Sun, a Chinese ward of mine now at Amherst College. I have filled out the blank and am returning it herewith, but I can’t refrain from adding a personal word in Sun’s behalf. Charles Sun is a rare boy, a fine scholar, a perfect little gentleman. and as clean and wholesome as they are made. He comes from one of the best families in China, his father having served during the war as Head of the Chinese Red Cross and as heads of various other philanthropic organizations both before and since the war. Charlie lived in my house for several years while he was in school here, and I know him in consequence pretty intimately and this leads me to recommend him to you almost without reservation. I am sure you would find him a wonderfully helpful member of your force, and I am sure, too, that it would be a splendid thing for your boys to get this intimate and friendly contact with such a clean-cut and wholesome representative of his race. Sun, Tientsin, April 17, 1928 Relation A related resource My Dear Mr. Sun: A short time ago I received word from the Dean of Elmira College that Mary's work in at least two subjects was very unsatisfactory and that her status in the college was consequently precarious. I wrote at once to the dean and asked for a frank analysis of the situation as the college authorities viewed it, and I am enclosing herewith a copy of the Dean's reply. Mary's case has worried me a good bit for some time. Early in the year she wrote me a letter, prompted evidently by her dissatisfaction with her work and distress over the situation in general. It has been my feeling that Mary has plenty of ability to meet the college demands, even on the basis of her present schedule of work, but that her utter lack of interest in most of the subjects she is taking and her failure to find in the general college course that which she believes will be of value to her in later life have completely undermined her ambition and that without that ambition progress has been rendered practically impossible. I still feel that, if Mary’s interest in nursing, for example, could be encouraged and permission given her to shape her work along that general line, it would mean a complete change in the picture, and for the better. Dean Harris evidently shares my views, though I do not recall that I have ever discussed this particular phase of the matter with her; nor did I know before that Elmira College provided a course of this kind. Very probably Mary herself may have told the Dean of her ambition, though I can only guess as to that. As I view the matter now, it looks very much as if the college authorities would feel that Mary's work did not justify them in allowing her to return her membership in the college much longer and complete the college course and graduate. Frankly, I should be very anxious as to the effect on Mary of a forced termination of the college career. Such a distressing outcome should be avoided if possible, and I am beginning to wonder whether that can be done without altering completely Mary's present course of study and allowing her to choose a different goal and one more in accord with her natural tastes and ability. I shall, of course, accept your judgment in the matter and urge Mary, as I have always done in the past, to abide by your wishes and do her best to justify your hope; but these latest reports from Elmira naturally make me anxious and lead me to wonder whether we are handling the case to the best advantage of all concerned. Stearns to Charles Sun, Amherst College, March 15, 1928 Relation A related resource Dear Charlie: When I was in Springfield two weeks ago to meet a preaching engagement, I met by appointment the representatives of the Aetna Insurance Company who went over me in careful detail all the items connected with your automobile accident and the financial obligations which you will apparently have to face in the way of damages. The men I met seemed to be exceptionally straight-forward and reliable fellows, and I cannot help feeling that you were extremely fortunate to be involved with one of the most responsible insurance companies in the country rather than with some crook lawyer who might, perhaps, as often happens, have sought to collect damages from you mounting up into the thousands. With the exception of one item, which the Insurance Company is looking up more fully and carefully, I don't see how the figures submitted can be reduced. The total comes to a bit over $700.00 and the Company has promised to send me the necessary waivers when the item referred to above has been checked up, and I have promised them that the obligation would be duly met. I am sorry, but I don't see how we can possibly get out of it in any better way. When it comes to the question of payment, I need your advice. I can send the check direct from here, but of course I will have to enter it on the statement of your account which eventually will go home to your father. While I don't wish to conceal anything from your father that he should properly know, I don't want to alarm him unduly by submitting an item of this size of which he may not have been informed in advance. I am wondering, therefore, whether you have said anything about this to him or not. Of course it would be possible, and I think, proper to send you the sum involved and allow you to pay the Company with your own check, especially if you think you are going to be able to find a way to work off some of the obligations through your own efforts. This would give you a longer chance, perhaps, and a better opportunity to explain the situation to your father, but I am very sure that in the end that explanation ought to be given.
