Liang, was denied a chance to enter Phillips Academy and was, therefore, compelled to seek another school. I can't conceive of anything that could have disturbed me more than have the facts which have just come to my attention; and I hasten to write this word of explanation and apology to you. My assistant neglected to call my attention to the case at all, since he failed completely to identify Mr. Liang and to realize his personal relations to me. When I heard that Mr. Liang's boy was at Exeter, I was a bit surprised because the father had assured me that, if his son was not able to enter college on his arrival in America, he would send him to Andover where we have had ever since the days of Liang Cheng Tung a steady and fine delegation of Chinese boys. When this last news came to me, therefore, I was distressed and, frankly, a good bit hurt. I made inquiries among the Chinese boys in my own house and in school and they were as much at a loss as I to account for the situation. This morning Mary Sun, who has been a member of my family circle for the past two years, told me that her brother had just written her that young Liang had told him that he had applied for admission at Andover and been told that there was no room. This announcement sent me in a hot haste to the office where I found the correspondence between you and my assistant. Naturally I am very much upset, for I am afraid that Mr. Liang, Senior, will find it difficult to understand how the thing could have happened. It is true that we have steadily turned away scores of applicants for admission because the limit of enrollment has long been reached, if not indeed exceeded. On the other hand, I assured Mr. Liang, and I stood ready to make the promise good, that I would gladly give up one of the extra rooms in my own house in case there should be no vacancies outside. This is exactly what I did in the cases of the Suns, four of whom were in my household last year and three of whom still remain and two of their young friends who accompanied them from China. All of this group came to me through the friendly interests of Mr. Liang, Senior, and I would naturally have been ready and glad to do even more for his own boy than for strangers. I think you can appreciate, therefore, something of my feeling in discovering what has happened. I suppose you may think it a bit late to consider the possibility of a change of school for the boy at this time. Personally, however, I wish very much that this might be done, unless you should deem it very unwise. The matter could be clearly explained to Mr. Perry at Exeter, who is a warm and close friend of mine and who would appreciate undoubtedly my reasons in advocating such an unusual procedure. That phase of the situation, therefore, could be properly handled, I am sure. On the other hand, our long experience with scores of these Chinese students has given us a pretty good opportunity to judge of and plan for their special needs; so that I believe we could easily overcome whatever losses might be involved in a transfer such as proposed. I have two extra rooms in my own house and would be only glad to make use of one of these for the boy, with the understanding, if desired, that the moment a suitable vacancy occurred outside it would be available for him, provided it seemed best to separate him from the other Chinese students. I trust that you will appreciate the spirit which prompts me to write in this very frank and perhaps a bit unusual way and will be equally frank in your reply. Nothing has occurred during the year that has disturbed me more than this particular affair; and I mean to do everything in my power to straighten out the tangle and make amends for the sins of omission and commission of myself and my assistant. May I ask you to return the examation [sic] papers when you are through with them. We find that he is especially weak in mathematics and that he has had no modern language whatever, (except Chinese and English). Cornell would be a rather favorable institution for him to enter because, if he secures a certificate record, we can get him in there without his taking the College Board examinations. It is not an easy matter, however, to get this "B" average, especially as he is way behind in the two subjects mentioned above. I find, however, that he is quite well qualified intellectually in English though the requirements for reading that he must meet are rather long; and that he will probably get along quite easily in Physics. He must, however, have at least two years of French and he is technically due to have three years of Mathematics, which may by tutoring be shortened to two. My conclusion is that he ought not to think of trying to get into Cornell in one year, even if he can stand extraordinary pressure of studies. Any engineering course, as you know, requires strong mathematical foundation, and that is his weakest point. I therefore plan to start him at the foundation in mathematics and French, hoping that with extra care he may be able in two years to accomplish enough to admit him to an engineering course in college. I have planned to go lightly on the technical work, specializing largely in drawing, with a minimum of shopwork. In fact, I consider him a special student and not classified according to our momenclature [sic]. I will give him a seat with our college preparatory juniors. T. Liang) has just come here from China and my friend wishes him, if possible, to go to Cornell as soon as he is able to do so. My friend, Liang Yu Ho, spent a day or two in Andover, I believe, a year or two ago where some of his young student friends were and perhaps are now. Liang wrote me early in the summer asking if I would be willing to act as guardian for Tommy and his sister Grace, and later suggested that Tommy round out his secondary education at the Technical High School in this city, where in the past a half dozen boys, young friends or relatives of Liang and Tong Shiu Yi, over whom my father and I exercised a guardianship, had received their education,-and whence they had gone to various technical schools and colleges. So, I took no steps toward placing Tommy anywhere else until it appeared, after talking with the Principal of the school here and watching his career for a couple of weeks, that a prep school was the place for him. I knew Liang’s strong predilection for Andover and wrote accordingly, and feeding that Andover might be unable to take him, also asked my son-in-law, Myron Williams, who is one of the instructors at Exeter, if it could be arranged for Tommy's reception there, in case he could not go to Andover. Hence the situation. As you can readily understand, I appreciate most fully your very generous offer and in spite of the fact that it might be unfortunate to unsettle Tommy's career by a shift at this time or in the near future, the unusual advantages of such a change through your offer, are so evident that my only hesitation is on account of the financial question involved. While Liang is relatively wealthy, he has I know, a large demand upon his exchequer, not only for his own family, but through his feeling, common to all the Chinese of his age and station, of responsibility toward many others not so fortunate, related in some way to him, and unless some arrangement could be made with Dr. Perry, whereby his fees already paid and presumably to be paid could be rebated, I should hesitate to make the change this school year. If, however, you think this can be done, I most heartily approve of it. Let me thank you again for writing so fully in the matter. Liang and his cousin Tong came to my father in the seventies; we grew up together as youngsters during the period that they were here and Liang has stayed with me more or less on his later visits to this country, so that I am delighted to feel that his youngest child may have the opportunity of getting his schooling with you and the more keenly so if he may have the benefit of your personal influence. Dr. Perry is to be my guest Saturday in connection with our annual football contest with his school; and I will have a good opportunity to explain to him the complications that have developed over young Liang's school connection, and I am sure that he will understand fully and cooperate in a generous way. If any question arises in regard to fees due or already paid at Exeter, we shall be ready and glad to waive the first half year's payment here. There is no reason, therefore, why there should be any extra expense involved in the change. In justice to Mr. Liang this is as it should be; for I know from experience that our Chinese friends, regardless of their individual means, are, in the large majority of cases, very eager that their children should learn by actual restraint in expenditure the value of money. Mr. Liang has often told me of his intimate relations with and affection for your family. My own associations with the Chinese began when Liang Chontung, one of that early group of Chinese Pioneers, returned to this country as Ambassador and almost at once visited his old school at Andover. We made a good deal of him at the time; and I had the privilege of passing several days as his guest at the Chinese Legation in Washington. On that first return visit to Andover he brought a group of boys whom he left in my charge; and, as a result of that beginning, I have had a hundred or more boys in school here during the last fifteen or twenty years and have filled the position of American guardian and adviser for some fifty of them. These most interesting relationships induced me to turn my eyes toward China, when in 1912 the trustees granted me a year's leave of absence. The warm and friendly hospitality extended so generously to me there has always been one of my most valued memories and has led to even closer and wider friendships with these most attractive people in later years. Mr. M.T. Liang, especially, had so often gone out of his way to show his friendship and goodwill that I felt all the more keenly the slip which had been made in my office in answering your letter of inquiry.
