<text>My Dear Mr. Sun:

A short time ago I received word from the Dean of Elmira College that Mary's work in at least two subjects was very unsatisfactory and that her status in the college was consequently precarious. I wrote at once to the dean and asked for a frank analysis of the situation as the college authorities viewed it, and I am enclosing herewith a copy of the Dean's reply.

Mary's case has worried me a good bit for some time. Early in the year she wrote me a letter, prompted evidently by her dissatisfaction with her work and distress over the situation in general. It has been my feeling that Mary has plenty of ability to meet the college demands, even on the basis of her present schedule of work, but that her utter lack of interest in most of the subjects she is taking and her failure to find in the general college course that which she believes will be of value to her in later life have completely undermined her ambition and that without that ambition progress has been rendered practically impossible. I still feel that, if Mary’s interest in nursing, for example, could be encouraged and permission given her to shape her work along that general line, it would mean a complete change in the picture, and for the better. Dean Harris evidently shares my views, though I do not recall that I have ever discussed this particular phase of the matter with her; nor did I know before that Elmira College provided a course of this kind. Very probably Mary herself may have told the Dean of her ambition, though I can only guess as to that.

As I view the matter now, it looks very much as if the college authorities would feel that Mary's work did not justify them in allowing her to return her membership in the college much longer and complete the college course and graduate. Frankly, I should be very anxious as to the effect on Mary of a forced termination of the college career. Such a distressing outcome should be avoided if possible, and I am beginning to wonder whether that can be done without altering completely Mary's present course of study and allowing her to choose a different goal and one more in accord with her natural tastes and ability. I shall, of course, accept your judgment in the matter and urge Mary, as I have always done in the past, to abide by your wishes and do her best to justify your hope; but these latest reports from Elmira naturally make me anxious and lead me to wonder whether we are handling the case to the best advantage of all concerned. May I rely on you to advise me frankly on receipt of this letter just what I ought to do under the circumstances.

Please give my warmest regards to Arthur, and believe me with constant good will.

Very sincerely yours,</text>

                <text>Dear Mary:

I have just read with interest your letter written last Sunday and am sorry to learn that your father has once more vetoed the nurse proposition. Curiously, after hearing from your Dean only a few days ago, I wrote your father enclosing the Dean’s letter and urging once more that favorable consideration be given to your expressed desire to train for nursing. As Miss Harris and I are both agreed that this would seemingly be wise, I dared hope that our joint recommendation might produce some effect. From what you write me, however, I am naturally fearful that we shall not accomplish much.

In the meantime if your father has expressed his desire for you to take shorthand and typewriting, go at this at once and with all the enthusiasm you can command. At your age it will mean hard and steady work, but you can accomplish much even against the handicap of age, provided you will give the work your serious and constant attention.

I am very much disappointed at the low marks lately reported from the Dean’s Office, for it is evident that, unless your standing can be distinctly bettered, the college authorities are not likely to be willing to have you return next year and complete the course. That would mean that a transfer to another college would be wholly out of the question I can’t believe that you need to or will be willing to face a real catastrophe like this and I am still convinced that earnest effort on your part can prevent it. Since your father has expressed himself so definitely, there is only one thing for you to do and that is to abide by his wishes and do the best that is within your power with the courses you are carrying. I shall look forward hopefully to later reports which I earnestly trust may be of a far more satisfactory kind.

With all good wishes, believe me

Ever sincerely yours,</text>

                <text>My dear Mary:

I have read with interest your letter of April 30 just received, and, as requested, I am sending you a check to cover general expenses during the weeks ahead.

By all means see what you can obtain from Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges in the way of admission on transfer. I should much prefer to have you in one of these institutions, especially the former, even at the expense of a year’s standing. Let me know just soon as you hear from them and tell me exactly what they have to say. Perhaps it might even help if in your letters you referred them to me as your American guardian and suggested that they write me for further information.

I know pretty intimately both President Woolley and President Neilson and might be able to secure their personal interest in your case, and this would help.

It may interest you to know that your father in a letter which I received from him only a week or two ago spoke with some favor of the possibility of the nursing course for you. He asked for further information on the matter and said that he had evidently never received the letter in which I pleaded strongly that you be allowed to take a course of this kind. Under the circumstances I did not think that that possibility need be considered longer as altogether out of the question, though frankly I am inclined to feel that, if you can secure admission to Mount Holyoke, for example, and without too serious a loss, it would perhaps be better for you to finish up the general college course. Following that, it might seem wise to round out your education with a year or two of studying nursing.

Anyway, I shall await with keen interest the replies from your inquiries at Mount Holyoke and Smith. What about Wellesley? Miss Pendleton, the President, I know perhaps the best of any of the women’s college residents, and I am sure she would deal as generously with the case as conditions would permit.

If your father wishes you to take typewriting, I think you ought to get started as soon as possible, but, of course, you can’t do that very well without running a typewriter yourself. For the present my impression is that you would do well to buy a portable machine. Doubtless there is someone connected with your faculty who directs this work and who will perhaps be better able than I to recommend the best kind of a machine for your special needs.

With all good wishes, believe me

Faithfully yours,</text>

Here’s the check, as requested, and, if, as you intimate, thus sum will carry you through until September, I have no objection to sending the whole amount at this time.

Let me know if I can help you in planning for the interim period at the close of the college and before the opening of the summer session. That is always the most difficult period to figure on for all of my Chinese wards.

With all good wishes, believe me

Ever sincerely yours,</text>
