I am sorry that the cable message acknowledging the receipt of your remittances in the children's behalf failed to reach you. The two drafts, one of $9,000.00 and the other of $6,000.00, were duly received. I have deposited this amount to the joint account of the children and myself with the Andover savings Bank which pays a 5% interest as much as the Bank permits on limited deposits. A further balance above what I deem it wise to retain on the active checking account I have deposited with the Savings Department of the local National Bank which allows a 4% interest rate. As the checking account itself also accumulates a small interest, I think that the funds can now be said to be working as effectively and safely as could be desired. Both of the children are now at summer camps, camps which have been selected with a good deal of care and where I believe the youngsters will receive the most wholesome influences, physically, intellectually, and morally. The camps are located on the same lake in New Hampshire but a few miles apart; so that it will be possible for Alfred and Helen to exchange visits occasionally. I stopped at Helen's camp a few days ago on my way down from my summer place in northern New Hampshire and had a chance to see the camp for myself and to talk with Helen and her councilors. Most of the girls are considerably younger than Helen, but I had felt that the extra advantages of the camp itself and of being near her brother would more than offset this particular limitation. Further, Helen has an exceptionally nice way of meeting those who are younger than herself and as she will very soon be thrown with older girls in school and elsewhere, I am not reluctant to allow her to continue for this short period, at least, the contact of those who will profit by her interest and leadership. I doubt whether Alfred will be able to enter Phillips Academy next fall, though we can tell a bit better at the end of the summer. Evidently he needs another year of thorough grounding in elementary subjects before he can tackle successfully the higher subjects of our Junior or lowest class. I agree with you as to the unfortunate situation in which so many Western educated Chinese students find themselves at home, and I shall certainly have this in mind definitely in trying to figure out the lines along which Alfred should pursue his higher education. He is still very immature and has not developed that serious purpose and good judgment which will doubtless come with the passing years and which his sister possesses to an unusual degree for one of her age. Alfred works only under pressure, while Helen eagerly grasps whatever opportunities for learning come her way. I am glad that these have finally reached their destination, though I am not quite sure that all of them have gone through. Helen and Alfred have both returned from their summer camps and are passing a few days with Dr. and Mrs. Nye in South Weymouth. Helen called me up on the phone last night, and I expect them back here tomorrow or the first of the coming week. They will have another week or two on their hands before the next school year opens for them. It is very difficult to plan wisely for these broken periods that occur between the close of the regular school year and the opening of summer camps and again the close of the summer camp season and the opening of the new school year. It has been my experience with all of my Chinese wards that these periods are not only the most difficult to handle wisely but are likely also to prove the most expensive. I have decided to send Alfred back to the Mont Vernon School for the coming year, and for the reasons already explained in my earlier letters and of which you have been good enough to express your personal approval. Plans for Helen’s work this year have not yet been fully consummated, but I shall take her over within a few days to Bradford Academy, one of the best of our New England schools for girls, and discuss with the authorities there whether she is ready for work of that grade. Bradford has recently developed what is known as a Junior College course which carries the pupil through work approximating the work of Freshman and Sophomore years in the regular colleges. It is designed to give a well rounded education to those who do not wish or are not seemingly qualified to do the higher college work. I am inclined to think that something of this sort would be well suited for Helen, since you do not favor, apparently, the regular college course for her. I am not sure, however, that she has had enough work to date to enable her to undertake such a course, and it may be wise, therefore, to allow her to return to the Whittier School for still another year’s preparation. Mrs. Russell, the principal of that school, feels that Helen should have this extra year there, and I would favor it myself, and perhaps unreservedly, if it were not for the fact that most of the girls there are distinctly younger than Helen and I am anxious to have her enjoy the companionship of more girls of her own age. Another factor that enters into the situation is that I don’t wish to locate Helen, if I can help it, too far from her brother or from me. There are excellent schools scattered through the East, several of which I should consider in every way suitable for Helen in this stage of her development, but they are for the most part at some distance from us here and would involve crossing large cities, like New York, on the journey to and from. This presents a big problem, for, even when Alfred and Helen have occasion to cross Boston, I am accustomed to have some responsible person take them in change, as do not feel that they, or Alfred at least, are quite ready to assume responsibilities of this kind for themselves. I note your suggestions about books for the children, and I will from time to time secure books of the character you have mentioned and present them as presents from you and Mrs. Tsai, as you have requested. Helen is immensely interested in good literature already, and I hope and believe that we shall eventually stir something of this desirable enthusiasm in Alfred as well. Your own experience corresponds with mine, for it was not until well into my college course that I became thoroughly interested in my work and ambitious to make the most out of the opportunities offered me. While I am sorry to hear that you are unhappy at the camp I am sure that you will appreciate the fact that it is of course impossible for me to make other arrangements for you at this late date. Further I know of no better arrangements for you at that could have been made for you even earlier, unless possibly at Long Lake Lodge where you would have been required to work hard all summer on your studies. I have asked Mr. Sanborn to see that you do some steady and needed study at your present camp for your Andover examinations were terribly disappointing and indicate clearly that it is a serious question whether without a good deal of further study you could hold your place at Andover even in our first and lowest class. On the basis of the Andover exams you have very little to show for your two years at Mt. Vernon and it is time that you realized that you are no longer a child with play and a good time your chief interest in life. Frankly, I should be inclined to regard your appeal to be near Helen with more seriousness if you had shown, when you were with her, a greater brotherly interest. You will not have forgotten, I am sure, how constantly you left her alone in Andover while you went to the movies or did other things that happened to please you. Helen was the lonely and homesick one then, but my repeated requests to you to consider her interests and do more to entertain and make her happy brought little if any response. Your plain duty now is to buckle down to some hard and conscientious work and prepare yourself as best you can to meet the Andover requirements in the fall. Otherwise we shall have to give up the Andover plan altogether and seek another small school that has a reputation for hard work and exacting discipline. If we have to do this it will be an admission to the world that you were either unable or unwilling to meet the standards of Phillips Academy; and that would be little less than disgrace and a cause for real pain to your father. Whatever Alfred really needs in the way of camp equipment I shall be perfectly willing to have you purchase. On the other hand since he will have each slight use for most camp material I should much prefer to have him rent these things for the current summer if this can be done. As for the tutoring I hardly know what to say. Alfred tried the exams for admission to our Lower Middle year but failed them pretty badly. In my opinion he needs more than anything else some stiff drill in English, grammar and composition, spelling, etc., and work in Algebra and perhaps Arithmetic. He ought to be able to take our second year French but I doubt whether he can make it and I imagine that it would be a waste of time to work on that subject this summer. My advice would be for you to write, or telephone to Mr. Lynde who is in charge of the admissions at Andover and ask him what he thinks Alfred should work at in view of his previous work at Mont Vernon and the character of his entrance examination papers.
