Dear Helen:
Thank you for your note of Marcy 3. I am glad that the arrangement with Mrs. Nye proves so acceptable to not only you and Alfred but your father as well.
I am sorry to learn that you have been ill. This is the time of year, however, when it is pretty difficult to get through without some slight illness, and we have been having our share among the boys - mostly German measles. All have been light cases, but they have been terribly annoying and decidedly interrupting to school work.
Shortly after Christmas I received a letter from your father in which he asked me to purchase and give to you and Alfred from him as Christmas presents some good books that you would wish to add to your libraries and hold for the future. As the letter came too late to permit me to carry out the request at the Christmas season and as the period following Christmas was more than usually busy, I delayed doing my part of the job. Recently, however, I picked some books that I felt would measure up to your father's requirements and meet his wishes, and I am sending you yours by parcel post. Please understand that they are a present from your father to you, and I hope very much that you will enjoy and profit by them. They are what we would call standard works, since it seemed better to me to secure something of that kind rather than a book that might be popular at the moment but the later value of which would perhaps be questionable.
With all best wishes to you, believe me
Very sincerely yours,

My dear Mrs. Nye:
Thank you for your note of March 4.
Yes, I did pay Helen's second installment on tuition at St. Mary's. The bill was sent to me in January, and it seemed just as well to settle it from the funds on hand here as to draw so heavily on the more limited funds in your hands. I had thought that, since you would naturally have a better understanding of Helen's individual and more personal needs the expenses involved in any such might more naturally be met by you than by me.
With kindest regards, believe me
Very sincerely yours,

My dear Mrs. Nye:
I am enclosing a letter just received from Sister Mary Antony of Saint Mary's School, with the accompanying notice of the train on which Helen is to leave New York for Boston and the hour of arrival in Boston. A request is made for an acknowledgment of the receipt of the notice, and instructions if other arrangements than those planned are desired. May I suggest that under the circumstances and in view of the lateness of the date it would probably be well for you to telegraph the Sister Superior in order to avoid the possibility of any misunderstanding.
Very sincerely yours,

My dear Mr. Tsai:
Thank you for your last letter, that of March 4, which I have just received and which I have read with keen interest. Thank you, too, for your friendly thoughtfulness in sending the tea, the arrival of which I shall await with interest and pleasant anticipation. I can assure you that it will be thoroughly appreciated and enjoyed when it comes.
I am enclosing Alfred's report for the term just ended, and I am glad to say that this indicates definite gains on Alfred's part. As you will note, we are giving him two courses in English, which I am sure will meet with your approval. We realized from the start that Alfred would be unable to make a passing grade in the second year English, but we felt, on the other hand, that he would gain much for the work ahead by taking the extra work in this subject, for of course all of his work, both here and in his later college course, will be helped or hindered according to the extent of his knowledge of English and his facility in handling it.
I am pleased to note that the boy has succeeded in gaining a passing grade in French, and I am sure that with this encouragement he ought to do even better from now on. Algebra still bothers him and it looks as if we could not expect him to excel in Mathematics. We shall hope, though, for better returns even in this subject as the boy becomes more familiar with his task and its peculiar demands. You will note that his general record for the term is without a flaw, and that in itself calls for hearty commendation.
From all the reports that I get from Saint Mary's School, Helen is making good progress and is very happy in her surroundings. Alfred is already with Mrs. Nye, as this is our spring recess period, and Helen is due to join him there shortly.
With warm personal regards, believe me always
Very sincerely yours,
