<text>
Dear Tom:

I have read with great interest your letter of October 6 and congratulate you on being able to express yourself so clearly and so well. You write a good letter.

As to your courses, I don’t know just what to say, though it seems to me that you have sized up the situation pretty well for yourself and that the plans you have outlined are sensible and sound. I share your feelings about the value of shorthand, unless, after your return to China, you are to deal wholly or largely with English speaking people. I don’t suppose that the shorthand you would learn in this country would be applicable to the Chinese language. If you can master type-writing, however, you are sure to find that of real value, I think, all through life.

When it comes to Physics, I am confident that you will find the subject of real value, no matter what you choose for a life work later. It is in the realm of Physics and Chemistry that the great discoveries and advances in science are being largely made today, and no one can afford to be without at least an elementary knowledge of these subjects.

Frankly, I don’t believe that you will gain enough by emphasizing music, except in so far as you can train and develop your own voice, where I judge there are real possibilities. Whatever you accomplish in that line is likely to be for your own pleasure and that of your friends but not of commercial value, at least. Personally, I can’t believe that your father would desire you to spend as much as $3.00 an hour for the doubtful results to be secured in this line.

I had a most interesting letter from Quincey several days ago. He tells me that conditions in China are worse than they were before the fighting and writes in a most discouraging vein. He also adds that he finds little, if any, of the reported hatred of foreigners but quite the reverse.

When he wrote he was

My college and fraternity bills ran much higher than I expected, these amounting to about nearly four hundred dollars. I bought a new winter suit, too, this being my first suit in about seven months. And now the fraternity wants to raise some money to buy a new victrola before the regular rushing season starts, and there are several new motions passed for various things for which I must have compensation. I will not ask for very much this time. All I ask is twenty five dollars. If you will see my situation, you will understand. I now have but fifteen dollars left in the bank, and that I have to use to buy various pamphlets and documents for the thesis which I have to write for my course in City Government.

This money I will account in together with my account for the fall. Then I will send you a full statement of all expenditures from the early part to the end of this term. But if you wish I will be glad to send you a statement of my expenses so far so that you can see the situation which I have to face. I will need the money very shortly, probably within a week, so I will be very thankful if you will send me sum immediately. I do not dare to touch the money which I have left in the bank for fear of some emmergency [sic]might turn up. I am now pledging to pay for the victrola within a week.

Your letter came last week just as I was leaving town, and I did not have a chance to comply with your request and send you a check until my return Saturday night. I did send you then a check for $25.00 which I hope has reached you safely.

Frankly, I sent the check with some misgivings, for I can’t for the life of me understand how you could have disposed of $500.00 in a single month, unless you have met most of your college expenses for a long way ahead. If this is not so, you will break all records before the year is over, and naturally I cannot view that prospect with anything but alarm. I felt so happy over your achievements last year that this wholly unexpected development comes as all the greater shock. I won’t comment on it farther, however, until I have received your detailed statement of expenditures which you have promised me.

Sincerely yours,

                <text>
Dear Charlie:

I have just received your letter of November 13 and am not surprised that you should have wondered at my absence from the Inauguration exercises at Amherst a short time ago. I had fully expected to be there and had counted on the opportunity that the trip would furnish me to have a nice little visit with you
Unfortunately the appearance in our midst of infantile paralysis made it necessary for me to cancel all outside engagements at this time, including a meeting of the College Entrance Examination Board in New York and the Amherst Inauguration, and to stay right here on the job. You can be sure that only something of real importance would have kept me from taking part in the Amherst festivities, especially when I had just been initiated into membership on the Board of Trustees.

What you write me of the flood and of the contests with Williams are most interesting. It would take a good deal of water to bring the old Connecticut up on top of Amherst Hill. Naturally I was interested to hear what happened up at Connecticut Lake where the river starts, and a letter received from Ike Brown only a few days ago tells met that the road into my camp and the one leading down from the barn to the little cabins where you boys were lodged, especially the latter, have been badly washed out. Fortunately the lake had been drawn down during the late summer and early fall, so that when the freshet came the dam didn't go out as it doubtless would have done if the Lake had been full of water at the time.

I hope you will be able to pull your work up if it has suffered of late, so that you can continue the splendid record which you have made up there to date. Incidentally, and if you get the chance, look up some of the Andover boys who have entered Amherst this fall, for there are some extra good fellows in the lot, and I am sure that you will find them congenial.

With all good wishes, believe me,

Ever faithfully yours,

AES/G

                <text>
My dear Mary:

Thanks for your letter of November 27. I am enclosing check for $300.00 to enable you to replenish your bank account.

If I were you, I should go frankly to your Dean and tell her in confidence that you do not believe you are benefited by rooming with your present chum. Put it, perhaps, on the ground that those of different nationalities find it difficult to be congenial and to make proper adjustments. I do not think you need to say anything that would involve your roommate unpleasantly, but I do think you ought to make the change if you feel that her ideals are wholly different from yours and her influence not helpful. I am perfectly sure that your father would not wish you for a minute to stay with a roommate who did not meet his ideals of what a girl ought to be.

No, I have not heard further from your father in connection with the Nurses School proposition. The moment I do, however, you will hear from me in turn, and promptly. Nor have I heard from Arthur recently, though he promised to write me frequently after his return. I have not heard that Henry Yuan has been expelled from Hamilton. I hope it isn't true. Within a few weeks I am due at Hamilton College for a preaching engagement, and I can then find out the truth.

What are the plans for the Christmas holidays? I do not quite understand from your letter. Do you mean that you are going to stay in Elmira, and, if so, just where?

With every best wish, believe me,

Always sincerely yours.
