<text>Dear Dr. Stearns,

Many thanks for your letter of May 19th & the information concerning Mary's graduation. I have written my father what you wrote to me; I hope this will satisfy him.

The old Andover hill must be pretty busy today, as, if I do not guess wrongly, the class of 1930 is graduating today. Six years ago the class of 1924 had its commencement on June 13th, Friday, so from that I figure today's is another lucky day for some Andover boys. I certainly wish that I was back in America now.

My work in the Legation runs on as usual. They keep me just busy enough to prevent me from falling into blues. If my father & my luck concurs with my wish, I shall be sailing for China with Mary next year at about this time. Mother is most anxious to have me accompany her back.

With best wishes,
Ever yours, Charlie

P.S. When you go up to the Camp this summer, please do not fail to give my best to \[Iby?\] & write me about the fishing trips. I'd love to have a \[snapoket?\] or two if possible.</text>

Dear Dr. Stearns,

Just a short note to ask you about the car that Tom bought. he wrote me very recently that he has bought a car. I would like to know whether it by himself only or partly from my money. If it is the latter-- how much? Do you mind telling me? He has put me in the dark. If he bought it all by himself -- I shall not ask further questions.

I shall be going on my vacation in three days. I am quite anxious for it.

I hope that you will have a nice summer.

Yours sincerely

Don't worry about Tom's car. Not a penny of it is being charged to your account. As a matter of fact, I yielded to Tom's pleadings only after I had given the situation long and careful thought, with the understanding that an old and second-hand Ford was to be bought and turned in at the end of the summer when Tom starts his university work. The further stipulation was that the car was to be had only on condition that Tom was to remain at Middlebury for his summer's work, though of course this does not debar him from spending a small portion, at least, of the vacation period with you if that can be arranged. If I find that Tom's expenses are running up unduly because of the possession of the article in question, orders will go forth to have it cashed in at an early date.

Very sincerely yours, </text>

                <text>My dear Dr. Stearns,

At last I have graduated from Middlebury College. I received my diploma this morning at the exercises.

When I was down at Andover the last time, you said something that you will try to secure for me a position under Secretary Stimson at Washington or at the Chinese Legation. I wonder whether you have written to either place. I am rather anxious to know because I want to make and complete arrangements down at Yale this summer.

Things for me this summer here at Middlebury are well arranged, I am taking three courses and vagabond as many more as I care to and besides I am being tutored three times a week. All the work are for reading and I am picking up conversation from speaking all the time. One has to speak French here at Middlebury during the summer, and besides all the courses will be taught in French, so that conversational French will not be missed although not taking a course in it.

I am going down to New York this week to see some of the alumni concerning the house, and I have also several dinners and engagements to attend. I expect to be there for not more than a week. Then I am coming back to Middlebury to get things ready for summer school.

My adress [sic] will be this summer

K. D. R. House
Middlebury, Vermont.

Please let me hear from you.

                <text>Dear Tom:

Thanks for your letter received this morning. I am glad indeed to learn that your plans have been definitely arranged for the summer's work at Middlebury. Good luck to you!

I am going to enclose a few notations from a recent letter received from your father in answer to my letter to him in which I took occasion to express my views about the possible dangers involved in a too long stay in America. Evidently he took the suggestion with very good grace, though I am afraid that I have not been able to alter his earlier opinions to any great extent, at least.

I am perfectly willing to write to Mr. Stimson at Washington if you still feel that you would like a job of the kind suggested, though I haven't the remotest idea that Stimson can put me in touch with such a job. I only thought that there might be such a chance and that the chance would be worth taking. On the other hand, was it not your intention when we discussed the proposition to finish out the undergraduate year at Yale first? That at least was the impression that I carried away from our interview, though possible wrongly.

With every best wish for the summer, believe me

Ever sincerely yours, </text>

Dear Dr. Stearns,

It has been a long while since I wrote you last, but things have not changed much with me except perhaps that I got thinner. I have just been sick with a cold & a horrible headache, which went away a little today. I hope to feel quite all right in a day or two.

