The occasion for this action was a single act of flat disobedience persisted in, and his failure to make any effort to right the matter when advised to do so. The facts are as follows— During the evening study hour Sun became annoyed at some acts of a boy near him (which escaped the teacher’s notice) and commanded his annoyer to stop, in a loud, emphatic tone. This of course made a sensation and the master, Mr. Libbey, directed Sun to leave the room. Sun proceeded to state that he liked the seat where he was and would stay. The direction was repeated but Sun did not obey though the serious nature of his action was indicated to him. Personally I wish he had been ejected- but he was not. The boy has worked very faithfully if not very successfully, and his general conduct has been good. These facts will enter into the final disposition of the case as will the natural allowance to be made for the Chinese temperament but no student can disregard a proper command from a master without getting radical treatment at once— a fact which Sun has never fully appreciated and should get clearly in mind now. His room has been closed and turned over to the Board of Health. His room-mate and one or two others who were closest to him have been given small preventive doses of antitoxin by Dr. Randolph Hurd, the school physician. Lun Cho Sun has been, of course, slightly exposed. Will you let me know by return mail or by wire whether you desire that a small dose of antitoxin be given him at once or not. It is evident that Ungvary will need to adjust himself to the situation and be willing to pay the price for the prize he is seeking. At the same time I sympathize with him. I went through his experience myself. I know what it means to give up a life of relative affluence for one of poverty. Mr. Ungvary had a salary of about $1200.00 a year, all of which he spent in taking care of himself. As you know I sent him to Mount Hermon. The drudgery there became too much for him. In a moment of despair he left and went to Philadelphia and resumed a business occupation, intending to get together some money and then go back. He soon saw, however, that he had not the time to pursue that course and so he came to me again. I thought that perhaps if I sent him to Andover the better spirit of things there would sustain him. He is much more enthusiastic over Andover, than he was at Mt. Hermon. Nevertheless he is at the same time under the disadvantage of being associated with boys, who have money to spend. I do not think he means to make himself an object of charity. His idea is to borrow money, which he no doubt will be able to pay. [no signature – letterhead of Rev. Charles S. MacFarland, Ph.D.] He does not sufficiently [sic] realize that if he take-up the ministry, he is entirely unlikely to be able to pay it back. I have said nothing to him about this matter. I have written him that at the present moment I am unable to obtain further loans, owing to the pressure at the present time resting on me. The fact is that I have too many cases of this kind on my hands. I wrote him, however, to hold on and that I believed we could pull the matter through. He told me when here that the work in the dining hall, sometimes became almost unbearable. That it absolutely took away his own appetite and unfitted him for his work. At that time he had in mind some schemes, which he hoped to develope [sic] for making some money in a different way. I wonder if his aquipment [sic]and ability might not be used in some better way than waiting in the dining hall. As I understand it he is a good stenographer. I had thought that possibly he might get some work of that kind to do. He also hoped to increase his tutoring. It is a very hard matter concerning which to write him a letter that he would not misunderstand, If I could see him I might be able to straighten him out. May I suggest that you have a frank talk with him. I know that you can do it in just the right way and I would recommend that you have such a talk with him and have the matter out with him. I think perhaps if you can get him to the point of setting his teeth, he has grit enough to carry the thing through. I suggest this because a personal talk with him will do more than anything, which I can write him. Later on if the financial situation should get better I might be able to get hold of some man to stand behind him. As it is my constituency here is involved very deeply in the financial situation and I do not dare to press upon my men other than the most urgent cases of this kind. Stearns, Andover, Mass. Dear Mr. Stearns, You will recall that upon my introduction John J. Ungvary had some conference with you regarding the matter of entering Andover. Immediately after seeing you he went to Mount Hermon and remained there until about the first of May. He was then obliged to leave because his funds gave out and he was unable to obtain any work there to help him along. He has been serving for a little while as private secretary to the President of Lehigh University. He is now doing some commercial work in Philadelphia. He is desirous, however, of taking up his plans again in September and of entering Andover at that time if possible. He seems to be in doubt as to what he can count upon if he goes to Andover. He tells me that he understood from you that he would get a scholarship and that there would be a chance for him to work for his board. What he now desires is to know definitely what he might be able to do. My impression is that he is a very good secretary and stenographer. He has a large fund of general intelligence which is a good deal beyond his academic acquirements. As I understand it his feeling is that he would like to come to Andover if there was a fair chance of getting along without running seriously into debt. I am desirous that he should put this matter through if it can be done. He has placed himself in my hands and I should be greatly obliged if you would write me what you could definitely assure in the matter, I presume you are also in communication with Charles A. Anderson, who is also now at Lt. Hermon. He is a remarkably promising fellow. So far as such men are concerned, Mt .Hermon does not seem to be adequate. They have so many applicants there that apparently they let men come and go without taking any personal interest in them, I think that if they had grasped Mr. Ungvary’s situation it might have been arranged so that he might have remained there through the summer semester. Some funds which had been promised him did not materialize. They let him go without attempting to tide him over at all. I shall greatly appreciate it if you will let me know just what could be done for Mr. Ungvary in September. I think he will have just about money enough to get into Andover. Later on, if necessary, he could probably borrow. I think, however, it would be necessary to find some work for him at the start. His case is an interesting one. He is a Hungarian and the son of a saloon-keeper. He is now twenty three years of age, and occupies a responsible position as private secretary to one of the directors of The Yale and Towne Lock Co., of Stamford. He is an experienced stenographer. His education has pursued a somewhat erratic course. He left school before reaching High School. He has however, since that time, qualified himself in large measure by his own study. He attended a Business School for a while. He also put in a hard year at the preparatory school at Heidelberg University in Ohio. He took one full year of Latin and one half a year of Greek. In English and history I judge he stands fairly well. The main point on which he would fall short is mathematics. In addition to his work at the preparatory school he has also been tutored somewhat. His plan is to prepare to enter Yale. He wishes ultimately to enter the ministry in order to do work among the Hungarian people. He is a good speaker and a man of strong personality. The matter I now have in hand is to get him prepared to enter Yale. He would need to pursue a somewhat irregular course. It seems to me he ought to be able to get ready for Yale in about two years, if he could do his work in special ways. I wish that he might go to Andover Academy, but I do not know to what extent you can care for such special students. Perhaps it may be necessary for him to go to some other school, like Northfield, for his first year, and then take a second year at Andover. He has resigned his business position and is ready to begin the first of January. He has about three hundred dollars in cash. I think that his is a case well worthy of attention. May I submit the matter to you and receive your early reply as to what you could do for him and also an estimate of the expense per year. If so I shall be very grateful.
