Dear Dr. Tenney:

I have just received your letter of the 12th inst. This morning I also received a cable message apparently from Mr.Li’s father, advising me of his wish to have the boy enter Philips Academy. The boy himself appeared later and said that he would be prepared to begin his work here by the end of the current week.

The final decision comes to me as a good deal of a surprise. Since my earlier correspondence with you I had seen or heard nothing of the boy and had made up my mind that he had not been able to secure his father’s consent as he had hoped, and that as a result he had returned to Amherst or had taken up his work somewhere else with your approval. I do not quite understand the reason for the delay, unless his father wished to hear from you as well as from the boy before making a definite decision. My fear is that the unsettled condition of the boy’s mind thus far this term will make it rather difficult for him to adjust himself to the work of our classes here, but I am hopeful that his natural ability may make it possible for him to overcome his handicap.

If it is your wish I shall be glad to act as the boy’s guardian as you have suggested, though your experiences in handling the funds of various Chinese boys. And your knowledge of their tastes, would naturally render you a more satisfactory guardian of the funds than I could hope to be. I do wish, however, to shirk any responsibility in the matter, or to burden your unduly with the affairs of boys not directly in your charge. Please feel free therefore to follow your own best judgement in this matter.

Very sincerely yours.
Alfred E.Stearns
Principal

Dear Dr. Tenney:-

I have your letter of the 20th inst, enclosing a check for 1219.59 for payment of bills of Messrs. Tsai and Seetoo. I have sent out the individual checks, and will forward receipts to you when these have been returned to me. I am inclined to think that you have mistaken the total amount of one Mr. Bernard Reilly’s bills for athletic goods and calendars. As I understand the bills, each calls for eight dollars, though that the figure is rather blurred and hard to decipher. On your schedule apparently you have charged six dollars on Tsai's account, and eight dollars on that of Seetoo. It will not be necessary for you to adjust until the receipts are returned. In this way you will have the opportunity to see the bills for yourself, and the possibility of an error will be avoided.

Sincerely yours,

My dear Dr. Tenney:-

I have your letter of the 7th inst. Under separate cover I am mailing you circulars of two schools to which we are accustomed to recommend boys who are not quite far enough advanced to meet our requirements. One is Dummer Academy, at South Byfield, Massachusetts, and the other a small home school which my brother conducts at Mont Vernon, New Hampshire. The personal touch would naturally be stronger in the latter, though even at Dummer the numbers are small enough,—from thirty to fifty, I believe,—to make it possible to give a good deal of individual attention I am inclined to think that the boy could get the foundation that he needs at either of these schools. One of our new Chinese boys, Ying Chiun Lo, was at Mont Vernon last year, and was very happy there. Lo is doing very good work with us this year. We have kept in pretty close touch with both of these schools. and hence are disposed to recommend them for boys in need of just this kind of work. There are other schools of like nature not quite so near at hand, none of which are of excellent caliber. Should you desire, I shall be glad to submit the names of some of these.

Very sincerely yours.

My dear Dr. Tenney:

I have received and read with deep interest your letter of the 7th inst. I am extremely sorry to hear of the failure of Seetoo’s father. The boy is one of the most promising of the boys we hae here. Only yesterday in faculty meeting I made careful inquiries about the work of both Tsai and Seetoo, in order to be able to help you in your decision as to their summer work. Our teachers spoke of Seetoo’s ability in the highest terms. In Mathematics especially he is reported to be unusually strong – one of the very best in the school. Naturally we don’t want to give him up.

