Miss Mary Sun
The Whittier School
Merrimac,Mass

Dear Mary:

Thank you for your note.

By all means make Mamie Sze a white flannel coat, if she wants it and you can spare the time to do it. I do not think you ought to attempt anything outside of your school work until the current term is over anyway.

If you want to work it in later, well and good. The best way, I think, would be for you to order the flannel from Boston and have the bill sent to me. Mrs. Russell will be glad to guide you in the matter. I am sure.

I don't quite know what to say about your summer. June 3rd is a very early date to get through school, and, as you know, that will be the busiest time of the year here, for our own commencement will be only two weeks ahead. I am inclined to think that it would be well for you to go on at once to Elmira, if we find the right place, and get started on your work out there. Possibly, too, Mrs. Russell would be willing to keep you two or three weeks longer at Merrimac. Anyway, we can settle this a bit later.

I am sending you in advance the allowance for June so that you will have something to cover the incidentals to which you refer. Please find out from Mrs. Russell what you ought to give the servants in tips, for there is a wide difference of opinion in natters of this kind and it is foolish for you to overdo the thing, though perfectly proper that you should do what is right

Ever sincerely yours,</text>

I am enclosing herewith the statements covering Mary Sun's work and which have just been sent me by the Principal of the Whittier School, where Mary is at resent studying. These will probably give you a fair idea of the character and extent of the work still needed and to be provided for during the summer months to enable Mary to enter Elmira College in the fall as well prepared as practicable to meet the requirements of your institution;

My dear Mrs. Russell:

Thank you heartily for sending me the information about Mary’s work at Abbot and with you. This is just the material that Elmira College desires, and I am forwardly it to the College this morning.

Only yesterday I received a most gratifying letter from the President of Elmira, acknowledging the receipt of my formal application for Mary’s admission next fall and telling me that they were ready to take her in on my recommendation, even though she might fall to pass all the regular entrance tests. I am not sure that it is rise to mention this to Mary for the present, for my understanding with the College authorities is that Mary will continue her work during the summer so as to bring herself as near as possible by September to the standards regularly imposed on the girls who enter.

Mary writes me that her work with you ends June 3, and I am a bit at a loss to know just what arrangements to make for her for the rest of June. My own house and time will be terribly crowded during those closing days of the school year here, and it will be difficulty to provide for Mary under these circumstances; and I am not at all anxious for her to be hanging around Andover with extra time on her hands and in such close and intimate contact with the influences emanating from Abbot and elsewhere which have already caused me so much unnecessary trouble. If it is not practicable for Mary to continue work with you beyond the date mentioned, I shall try to make arrangements for her to go at once to Elmira and start operations there with a member of the faculty with whom I hope to have her continue work during the summer.

Very sincerely yours</text>

My dear Mary:
Thank you for your frank letter received this morning.

I have no desire to force you to go with the Russells to their sunnier place, but would much prefer to have you go on to Elmira and

get settled for the summer. Mr. Sze and his friends out there are working on this problem and hope to advise me soon of a suitable place for your turner residence and work. I am glad that this is what you also prefer to do. Just when does Arthur’s commencement come? If we can fit that into the program properly, it will, of course, be done.

I hope the check has reached you by this time. I failed to get it into the first letter but sent it to you the next day, if I recall.

Very sincerely yours.</text>

My dear Mrs. Russell:

I have just received the accompanying documents from the Registrar of Elmira College. May I trouble you to have these filled out, so far as possible, and returned to me before they are sent to Elmira.

I am sorry to have to bother you so much with the details of Mary’s admission to college, but evidently this is one of the rather exacting duties that falls upon the heads of schools at this particular time of year.

Very Sincerely yours,
Alfred S. Stearns

P. S. Kindly return all the papers, including the instruction sheet.

The Committee on Admission to Elmira College has received your application. Since the number of candidates for admission exceeds the number the College is prepared to educate, the Trustees have limited the number of entering students. This committee has, therefore, been empowered to make a selection from those applicants who have satisfied the scholastic entrance requirements as set forth in the Catalogue of Elmira College.
As a basis of selection, the Committee will consider the candidate’s scholarship, character, and seriousness of purpose. Decisions will be reached after a comparative evaluation of the claims of all applicants.
In order to assist the Committee in this selection, you are asked to fill out the enclosed blank and to return it immediately. Unless specifically requested, no acknowledgment of your reply will be given until your application has been considered.
Prior to final action the Committee must receive:
1.	A notification from the Registrar of the College that you have made a deposit of $5.00 for registration fee.
2.	A notification from the Registrar of the College that you have satisfied in full the scholastic requirements for entrance;
3.	The return of the enclosed blank, properly and completely filled out.
The Committee will inform candidates of their prospects as rapidly as possible after requirements 1 and 3 have been met.
Send replies to Registrar, Elmira College, Elmira, N. Y.</text>

Miss Ernestine Trench
Executive Secretary,
Elmira College
Elmira. N. Y.

My dear Miss French:

This morning’s mail brings me a letter from Mr.Sze of Washington, in which he has been good enough to enclose your letter of May 25 to him.

I am sorry that I have not fully appreciated, apparently, just what was expected of me in planning for the summer of my ward, Mary Sun. I had gathered the impression that Mr. Sze, who is familiar with conditions at Elmira was looking after the matter and would notify me when he was finally ready to make a recommendation. Evidently I have been remiss and should have followed the matter up myself.

As I have just written Mr. Sze, the Kenniston House arrangement, with Miss Farnham as a chaperone, seems likely to meet the needs of the case. If I read your letter aright, a Miss Millan Fitzpatrick will act as tutor and I am, of course, glad to accept your judgment as to the character and ability of those whom you recommend. If you will kindly advise me what the expense will probably be, I shall be ready and glad to pat.my endorsement on the whole proposition.

May I also ask you at how early a date Miss Sun can plan to take up her residence with Ithaca. I find that Miss Sun’s present school closes early in June, and I hope there will not be too long a period intervening between that late and the beginning of the new life and work at Ithaca, for this is, as you know, an extremely busy time for those connected with educational institutions, and I shall find it a bit difficult to provide temporary accommodations and interests for Miss Sun during that time. Naturally I should like to have Miss Sun start at Ithaca as soon as practicable, and she, herself, has expressed this wish.

As to the amount of tutoring, I can’t speak with any great definiteness. My impression is that Miss Fitzpatrick will have to feel her way a little and decide, after personal observation, the nature and extent of the work required. I shall be ready, however, to meet any reasonable charge. Mary’s tutor will find, I think, that the girl can be depended upon to do a good deal of conscientious work by herself, once direction and guidance have been given her.

Thanking you most heartily for the generous interest you are taking in this case and assuring you of my desire to cooperate in every possible way, believe me

Very sincerely yours,</text>
