<text>My dear Dr. Stearns:

About two weeks ago Mr. R.W. Harbison came to see me about a home for Mary Sun, who is entering college here this fall. He was in town trying to find a Christian home for her and at the suggestion of Mr. Reed, our Y.M.C.A Secretary, came to see me. I really have my life quite full, but having a daughter in China, and having had some of the Chinese girls in our home on furlough, my heart went out to Mary consented to her coming.

I was to hear from Dr. Harbison as soon as he could communicate with you. It was a bit longer than I thought it would be before I heard from him, so I called up the College to see if Mary had registered and the Registrar said that she had, and that she was assigned to the Broughton Cottage. I told her of Mr. Harbison's desire for a Christian home for Mary and she said that they had heard nothing from you about it and that all arrangements had been made for her at the Cottage, so I said nothing more.

Then, a day or two after, Mr. Harbison's letter came, Mr. Pittman’s Secretary was here at the time and she offered to go over to the College and get the information Mr. Harbison wished, and said that she could tell them about our home as I perhaps would not wish to. She has known us for twenty-five years. I let her go and the Registrar said that nothing could be done now but that she would talk to President Lent about it. She sent back Mr. Harbison's letter the next day with a note which I sent on to Mr. Harbison.

Yesterday a telephone message came from Mr. Harbison while I was at Church, a friend receiving the message. He said that he had heard nothing from me but that he still wished her to come and wished that I would write you and his sister in Cortland.

They gave me none of the information Mr. Harbison desired. I think I must now leave the matter in your hands for they seem already to think at the College that I am interfering.

Very sincerely yours,</text>

                <text>My dear Mrs. Pitman:

I have your letter of September 21 and am sorry beyond words for all the trouble you have been caused over the uncertainly [sic] in regard to Mary Sun's rooming arrangement at Elmira. I, myself, have been tremendously disturbed by the whole affair which has had, seemingly, endless complications.

Mr. Robinson, to whom you refer, is secretary of the Y.M.C.A in Tientsin, Mary's home, and is a personal friend of her father. He happens to be in this country this summer and, when he heard of the college arrangements made for Mary, expressed the view that Mary's father wished her to room for the first year, at least, in some good Christian home. He volunteered to find such a home, if he could, and I, of course, accepted gladly this offer. In the meantime, Mary had signed up for a dormitory room in the college, and the interchange of a number of telegrams left us both somewhat uncertain as to what the final outcome would and should be.

Mr. Robinson later wrote me that he had asked his sister, who lived in Cortland, to go to Elmira to complete the arrangements, and I wired Mary Sun, who had mildly protested against the change of plan, that she must accept this new arrangement and cancel the college room contract at once. I assumed that there would still be time for the college to fill the vacancy thus created. In the meantime, it appears that the college authorities had strongly advised Mary not to live outside the college buildings. When Mr. Robinson’s sister appeared at Elmira, she received the same urgent advice and wired me that under the circumstances she felt that the dormitory arrangement should hold. A letter from the Registrar of Elmira College, received by me the next day, contained also the same advice couched in very strong language. and in view of these facts I felt that the only thing I could properly do was to wire Mary to stand by the original dormitory plan. I assumed, of course, that Miss Robinson would explain the situation fully to you, and I am sorry if she did not do so at the time.

Trusting that the above explanation will make the situation perfectly clear and will show you, too, that all of us tried to the best of our ability to act in good faith to all concerned, believe me

Very sincerely yours,

Thank you for the contents of your recent telegram of inquiry.

Under the circumstances it would probably be necessary for you to be vaccinated again and at once, for the Elmira medical requirement demands vaccination within a period of five years previous to admission. You should report the situation, therefore, at once to the college authorities and follow their instructions.

As to board, I can't, of course, tell you at this distance where to go. You ought to be able to select competently for yourself. If there is a regular college dining hall for most, or a large number, of the student body, by all means board there, at least for the first term or year. When you know the situation better, you can later select something else if you prefer. Ask the Registrar or some competent teacher for advice if you are still unable to decide.

Very sincerely yours,</text>

                <text>Dear Mary:

Your good letter of September 27 has just reached me. I am glad that you are writing your father a full explanation of the complications which arose in connection with your trip to Elmira, for I am sure that, when he hears from Mr. Robinson, he will feel that I distinctly neglected my proper responsibilities, and I know that he will be disturbed.

The chief reason I accepted the invitation to preach at Elmira was the opportunity it would afford me to see you in your new surroundings and talk things all over with you in person. As you know, we have had little chance in recent months to discuss your affairs, and I am consequently glad of this coming chance to do so.

With all good wishes, believe me,

Faithfully yours,

                <text>Dear Tommie:

I have read with great interest your last letter and also that which you wrote to Mr. Eaton and which Mr. Eaton showed to me. Congratulations, and hearty ones on your successes to date! Don't let them turn your head, though, or prompt you to feel that the Freshman year is going to be any snap. You will have your hands full, I am sure, if you weather that year successfully, and of course we can't consider anything but a successful outcome.

I have sent you $500.00, as you know, and in doing so I have some misgivings, naturally, in view of your past carelessness in handling money. My earnest hope is that, by putting this added responsibility on you, I shall be justified through finding that you have developed a clearer appreciation of money's value and a stronger will in keeping expenditures where they belong. If, when you seek to replenish your funds, you are able to render me a satisfactory account of the disbursement of the $500.00 in question, I shall be ready and glad to continue this arrangement, assuming, of course, that the money has lasted as long as it ought. If you can only do as well as Quincey and Charlie have done since they have been in college, I shall be delighted beyond words and at the first opportunity shall gladly pass on the good news to your father, who, I am sure, would be immensely relieved at such a report.

The best of luck to you,
