If you have already sent to Tuan a letter by mail stating your agreement to take him into your school next September, I think that there is nothing more that you can do for him to help him to get admitted to this country. You might write a letter to the young man addressed to the steamer at Seattle telling him that there is no necessity of your writing to the Immigration Authorities but in case he should have trouble of getting admitted to this country he should report to the Chinese Consul at Seattle and solicit his help. Last Wednesday I saw Dr Lent of Elmira College. I mentioned to him about Mary Sun. He gave me the impression that he would take her into the college next month and would not be very exacting as to the Entrance requirements. Of course, Mary has to take the examinations and I think it better if she be not informed of my conversation with Dr Lent. Our little household is getting along fairly well; besides doing our cooking, sweeping, etc. we find time enough to enjoy ourselves with games, exercises, and study. The air here is good too, and I am none too sorry for having left Boston. As you know the great exposition is now in full swing in Philadelphia, and this year the annual Chinese Student Conference is also going to be held in the same city. I am very desirous both to see the exposition and to be at the Conference, which never yet have I attended before; so I venture to ask your permission concerning both. If your opinion be in the affirmative, I shall go to Philadelphia on the 4th of September, first to visite a few friends of mine, then to see the exposition, and lastly to attend our Conference which ends on the 15th, giving me ample time to reach College, scheduled to open on the 23rd. I shall not see you again before returning Amherst; so I will say "good-bye" to you through this letter and my best wishes to Miss Clemons when she returns to the States. At the opening of my college this coming fall, I shall have to meet one or two heavy bills; expense for my room is two hundred and fifty dollars and the first payment of tuition, which is due immediately at the commencement of the academic year, is one hundred and forty dollars, the total being two hundred and fifty dollars. These two and other innumerable, little expenses, quite necessary at that time of the year, will bring the amount to a sum between five and four dollars, which, of course, will cover also my expenses for the rest of the term until Christmas.
