<text>665 Yale Station
New Haven Conn.
October 5, 1922
My dear Dr. Stearns:

I am very glad to inform you that I have returned to New Haven since two nights ago after spending a good summer at home in Peking. I must apologize for not writing to you from China, as most of my time was engaged in visiting my relatives and answering the calls of friends who were both glad and interested to see me after a departure of three years from home country. I presume, however, that you have receive! a letter from my father not a long time ago.

My return home was indeed a happy event, especially when my father learned the work I had done in school and in college here. I like very much to give you a detailed account of my visit when I meet you next time either in Andover or in New Haven, which I hope will not be distant. Just now, I like to let you know that I am in very good health.

At Shanghai I called on Mr. Kung, An John’s father, at his home. To my great pleasure I was able to tell him personally the happenings after the tragic accident to the best of my knowledge and your feeling and sympathy toward An John’s untimely death as I understood it. I further added that I, being a good friend of An John and under the same guardianship of Mr. Stearns, could not help expressing my deepest sympathy. I then told him that you had not received any letter from him since Antung returned to China with An John’s body, and, since I was to return to America in a short time, I should be glad to take a message from him to Mr. Stearns and explain the best I could to avoid any misunderstanding that might rise. Mr. Kung,a very approachable, kind old gentleman, spoke to me frankly that He had written you two letters thru Antung, and again he wrote you a letter(registered) on July 7th, 1922 enclosed a draft, which was, of course, after I had left America. He was glad that I came to see him and later he asked me to bring you the letter which I enclose here and asked me to explain to you when I see you.

Mr. Kung did not attempt to conceal from me his disappointment for Antung, now his only son, who has never written home for months and whose location his family never knew. In fact, he asked me if I would look for him and let him know his father’s disappointment.

He said further that he was ever grateful for your guardianship over An John and what you had done for him after the accident; and since you had impressed him with your tireless devotion to the education of Chinese boys, he would ask you not to get discouraged simply because of one accident. The words which impressed me most were, as Mr. Kung said, as long as Mr. Stearns was so Enthusiastic and so devoted to the bringing-up of Chinese boys in America as he had done for my son, it made no difference whether An John was dead or living, and I should be just as grateful". My visit was thus ended.

I am sure Mr. Kung has mentioned all the thing? you wish to know in his letter. I shall be glad to tell you more in detail when I see you.

With best wishes,
Enclosed a letter from Mr. Kung

Your very interesting letter to Mr. Barber of May 9th is at hand and since Mr. Barber is at present not in the office I am glad to take this opportunity to assure you that Yenching University will most heartily welcome you as one of the members of the Advisory Council.

We are anxious to have as our Advisors persons like yourself who already have a keen interest in China and its problems and those who, in their positions and connections in this country are likely to give wise council either along educational or business lines* Your apparent understanding of the Chinese through personal contact over a period of years should make you valuable to us.
I am interested in your statement that you visited Peking University on its former site before it became known as Yenching University. It would give us great pleasure to show you our present campus and buildings and to tell you of Yenching’s activities today.

From time to time we expect to send our Advisory Council members communications from Peking and from our New York office dealing with various aspects of China’s problems and with what Yenching is doing to aid in their solution* China is sure to become increasingly important in the history of the world and we are eager to do all in our power to build up a helpful relationship between her and our own country.

<text>You have probably read in the papers the unimaginable fantasy that is taking place here every day. Bombings of women and children, killing of innocent civilians, and the ravage of the greatest industrial center in China – Shanghai. Three of these bombings I escaped miraculously only to find sights too horrible to relate. Perhaps the most poignant of which is the young mother about to give birth. She died because she was torn by bomb fragments. The babe fell out and died a few minutes later. A refugee train was bombed killing three hundred women and children who patiently awaited the train which will take them to points of alleged safety. It is here that the tragic mother met her death. Three greatest centers of traffic, business and shopping, were bombed killing a total of one thousand. Canton suffered to the extent of about three thousand when the Japanese made sudden raids. Tientsin was massacred with gasoline poured on houses and then set on fire. All those who dared escape the flames were machined-gunned. Schools, colleges, and universities wore thoroughly and systematically razed to the ground. If this be war, the ape man is a civilization in itself.

However, we are not complaining because we know well the capabilities of the Japanese who are neighbors. But instead we are fighting although back to the wall. In the heart of every Chinese the hatred for the Japanese is deeply rooted which will never mellow with the years but will be inflamed by the most outrageous acts of mankind which have destroyed our homes, separated our loved ones, and shaken our confidence in peaceful pursuits. To the man we are ready, and should we be called to the colors the response will be overwhelming. All are ready to make the supreme sacrifice, and it will be only over the dead bodies of all able bodied Chinese that the Japanese will be able to rule. Then what will be in the victory?

The will to fight has inflamed the entire population from the highest to the most humble and from the oldest to the youngest, because we all realize that we are fighting to safeguard our principles, our nation, our existence and our civilization. We are up against primitive savagery hitherto undreamed of, but we are prepared - desperately prepared.

In our hour of stress, we look across the ocean to America for support and assistance. The bonds of friendship between the two great peoples have been traditional and is a bye word in the peace among the nations. We do not hope for the American boys to fight by our sides. Nothing is further from our minds. But why such aloofness? Why such rigid interpretation of the neutrality act? I had the happy experience of spending eleven constructive years in the states, and I quite appreciate the feelings of the people against war. But we also hate war. When it is forced upon us, however, we have no alternative but to defend our homes and hearth. The neutrality helps no one but the Japanese, and by no stretch of the imagination can I allow my mind to become convinced that the Americans are friends of the horde of primitive savages
