My dear Mrs. Mok:
Your letter of July 29th reached Andover in my absence and was acknowledged by my secretary. I am writing at this time merely to advise you that I am endeavoring to the best of my ability to carry out your instructions. Sung comes to me from time to time to secure needed funds, and he is very careful to submit a retailed statement of his expenditures, which so far as I can judge indicate that he is not over-extravagant in his use of money. He is now rooming at the Clement House on School Street, which I believe is in accordance with your wish.
Sung seems happy and contented. In his work he is still having some difficulty, though I think he is making better progress than he did last year. My impression of the boy is that he will improve steadily even if slowly as he goes higher in his studies. His spirit seems of the best, and I have always found him most courteous and reliable.
I think I can appreciate what it must mean to leave your boy so far away from home, and I can assure you that I shall always deem it a privilege to aid or care for him in any way within my power should the occasion arise. So far Sung has been in the best of health and I do not anticipate that he will need any special attention in this direction. Our infirmary, as you know, is thoroughly up-to-date, and is in charge of a competent matron. Boys requiring medical attention are at once cared for at the infirmary, and in case of special emergencies are attended by the most competent physicians that can be secured in Boston.
Thanking you again for your very kind letter and with personal regards and the best of wishes, believe me,
Very sincerely yours,
Dr. Alfred E. Stearns

My dear Mok:
While I was coming back on the train from New York last week, I happened to talk with Mr. Ezra P. Rounds, a teacher at Exeter, who told me that his brother had some conversation with you at a bankers' banquet not long ago in China. When Mr. Rounds described the important position which you now occupy in business circles in your native country, I could hardly believe that you were the boy who once was an undergraduate at Andover, and when Mr. Rounds added that you had told his brother that the two happiest years of your life were spent on Andover Hill, I was very much pleased indeed. You are the kind of alumnus whom we like to turn out.
I assume that you have kept somewhat in touch with recent events at your old school. Dr. Stearns, who resigned two years ago, has definitely retired and is in excellent health at his home in Danvers. Mr. Forbes, who succeeded him as Acting Headmaster, died on March 12, 1933, and I was shortly elected to succeed him. We have tried to carry on the tradition so familiar to you, and I hope that the Academy has not deteriorated in our hands.
This is simply to wish you a very prosperous New Year and to assure you that I shall be glad to hear from you from time to time as to what is going on in your very interesting life.
Cordially yours,

Dear Dr. Stearns,
I have to apologise for not having written before now. My father-in-law died shortly after my arrival and I have not had the time and opportunity to do much letter writing.
Mrs. Wei has returned to this colony and I feel sure my son is missing her company very much indeed. However, I am consoled to know that he is under your sole care and that you will give him your constant attention. I shall be happy if you will be good enough to have him with you during the holidays or see that he goes with one of your assistants. He is quite a stranger in the States and I am not confident that he is capable to look after himself. I am also anxious to know whether he can be accommodated at No. 11 School house for board.
Last August I sent you $500 Gold and I trust you have already received the remittance, and I am now sending you a couple of silver vases and some tea and I wish you all a merry and happy Christmas.
With compliments of the season,
Yours truly,
Dr. F. E. Stearns.
