I shall be only too glad to aid you as far as I can in completing arrangements for the boy’s admisison. The Abbot House and Bancroft Cottage are both good buildings. Unfortunately, however, the Bancroft has no single Is rooms or suites, and the single rooms Abbot House are on the fourth floor, up under the roof „ and far from attractive. There are several single rooms and suites in the Katon and Andover Cottages, and these in my judgment are about the best that can be had, though their desirability renders them as a rule easy prey to the old boys. The next choice in my judgment, if a single room is essential, would be Phillips or Bartist Mall. He stated that you had not said that John could not come back in the fall but had merely written advising against his prospective room-mate. I realized that you were going to let him come back, but what I wanted to get was your personal opinion as to whether it would be wiser to send him to some smaller school for a year before having him return to Andover. I believe that Mrs. Mitchell will be guided wholly in this matter by whatever you advise and will probably send him for next year, if you think it best, to any school that you may name. I should be sorry, however, not to see him take his last; year or two at Phillips. If he is going back to Andover in the fall, I should suppose it would be advisable to have him tutored for at least a month and he ought to start in at once. I spent Sunday in Milwaukee with Mrs. Mitchell who had just returned from Japan. She was very anxious as to the best plan for John, and we talked the situation over at length. I told her that I would write you about the matter or would see you soon in Andover. She too is inclined to think that it might be wise to have John go to some small school for next year and then perhaps to return to Andover for the last two years. Both she and I know so little about such matters that I am inclined to follow absolutely any advice which you may have to offer. I understand that your brother has a small school, or perhaps you may know of some other place which you would recommend for John for next year. My own idea is that if there is any prospect at all of his getting along in Andover that he might better stay there, but I am going to follow what you think best, and I wish that you would write me very frankly what your idea is. I expect to be in Boston next week, and if you think it worth while will be glad to come out and talk the matter over with you. I understood from your former letters that you considered that the only trouble with John was his inability or unwillingness to apply himself and that it was not in any way a tendency to wildness. If we should decide to have him go back to Andover in the fall, I will of course follow your suggestion about arranging for another room mate and would be glad to do whatever you think best toward having him retain a single room or toward his going in with some other boy whom you may have in mind. Although it was forwarded to me, my location in the wilderness caused a long delay in its receipt. It finally came just before I was about to start on a flying trip to Andover, and hence I am answering it from my office. I do not think I may add much to what I have already writ ten to you and Mr. Fox in relation to John. I know the boy can do well, and I sincerely hope he will do so if he returns to Andover. That, however, is not saying that he will, and I confess that I still have grave doubts on this score. John seems to be easily influenced, and if he happened to fall in with just the right kind of associates, his progress and development would Undoubtedly be in the right direction. Last year his tendencies seemed always to be to select the weaker members of the student body as his intimate friends. On several occasions boys who have gone to my brother at Mount Vernon have come back and finished their courses here with credit. It is difficult to know, however, just what school to recommend under the circumstances. Most schools naturally do not care to take a boy for a year only. I have heard excellent things of the Choate School at Wallingford, Conn., also of the Salisbury School at Salisbury, Conn., and am inclined to think that the right conditions could be found in any of the three mentioned. I am sorry that I cannot be of more definite assistance to you, but I confess that I feel somewhat in the dark myself as to the best course to recommend. It always disappoints me to have a boy give up hero, even temporarily, and yet I know that in many cases it is wise. If I only felt that John had developed sufficient will power of his own to carry out his good intentions, I would gladly encourage him to come back, in the hope that he would make good. His seeming immaturity in some matters, however, is the cause of concern to us all, and really forms the basis for my misgiving.
