my old Andover cado classmates several days ago & day before yesterday Prof. Bradley of Amherst & also an old Andover man, called me up for supper, but my illness prevented me from seeing him that day.

London weather has lately changed for the better, but it did not make me like it anymore. I went on an excursion try to Hastings sometime ago & had the opportunity to see some English country side for the first time & I think it's rather pretty.

With best regards,
Yours faithfully,

Many thanks for your letter of May 19th & the information concerning Mary's graduation. I have written my father what you wrote to me; I hope this will satisfy him.

The old Andover hill must be pretty busy today, as, if I do not guess wrongly, the class of 1930 is graduating today. Six years ago the class of 1924 had its commencement on June 13th, Friday, so from that I figure today's is another lucky day for some Andover boys. I certainly wish that I was back in America now.

My work in the Legation runs on as usual. They keep me just busy enough to prevent me from falling into blues. If my father & my luck concurs with my wish, I shall be sailing for China with Mary next year at about this time. Mother is most anxious to have me accompany her back.

With best wishes,
Ever yours, Charlie

P.S. When you go up to the Camp this summer, please do not fail to give my best to \[Iby?\] & write me about the fishing trips. I'd love to have a \[snapoket?\] or two if possible.</text>

Dear Dr. Stearns:

Thank you, Sir, most kindly for your nice letter of April 14th, in which you were good enough to inform me that the piece of jade has reached you in safety. Both Minister Sze and I are glad that you have finally received it in good condition. As you have already notified my father of its receipt, I shall not do so again.

I should feel very much obliged if you would send me the information as to the date of Mary’s graduation. My father made mention of his intention of having Mary and Tom coming home together but did not say when. I for my part really do not know just what he meant, smoothly

My work in the office is coming along and I am no longer as lonesome as before, having now a few friends with whom I dine and have chats every evening. Last Saturday I moved from where I lived when you and Miss Clemons were here to a house located right next street. Here the room is much more elegantly furnished and the rent is also lower. I find this place on the whole very much more respectable, comfortable, and, may I say, wholesome than the former place; although the lack of running water annoys me a great deal. However, comfortable and satisfied as I am, I still don’t seem to be able to adapt myself to London, which never can be like home to me, and I wish all the time that I would go to somewhere else. It’s funny how I am unable to get used to England as I did America.

I know, Sir, you are a thousand times busier than I am, but when you have time, please remember that I shall love to hear from you.

With best regards,

Sincerely yours,</text>

You must have received my last letter by this time. Minister Sze, who has been in the United States for the last four weeks, is now back again in England. During his sojourn in New York, he managed to get in touch with Charlie Stearns, to whom he has entrusted that piece of jade from my father. He wishes me to inquire whether it has safely reached you.

I am working here as usual, being more usually busy these two weeks in helping Dr. Sze to clear his desk of the work accumulated during his absence. Last week I had the good fortune of attending the Court Levee with Minister Sze, when I saw the King of England. The Palace interior was very beautiful and when adorn by the dazzling uniforms of the various officers and diplomats, it presented sight hard to forget.

I told Miss Clemons the day we had tea together that I was going to see you off at the station. I am sorry that I did not go.

By this time you must have arrived in Andover already for some time. I trust that the voyage across was a pleasant one. At present I have too little to do in the office to satisfy me. Minister Sze, however, will he here in two days; then I hope there will be more work and action all around.

I am planning to move into the Legation to live in a month’s time. Besides saving a little money, it’s going to be much more convenient for me as well as for the Minister. I hope that it will prove to be less lonely than my present abode.

I mentioned something about asking the Dean of the Yale Nursing School when Mary graduates. You said you would write to the dean. As I don’t know the address, will you be good enough to ask for this information for me?

                <text>Dear Dr. Stearns;

Two days ago I received a most surprising cable message from my father, giving his consent to my wish to stop studying in London. The wire read as follows: "Agree you discontinue further study - father.” Although I have written to my father two rather "strong" letters, I doubt very much whether the result could have been so good and immediate, had not you lent me your help by writing him yourself. If indeed you have, I wish to express to you, sir, my profoundest gratitude for your kindness. If, however, you have not yet done so, I would beg you not to go into the trouble, as I would not for the world to have a repetition of "Mary's Case”, which caused some misunderstanding on my father's part toward your most sensible advice. But I want to thank you just the same. You have been always very generous in helping me, something, which I will not forget as long as I live. You know, Sir, due to my father’s former persistent attitude and to other disappointments which I met before leaving the States, my first two months in England were extremely miserable. Had not my father made the decision he did, I would have been driven to extreme measures, which I am glad has been avoided by his recent cable.

I am beginning now to look forward to my days here in London with more enthusiasm, which will perhaps make my stay abroad seem shorter. I hope to be able to go home in two years.

With kind regards,

Obediently yours,</text>
