Dear Dr Stearns;

Yours of the 12th is received. Personally I feel that the best alternative to placing young students with desirable families which are very difficult to find,is small boarding schools where the number is so limited that teachers can give individual attention to their pupils. I shall send at once a copy of your letter to me together with a copy of this reply to Admiral Tsai,with the request to wire me,if he has any special preference, we shall try to comply with his wishes.

I feel very grateful that you consent to act as guardian to Admiral Tsai’s two children.

Yours sincerely
Sao-Ke Alfred Sze

Dear Admiral Tsai:

Your letter of August 11 is received enclosing a draft for $4,000. As I cabled you today your two children have arrived at Seattle. The Consul there has been instructed to extend to them every facility in addition to the customs and immigration courtesies I have asked of the State Department. Unfortunately I shall have already left for Europe by the time when they reach Washington but the Legation will take care of them here until they go to Dr. Stearns. My family is still away for the summer so the living part of the Legation is only partially open. Under the circumstance , I should think it would be more comfortable to stay in some boarding house near the Legation.

I am sending a check for 2,000 (half of your remittance)to Dr. Stearns at once and keeping the remaining $2,000 here part of which to be used for payment of incidental expenses they may be incurred before they leave for Mass. I propose to turn the balance over to Dr. Stearns about Christmas times. It would greatly simplify matters to have one person- that is, Dr. Stearns - to have charge of all the accounts. In fact, Dr. Stearns has more experience in deciding allowances, etc. for Chinese students here.

Yours sincerely.

My dear Dr. Sze:

On my return to Andover I find your letter of September 9 and
the accompanying check $2,000.00, which 1 shall hold for the expenses of Admiral Tsai’s two children. Please send me the names of these two newcomers in order that I may be able to handle their accounts intelligently.

Our school opens the first of this coming week, and if the boy
is going to be able to meet cur requirements here without some further preparation, he should report at the earliest possible date. Of course I have not been able to make any definite arrangements yet for either of those travelers, since I am wholly ignorant of the extent and character of their previous work. A large number of our Chinese students who have come to us in the past have had to put in at least a year in small schools in order to get the foundation, especially in English, required to insure successful work in the larger classses of a school of this kind. If, therefore, you will instruct the Tsais to report here as speedily as possible, I shall be glad to go over their cases very carefully with them and then decide what the wisest course to adopt for the current year is likely to be.

I am sending this letter to Mr. Tung Kwai, as requested, in case you may have sailed for Europe before its receipt.

Very sincerely yours.
