Dear Helen:
Thank you for your letter of January 13.
Please understand that I have not surrendered completely my guardianship by any means, but that Mrs. Nye is acting, as it were, as my representatives and agent. I am sure that we shall be able to work in complete harmony, but if any questions arise to trouble you, don't hesitate to come to me with them.
Trusting that the winter term will prove a happy and successful one for you, believe me always,
Very sincerely yours,

My dear Dr. Stearns:
I was very glad to hear that you understand that the New York trip was only misunderstood each other between Mr. Sanborn and I.
I just received a letter from my father, and he said better for me to stay at Mrs. Erving's again this year. I wrote and told him about my being in a faculty house, the coming year, so I told him about the view point of mine about the faculty house. He thought I did better stay at Mrs. Erving's; so the boys won't bother me while I do my lesson. And other reasons the boys often come to people room to brrow [sic] things or take it without asking the owner.
Sometimes the boys like to rough house; they might put me in the pig mess too. When they come to my room; I can't tell them to get out, if I do they might think that I high-hate them.
I don't what to do just now. See, you have been a father to me in this country for three years now. Everytime I have difficults [sic] I alwys [sic] come to see you about it. In this country except Helen you are the next close friend I get. So I want you tell me what to do. Good luck to you always,
Very sincerely yours,

Dear Mrs. Nye:
Thank you for your letter just received.
I am delighted to hear that Mr. Tsai is to allow Helen and Alfred to go back home this coming summer. It will mean a lot to them, I have no doubt. Just at present I am having some rather distressing interviews by letter and in person with the three Sun children, who are still in this country completing their ninth year away from home, and whose father seems determined to have them stay [illegible] longer. I say in this country, though that is not quite true, for Charlie has recently joined the Legation in London, though for how long is any one's guess. Mr. Sun, Sr., is obsessed with the notion so common among Chinese of his class that an American advanced degree, regardless of what the degree stands for, is going to prove an open sesame socially, politically, and intellectually to those who return with it to their homeland.
What you write of Mr. and Mrs. Tsai is immensely interesting and a bit amusing if it did not have a tragic element in it too. When Mr. Stimson, the present Secretary of State, when out to take charge of his Philippine job a couple of years ago, I gave him a letter of introduction to Mr. Tsai, whom he finally located in the Rockefeller Hospital in Peking under "treatment" for the same political illness which seems to have overtaken both him and his good wife lately. I don't see how any native Chinese with a reasonable amount of intelligence and vision, especially if he happens to have a little wealth besides, can negotiate life's path these days without going crazy.
With every best wish for the New Year, believe me
Very sincerely yours,
Dr. Alfred E. Stearns

Dear Mr. Tsai:
Your generous and very deeply appreciated Christmas present was beautifully timed, for the tea reached me just the day before Christmas itself. Naturally I was delighted to have the tea, but even more pleased with the generous and friendly thought which I knew lay back of it and started it on its long journey.
As you had more than amply provided for my on personal needs, I have enjoyed greatly the privilege of sharing your gift with several close friends to whom I am under special debt, and who value as highly as I do a choice blend of tea. For this reason, you see, your gift has served a double purpose and has done some really worth while missionary work. Please understand that I have kept for my own use and for the entertainment of my friends in my home an ample supply.
I sent you Alfred’s last term report very recently and cannot refrain from commenting on the improvement which the boy has shown in his work this current school year. I think he is really beginning to find himself now and that the evidence of actual achievement is going to spur him to still greater endeavor. He and Helen are spending the holidays with their good friends, the Nyes, in South Weymouth, and Helen has written me enthusiastically of the fine time they are having.
Trusting that the New Year will bring you and your family all life’s richest and most enduring blessings, and with warm personal regards, believe me
Sincerely and gratefully yours,
Dr. Alfred E. Stearns

Dear Helen:
Thank you for your note of December 26, signed by you and Alfred. I am sure you will find a lot that is stimulating in those books I gave you if you will take time to look them over. They are crammed full of worth while thoughts emanating from the best thinkers of every race and nation, past and present.
I am delighted that you are both having such a good time and hope that you appreciate what wonderful friends you have in the Nyes and will make them realize your appreciation by what you are able and willing to do for them in return.
The happiest of New Years to you both when that season arrives.
Ever sincerely yours,

My dear Mrs. Nye:
Thank you for your letter with the accompanying statement of disbursements. I will send the statement as requested to Mr. Tsai. Sr., though I am sure that he will not feel that it is necessary for you to go to so much trouble and detail.
I am sending you an additional check to replenish your depleted reserve account.
You are unquestionably right in increasing Helen’s allowance. I have never attempted to limit my Chinese wards to the exact amount of their monthly allowances, and have frequently added five and ten dollars here and there for extras and indeed have increased the amount of the formal allowance as they have gone on in their school and college work and have attained more maturity. I am perfectly sure that Helen will never be over-extravagant, though I would hardly feel justified in saying as much for Alfred. Even Alfred, though, seems to be exercising a little more control in this respect than formerly.
The charge of $2.00 a day for room and board when the children are with you is if anything altogether too small. Several years ago when I had four or five of the Chinese in my own family, I tried to figure out exactly what it cost me a week and to charge them accordingly. Of course, in a big house the charges and wear and tear necessarily mounted accordingly. My first thought was that it could be done for about $15.00 a week. Later I became convinced that this was altogether too little, and the charge was raised to $20.00. Still later, after figuring not only board and room but proportionate light and heat, wear, and tear, etc., it was clear that even this amount did not cover the actual outlay. I had to have an extra servant in the house and hire a man to come in for extra cleaning, all of which made the outlay mount rapidly. Like you, I would have been delighted to do the thing for nothing, but simply could not afford to do so. I am perfectly clear, therefore, that if anything you are charging too little at a $2.00 a day rate.
Alfred’s marks are not yet in for the current term, but I do hope that they will be as he writes you, “very good” ones. Alfred is a glorious optimist, however, all the time, and I shall feel more comfortable when I see the marks actually on paper. He has been doing, however, much better this year than formerly, so that I am increasingly encouraged.
It is with the keenest regret that I hear of the strain and sorrow to which you have been subjected during these recent months, and I can only offer my sincerest sympathy and the earnest hope that Dr. Nye will completely and speedily regain his full health and vigor. May I wish you none the less the blessings of the Christmas season and a happy New Year.
Very sincerely yours,
Dr. Alfred E. Stearns

Dear Helen:
Thank you for your interesting letter and the account of those rough and tumble basket-ball games. I didn’t suppose that girls could be anything but polite even in basket-ball! Anyway, I hope you have suffered no injuries that will prevent you from enjoying your Thanksgiving dinner when it comes, or continuing to enjoy basketball as well.

Dear Helen:
Thank you for your letter of November 10.
I will continue to keep the fifty dollars you earned last year in the bank until you desire to use it. When you do, just let me know, for it is of course yours, and its final disposition is in your hands and not mine.
Thanks, too, for the interesting picture of the school building. You must have wonderfully beautiful grounds and buildings from all I hear, and I hope that perhaps I may be able to see them for myself before the current school year is over.
With best wishes, believe me

Dear Helen:
When you were last here you spoke to me about your possible desire to take over for your own uses the fifty dollars which I have been holding for you at your father’s request. Is it still your wish to have me send you this money or shall I continue to keep it in the bank?
Faithfully yours,
