My dear Dr. Stearns,

It was with the keenest disappointment that I learned from Miss Greenwood that you have not as yet fully recovered from your recent operation. I most sincerely hope that the time this letter reaches you, you have regained your lost vigor.

The process of recovery must necessarily be a slow one, but I am sure that with your strong constitution there is every chance in the world to go about as usual shortly. The distance between us makes it impossible for me to do anything else except to express my hopes and the assurance that myself and all my children are thinking and wishing for you.

The fact that you are not very strong as yet, as Miss Greenwood informed me, prompted to make this note one from the family so as to lessen the amount of energy to be used to read a letter from each one of us. Nevertheless, however short and community-like this letter might be, it does not lessen our hopes for your immediate recovery.

With best wishes from all

Tommie

P.S.-Knowing that you shall busy when you return to Andover, please do not try to answer this letter.</text>

Your good letter of the 8th of March acknowledging my letter of January 30 to Dr. Stearns was received by me, and hereby I beg to acknowledge its receipt. May I take this opportunity to express my appreciation to you for your information of Dr. Stearns’ lingering indisposition as a result of his operation. My children and myself are keenly anxious and hoping that the next letter will bring us the good news of his complete recovery.

Minister Sze who has been visiting Tientsin during the past five weeks, will leave here tomorrow for Shanghai. I understand that he will sail from Shanghai toward the end of August for his new post in London via the United States. He has kindly consented to take to you for me a piece of carved white jade of the Sung Period, 960-1276, which I beg you to accept from me and my family as a slight token of our sincere gratitude for all your kindness to our children. We owe you a debt which we cannot adequately repay. We all highly appreciate the guidance and advice that you have been good enough to give to them at all times.

I am much pleased with the progress that Mary and Tommy are making. It is indeed very fortunate that Charlie has been appointed to be attached to Mr. Tong Shao-Yi’s Mission.

With our best regards,

I appreciate very much your good letter of the 30th September and am proud that Charlie has earned such high praise from you. In my letter to you of the 23rd. September I asked you to be so kind as to give Charlie a sum in sterling for use in London, in addition to paying his passage to London. Now I have just received your accounts for my three children for the period October 1928 to October 1929 together with a covering-letter dated 8th October from your secretary. I see that Charlie’s account shows a credit balance of over four thousand dollars. After paying his passage to London please be so good as to give Charlie a sterling draft in round figures approximately the amount standing to his credit after paying expenses up to the time he leaves America.

With my best wishes and continued appreciation of your kindness, I remain,

Very sincerely yours,</text>

                <text>My dear Dr. Stearns,

My telegram to you about Charlie's appointment to our London Legation would confirm what I wrote in my last letter to you. He is very lucky to get this position in liue [sic]with his wishes and training and at such an early stage when really his preparation work for this position is not as far advanced as he himself would like it to be. So as not to waste his time and also to get in as much more helpful study as possible, I wish him to continue at Columbia until Dr. Sze sends for him. As I think I mentioned this will be about Christmas, but he will get orders direct from Dr. Sze as to the time he wants him in London. In my last letter I asked you to be so kind as to provide Charlie with the necessary funds when he leaves for London and if you have a good credit balance you might give him a sum in Sterling (in addition to his passage-money) enough for his use for expenses etc. when he gets to London. In this great opportunity that has come to Charlie I trust he will take advantage of it, and any further counsel and wise advice you can give him will be appreciated by me and should prove of added help as he steps out into his new venture and profession.

With regard to Tommy he seems to be tackling his study at Middlebury with energy and zeal and I am hoping he continues to make progress in his special line of Govern¬ment administration. Tommy mentions the possibility of Syracuse after he graduates from Middlebury, but it is just a passing mention, and he says you had spoken of Harvard which seems to me much better. Tommy is not inclined to Columbia as he says there are too many distractions on account of its being near a big center of population. However, my own opinion strongly favors Harvard or a University of a similar kind.

Mary’s letters to me are of the most pleasant nature. She speaks of liking her work, and there is hardly a complaint of any kind, all of which points to her being interested in her work and enjoying it.

So all three of my children appear to be getting along nicely and that they are doing so well is the result of all the care and thought you have so freely given to them and for which I can never thank you enough.