I had supper with one of my old Andover cado classmates several days ago & day before yesterday Prof. Bradley of Amherst & also an old Andover man, called me up for supper, but my illness prevented me from seeing him that day.

London weather has lately changed for the better, but it did not make me like it anymore. I went on an excursion try to Hastings sometime ago & had the opportunity to see some English country side for the first time & I think it's rather pretty.

With best regards,
Yours faithfully,

I am just trying to clean up preparatory to my trip to the north country and a few weeks in the woods. Naturally my thoughts turn to you, for I always associate you with the Lake region. Further, I have on my desk your letter of June 19, which can [sic] only a day or two ago, and for which I extend my thanks.

I am sorry indeed to hear that you have not been well of late, but trust that you are well on the road to recovery or fully recovered by this time. If not, do get in touch with a first-class doctor and follow instructions to the letter. You can't afford to let the London climate undermine your health.

With all best wishes, believe me

I am writing to acknowledge the receipt from the London office of the National City Bank of New York of a draft on New York for three thousand dollars to be credited to the accounts of Mary and Thomas. I am crediting these accounts fifteen hundred dollars each, and have sent my acknowledgment of the receipt of the draft to the London office of the National City Bank.

I am in Andover for the day only, and hence am sending a brief note. So far as I can judge, both Mary and Tom are well, busy, and happy during these summer months. I am hoping that Tom is going to gain much from the coming year at New Haven, and am glad, also, to feel that he will be in closer touch with his sister.

With kindest regards, believe me

                <text>My dear Mr. Stearns,

The summer school is drawing to a close and my plans for the rest of the time before Yale starts is complete. I plan to go down to New Haven right after summer school here for about a week to arrange for room as well as getting acquanted [sic] with the town and some of the professors as well. Then I think I will take a little vacation and a trip up through New Hampshire and Maine. I also want to go to see all my fraternity brothers.

You probably [know] the chief significance of this letter. I want some money to last through the rest of the summer. The car is rather expensive costing me three hundred and fifty when I bought it second hand. It was almost new being only ran 4000 miles. Then registration and insurance together cost me $43.80. That was the initial cost of the car, and believe me it is a good investment. I have seen quite a lot of the country during week-ends here around Vermont and nearby New York state and New Hampshire. Of course the repair bill amounts to quite a sum also. But all considered, I think I have received more from the money invested than anything I have ever experienced. It is really great.

Since May 28, I have received eight hundred and fifty dollars from you, and the following is an account of how I spent the money

Car	350.00
Registration	19.00
Insurance	24.80
Gas and oil 42.50
Repair 31.75
Rumble seat	34.00
Trip to Boston	20.00
D.U. Alumni Fund	10.00
Trip to New York	60.00
M Club dues	3.50
Middlebury French School	3.00 Board, five weeks	40.00
Laundry since May 28	18.45
White ducks	$2.00
Mr. A.G. Hinman, Postmaster-28.00
Shoes, new and repairs,	13.00
Bathing suit	5.00
Filing cabinet	10.00
White linen knickers	4.50
Golf hose (2)	4.50
Tennis fees for French school-3.00 tennis racket restrung	6.00
French Books	7,00
General Expenditures since 5/28—20.00 Total	809.00
Balance on hand	41.

I have now only forty-one dollars on hand and still have the room and turtoring [sic] bills to pay besides two more weeks of board. I have been most ecomnomical [sic] this summer than I have ever been in the past. I put in one hundred and fifty dollars of the original money which you gave me and it is indeed a good investment. I have kept it in good condition, and in case if I want to sell it, I can get at least three hundred dollars for it and probably more. So it is really a good investment. Summer school has two more weeks to go. I will need the money ($200.00) within this week to meet the various bills which are coming. Room will cost twenty-five dollars, two weeks board will cost sixteen dollars, and turtoring [sic] lessons will come up to 42 dollars, which amount to altogether to eighty-three dollars. However the situation will [be] much relieved if you can send me the money at your earliest convenience--by the end of this week if possible.

I hope the account is satisfactory. I have a more detailed account if desired.

Sincerely yours</text>
