<text>My dear Mr. Sun:

Through Dr. Stearns I have heard of your coming graduation at Technology, and have been putting out one or two lines in the hopes that I might find some position in your chosen field of sanitary engineering to start you off after you have left the institute.

My friend, Mr. I.E. Moultrop of Boston has made the suggestion that you call on two concerns; the first one, Metcalf & Eddy, and the second Weston & Sampson, both located at 14 Beacon Street, Boston,
Mr. Moultrop is acquainted with the senior partners of both of these firms and has talked with both Mr. Eddy and Mr. Weston. I would suggest, therefore, that you write letters; one to Mr. Eddy and one to Mr. Weston, using Mr. Moultrop’s name, asking for an appointment, which I believe, from what Mr. Moultrop has told me, will be granted; and I feel quite sure that these interviews will be very helpful to you.

I had been in hope, prior to this time, to meet you myself, but business down here has kept me away from Boston.

I wish you every possible success with your interviews, and will be glad to hear what may be the result.

Sincerely yours,

                <text>My dear Dr. Stearns:

I feel quite sure that you will be interested in the attached copy of letter I have written to young Sun.
Through Mr. Edgar, President of the Boston Illuminating Company, and in turn through Mr. Moultrop, a friend of mine and their consulting engineer, approaches have been made to Messrs. Metcalf & Eddy and Messrs. Weston & Sampson, both of them very important firms in Boston, which have resulted in the invitation for young Sun to write them for an appointment. I do not doubt he will be able to make some connection with the one or the other.

In the course of my procedures in this matter, I have received some very good advice from a fellow college-mate by the name of Thaddeus Merriman, who is the son of Mansfield Merriman, past well known hydraulic engineer, and who, by the way, it was my pleasure to have as instructor at Lehigh University. This advice from Mr. Moultrop all checks up with Mr. Merriman’s suggestions.

I am sure looking forward to young Sun’s making a fine impression on both Mr. Eddy and Mr. Weston.

With sincere regards, -

Cordially yours,

                <text>My dear Mr. Murray:

On my return to Andover this morning I find your letter of November 5 with the copy of the exceedingly generous letter you have written Arthur Sun. Certainly you have proved yourself a wonderful friend to a
stranger and he and I both appreciate it very very deeply.

A few days ago Sun accepted a position with the Metropolitan District Commission. Naturally he does not feel, nor do I, that he should throw over this position without at least explaining frankly to his present employer the situation and securing full and friendly approval of the step. My impression is that his present boss would understand perfectly and give the boy his benediction upon making the change, assuming, of course, that a position along the lines suggested by you should actually materialize. The fact is that the job he has taken is, I believe, that of a lineman only and in work that is somewhat different from what he hopes to follow as a sanitary engineer in his home country later. I am writing Sun, therefore, to see is present employer at once and state the case frankly and fully to him; then if the desired approval is forthcoming, to look into the other possibilities suggested by you.

I hope that in doing this I am playing fair with all concerned. Anyway, I am more grateful to you than I can express for the extremely friendly and effective way in which you have undertaken to help out this foreigner and stranger.

The year seems to be starting off pretty well for your youngsters. It was a delight to be able to release John from probation, a release which he certainly earned. William, Jr., also appears to be making a good start, even though he did come out a few hours behind on the first rating. His teachers all speak of his good spirit, and are also inclined to think that the earlier conditions were due, in good part at least, to illness, and hence are not very likely to appear again on the slate.

Very sincerely yours,

                <text>Dear Arthur:

Your letter of November 7 has just reached me, and the same mail brought me also a letter from Mr. Murray in which he encloses a copy of the letter which he wrote you and which you were good enough to send for my inspection. I am returning the original herewith.

Mr. Murray has been extremely kind and friendly and evidently the openings which he seems to have found for you are likely to prove more attractive than the position you have already accepted. Under the circumstances you met, of course, act with caution and in a perfectly frank and straightforward may if you are to play the not only fairly but to your own advantage. Naturally you can’t throw over impulsively a position once accepted in order to take a better one. On the other hand, there may be a perfectly honorable way out.
My advice is to go frankly to your present employer and show him Mr. Murray’s letter and explain that I had written Mr. Murray long before you accepted your present position and that these possible openings are the result of efforts made by him in your behalf since that time and before the position you now hold opened up. Ask him in a perfectly frank way whether he would consider that it would be proper and in every way fair to him for you to look into these positions a little further and in the way suggested by Mr. Murray, in the belief that they may offer you work along the lines of your special Technology training and the work which you expect to follow when you return to China. Make it clear that you would not for a minute think of severing the present connection unless you should have the full and hearty approval of your employer, and then only for the reasons mentioned above.

I am clear that such an approach would not be misinterpreted and that you would not be criticized for making it. Further, Mr. Murray’s reputation as an engineer is so high that no one could blame you for desiring to follow up one openly suggested by him. Very possibly these suggestions may not offer anything better than you now have. They do seem, however, to have possibilities which I feel should be investigated, and that is why I have proposed a line of action such as that outlined above.

In the meantime, if you care to run out to Andover some evening, I shall be delighted to talk matters over with you in person. So far as I know, I shall be here all of this week.

Faithfully yours,

                <text>My dear Dr. Stearns:

I was most interested to have your letter of November 9th this morning.

The pleasure of giving any worthy youngster a start, as you know yourself, carries its own compensation. For a Chinese boy to come over here and graduate at Technology means that he has something in him; and in the vernacular of the second American language, I’ve got my hat off to him.”

I have often told my own sons, John and Bill they have all the advantage, and while I am always glad to render any help I can, that help will be withdrawn unless I have a very positive manifest of their first willingness to help themselves. They know that they have got to get through Andover on their own recognizance, and I truly believe that they realize and appreciate that fact - but I am degressing [sic].

When I talked with my friend, Thaddeus Merriman about Sun, he seemed to think that the wiser plan would be for Sun not to get a position with an operating organization for the reason that he would be assigned to a very specific and minor line of work, which might last for some time; but rather to get associated with some well recognized consulting firm of sanitary engineers, where the diversity of work would give him a broader experience of planning, designing, and with the undoubted opportunity of observing the fruition of these plans and designs. He expressed the same feeling that I had, that such a position would combine a sort of post graduate course with practical experience over a diversified field, and better fit him for future responsible work along these lines in his own country.

I believe, too, that the step he has made is very constructive, since now holding an actual position with the Metropolitan District Commission, it puts him in a stronger position to approach Messrs. Metcalf & Eddy and Messrs. Weston & Sampson for his conference. Undoubtedly the Metropolitan District Commission will be glad to assist in any step along these lines that he may make.

I wrote my friend, Dr. D.C. Jackson who is head of the department of electrical engineering at Technology telling him about Sun, and I have had a letter from him saying that he wants to meet this young man himself, and is arranging to give him an appointment.

As I have written you before, I am very much looking forward to meeting him myself, for you have gotten me warmed up on him, and when once that sort of thing happens, I find it difficult to cool off.

I am afraid I am in dutch with the boys on not going up to see the Andover-Exeter game next Saturday, but I have to be in Washington on that day. However, it is not necessary for me to say whom I am betting on.

Very sincerely yours,

Have you thought at all of your plans for the coming Christmas holidays, and, if so, please let me know what you are thinking about. Mary talks of staying in Elmira, and Arthur, no doubt, will have to	be busy with his new job, with perhaps the	exception of	Christmas Day. It doesn't seem likely, therefore, that there will be very	much chance for you four to get together, though perhaps we can work something out. Please let me hear from you, anyway.
