<text>Dear Tommie:

Thanks for your letter just received.

I had a good visit with Mary in Elmira Sunday and found her in the best of health and spirits. She plans to pass her Christmas holidays in Springfield with friends. Charlie will be in Amherst, and Arthur will be at work probably not far from Springfield; so that I imagine that it would be a mighty nice thing if you could arrange to spend a few days of your vacation in Springfield or Amherst. Anyway, come and see me as soon as you get away for your vacation, and we can talk it over. I only regret that I can’t from circumstances provide a welcome in my home this year, as in the past, for you Chinese friends.

No boxes have appeared from China yet, but if they do come and are in condition to forward and so that you can be sure of receiving them before you leave, I will send yours on. Otherwise I shall hold them here for further orders.

Very sincerely yours,

                <text>My dear Irving:

Delighted to get your letter today.

I am not going to consider any of the possibilities that may deflect you from the Red Pencils, as I am counting on your being there. A change of climate is very essential to both you and Mrs. Moultrop.

May I take this opportunity to way that the following are advices on the young Chinese technology student, Arthur Sun.

He called on Mr. Weston and Mr. Eddy. Mr. Weston saw him but Mr. Eddy was away. Mr. Weston seemed to think that he had better hold on to his present job. He was very nice to him, however, and wants later to have him dine with him.

Young Sun, and I think he is right, wants to be affiliated with one of those two firms, and he is counting on an opportunity to go with Mr. Eddy’s firm. It is my understanding that Mr. Eddy returned to his office December 1st. Sun had a very nice talk with Mr. Eddy’s right hand man,	Mr. Frail, who asked him to fill in an application blank. He has done this.

I have	read a	letter that Sun has written to Dr. Stearns at Andover, and it has given me some good reactions
about him. If an opportunity lends, and I am not imposing too much, perhaps should you Know Mr. Frail or Mr. Eddy, you might

say a good word in his direction prior to the time the young man has his interview.

I have advised Dr. Stearns that it is best for Sun to hold on to his present job until he can land something with either Mr. Weston or Mr. Eddy.

With my best regards, -

Cordially yours,

WSM:R

                <text>My dear Dr. Stearns:

Your letter of November 30th about young Sun has just reached me. Please do not for a minute think that the matter is eating into my time and thought. As I wrote you before I am interested in young Sun and want to help him in any way I can. I am glad you sent me his letter, for it gives me a line on his makeup. The reaction is good.

It would seem to me that the wisest thing he can do is to stick right by the job he has, holding it as a pivotal point against any change that can later be made either with Mr. Weston or Mr. Eddy. It is evident that Mr. Weston is interested in him by virtue of his invitation to dine with him some time when he is not busy, and something may develop there.

A position with Mr. Eddy’s firm still seems to be a possibility, and he was wise to fill in the application blank.
I have always thought it advisable for a young man to hold on to any honorable position he may have and move from it to another when justified, rather than have a blank space between the two jobs.

I rather feel that Messrs. Metcalf & Eddy will later offer him some position, and if he could simply say to them, when he meets Mr. Eddy, that he is holding on to his job until they can take him on, it will strengthen his position.

I have again written Mr. Moultrop as per copy.

The boy is going to get there, although like the rest of us, he may have to wait a little while. Again I want to say, I liked his letter. I am returning it to you herewith. We are looking forward to seeing our youngsters, and hope that they will come back in good standing I think that they are making every best effort towards such a result.

With kind regards,-

Very sincerely yours,

Thanks for your letter of December 3 and for the kindly sentiments expressed therein.

I am glad that you feel as you do about Arthur Sun’s present job and I have tried to emphasize to the boy that, regardless of where he starts, he will only be a real success in the end to the extent in which he enlarges for himself, by efficient service and achievement, the boundaries, whatever their size, of the job that is for the moment his. Just how capable he is intellectually of doing this, I am not quite sure, though I hope that he will be found to possess a proper amount of ambition, at least.

                <text>Dear Dr. Stearns:

Your letter certainly comforted me a great deal, for I was about to ask your permission to let me stay right here in Amherst during the vacation but was unable to put my proposal into words as not to have any misunderstanding. Now since you cannot have me this year, it turns out well for both sides; so I may say I am both sorry and glad of my not being with you this Christmas. Thank you for your kind anxiety; I am sure I shall have a good time; I shall meditate my ideal Christmas and dream it as a poet might do. If my stay in Amherst suits your wishes, please let me know.

If Miss Clemons is now back from Europe, I shall write her when vacation begins, but at present I am very busy and shall become busier every day from now on until Christmas holidays.

Mary, as you already know, wishes to pass her vacation with an old Abbot friend of hers, who lives in Springfield. This girl is one of those who made such a fuss at Marry’s [sic] transfer from Abbot. I met her once when her aunt together with her drove a distant cousin of mine from Springfield College to see me, for the aunt is my friend’s landlady, I think. From what I could see, they were nice people; and since you cannot have Marry [sic] in the house this year, it is just as wel1l for her to go to her friend's as to stay in her dormitory in college. This is my sug¬gestion, but, of course, you may have previous plans.

Recpectfully [sic] yours,