We will gladly extend to the boy for the coming year full scholarship aid. That means that his entire tuition will be remitted him. Rather than lose him, I will gladly make some arrangement whereby his room will be taken care of also, and I am further confident that if the case demands, I can secure outside assistance from some source that will enable him to meet the other expenses which he must face here. If it is a question merely of finances, he must not be allowed to stop at this point. Only last year our Trustees passed a special vote at my request authorizing me to advise the Chinese XX that xx scholarship would be thrown open to Chinese students on the same terms as those on which they are available for Americans andinviting recommendations from him of boys deserving such aid. Seetoo has clearly prevoed his right to assistance of this kind. I hope, therefore, the. Matter can be satisfactorily adjusted, and that if you have difficulty in securing xxx, you will advise me before allowing the boy to desire to give up his work, in order that I may have a chance to seek help from some of those whom I believe would be interested in the case.

Very sincerely yours,
Alfred E.Stearns.

My dear Mr. Tenney:

I have your letter of recent date. The boy referred to has been here for some time, and has persistently urged that he be allowed to enter the school. From the conversations I have had both with him and with one of his friends I was led to infer that he was perhaps paying truant and I have consequently refused to allow him to become enrolled. I have told him that I could not do this without proper authorization from you or the Chinese minister. He has insisted that he was his own master in the matter, but I have maintained that if this were true it would be best proved by written endorsement from Sir Liang or yourself. At the same time I hardly felt that I had authority to order the boy out of town, and I have been in somewhat a quandry to know just what to do. I think he has been staying with one of the other Chinese boys here, though I am not quite sure as to that. I have asked our teachers not to admit him to classes.

Very truly yours.

I do not feel sure that we can see the cottages mentioned by you, since none of these are furnished, and it would be rather difficult to move all of the furniture required. We will have good accommodations, however, and I think your companions will all be satisfied.

Regarding the girls who are to come, may I ask if any arrangements will be made by them or by your for a chaperone? If not, we can probably arrange to have come one of our married instructors and his wife take charge of the house where the girls are to be located. We shall be glad to know, however, what is expected.

I am glad to hear that you have been so successful with your summer work. Don’t overwork this summer so as to be too tired out when school again begins.

Earlier in the summer I forwarded to you, in care of Mr.Fearing at Amherst, some mail which came here. I did not know your address, and thought that perhaps Mr. Fearing might. If you have not received the mail, please write to Mr. Fearing for it.

May I trouble you also to give me once more definitely the dates on which to expect the members of your Conference to reach and to leave Andover.

Very sincerely yours.

Alfred E. Stearns.

My dear Li:

Your letter of the 7th inst. with enclosed check for twenty five dollars to balance your account arrived in this morning. Accept my thanks for the letter as well as for the check. I hope the settlement at this time has not inconvenienced you.

I am delighted to hear of the successful outcome of your first term at Lafayette. That is the kind of record that we like to see all you Chinese boys make, for it will mean much to you in later life, and through you, more than you can perhaps realize to your country and the world. The opportunities which will lie before you when you return to China will be tremendous, and your people must look to you educated boys for the leadership which China is going to need in the next few of years of history. Keep up the good work while the chance is still yours, for you will never have occasion to neglect it in later years.

I appreciate very much your own and your father’s kindness is remembering Mrs. Stearns and myself at this time. I trust, however, that you will both realize that whatever I have done or can do for you while you are in this country is a privilege, and should never be thought to place you under any obligations.

Wishing you every success and satisfaction during the New year on which we are just entering, believe me,

Yours sincerely yours,

My dear Li:

Thanks for your good note received last night. I did not mean to press you unduly for settlement of your everdrawn account. I am perfectly willing to wait until the next installement of your funds in received from home, for I know from experience how short one is apt to run at the beginning of the college course. When the funds come, send along a check for the amount in question, and I shall be perfectly satisfied.

I am glad to hear that your college work and life are satisfactory to you thus far. We certainly miss you here, and it is good to get even a line from you to tell me that you are still alive and enjoying your life and work. I wish you could get up here and see us. You certainly would have enjoyed the Exeter game and the attendant celebration. Please remember that if ever you happen to be in this vicinity, you will receive a warm welcome from your old friends in Andover if you can arrange to give us a few minutes of your time.

With kind regards and sincerest good wishes, believe me, as always.

Very sincerely yours,