With best wishes,

Yours very sincerely, </text>

I thank you most cordially for your good letters of June 27th. and July 18th. and for all the kind assistance you have given. I cabled you as follows- "Tell Charlie mission temporarily postponed. Continue study diplomacy at Columbia as you two decided”. Dr. Tong’s mission has been postponed, end so far as we can see it is an indefinite postponement without date and in consequence the whole matter is uncertain.

As you know Dr. Sze is going as our Minister to London and I am trying to arrange that Charlie be appointed as one of his attaches on his London staff. I shall know definitely of this in the not too distant future. I thought a change of this kind would be good for Charlie and help him to get over his disappoint-ment and he would be able to continue his studies in London while at the same time he would have practical training in our Legation under Dr. Sze.

Although Charlie’s English is quite good I suggest that if he has any spare time he might continue his studies in higher English which he could continue in London. To be of service in diplomatic work requires an excellent command of the English language and literature.

If I am successful in securing this position for Charlie he would not require to go to London until about Christmas time, and Dr. Sze would write him direct as to the date of his leaving America. When this time arrives I shall be indebted to you if you will be so kind as to provide Charlie with the necessary money for travelling and something extra for his use when he arrives in London. In case our luck is against us and we should fail in getting Charlie appointed to the London Legation I would beg of you to use your influence with him to complete his studies in America.
I am exceedingly sorry to have again to trespass on your kindness in this matter, and I wish to assure you how much I value your help both in this matter and in all you are doing for me and my children.

I am sending you to-day a night letter by radio, reading as follows;

Stearns, Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass, Please tell Charlie wait America arrival my letter, bringing him good news. Sun

May I confide to you confidentially the reason that led me to sending you this wireless message? Dr. Tong Shao Yi our veteran statesmen[sic] and ex-Premier, is soon to come to the States on a special mission. He and I have been lifelong friends. He has kindly consented to allow Charlie to be attached to his mission, I thought that such an opportunity does not come often. The experience that he will receive, will be the most invaluable. While I cannot forecast how long the mission will remain in America, I am sure that it will not delay Charlie's return home indefinitely.

This appointment may open for Charlie a way to a fine career. Upon receipt of your kind letter of April 24th and my reply to you on the 7th Inst, I have decided to let Charlie return to China. But, upon receiving this appointment for Charlie, I am sure that you will approve of the change, resulting in my dispatching the night letter. Please give Charlie sum of money for his expenses during the summer and also such money for his outfit etc. after consulting with certain member of the mission, I am sending a letter to Charlie to your care I would feel greatly it if you will kindly forward to him.

With kindest regards,

<text>My dear Dr. Stearns, Following on my letter of the 11th. inst. I have to-day sent you the following cable—-

"Please tell Charlie take summer course general secretarial work including shorthand typewriting best regards, Sun".

As I have already written you Charlie is to be attached to Dr. Tong Shao-Yi’s mission. After consultation with friends here they all agreed that a general secretarial course including shorthand and typewriting would be essential to Charlie in his coming work. As Dr. Tong will not be in America for a few months it will give Charlie this spare time to take a summer course as outlined and so fit him for his new work. It will be a wonderful opportunity for Charlie and I am hoping he will take full advantage of all it offers in experience and training.

I don't know what I would do without your valuable assistance, not only in this new development in Charlie's future but in all you have done again and again for the good of my children, and I wish again to express my most sincere thanks to you.

I remain,

                <text>Dear Dr. Stearns,

I wish to thank you for your very kind letter of April 24th. I have already written you about Charlie, and you would see from my letter that my only desire in wishing that Charlie take a post-graduate course was to fit him better to face the keen struggle for existence in China. I feel that unless Charlie is specially qualified along some line he may find it very hard for him to fit into anything here. But, as I said in my letter, if he is bent on coming home I would like that you advance him the money as you kindly did when Arthur returned.

Allow me to express to you my heartfelt thanks for all you say about Charlie. I am greatly encouraged and hope that he will live up to these high expectations in his future life and work.

Concerning China and her development, it takes time to make the adjustments to suit the new conditions, I am hopeful that the threatened fighting may be avoided. There is certainly room for constructive effort in this land, and I sincerely join you in the hope that in this the Andover boys will have & share.

With cordial good wishes， </text>
