Mr. Charles D. Tenney
Cambridge, Mass.
Dear Sir:
I have your favor of recent date, and as requested am mailing you a copy of our catalogue, from which I think you will be able to secure the information you desire. As you probably know, the present Chinese minister to this country has had a number of his Chinese boys with us during the past three years, and fine boys they have proved, too. One at least is to return this fall. Of course the boys he has had here had had before coming considerable elementary work, and were fairly well grounded in their English. Should you desire to place any of the boys here, it would be well to notify us as soon as possible, since our rooms are rapidly being taken, and I would naturally be desirous of placing such boys with more than the usual care.
Kindly advise me if further information is desired, and believe me,
Very truly yours.

My dear Mr. Tenney:
I am pleased to learn from your letter of the first inst. that we are to have two of your
Chinese wards with us this coming year. I shall be glad to arrange for the boys as satisfactory accommodations as possible, though I am not sure that at this late date I can find both rooms and board in a house where other conditions are what I would most desire for them. The Chinese boys whom we have had here during the last three years have regularly boarded outside of the house in which they have roomed, as most of our boys are accustomed to do. Still I have in mind one place which may prove satisfactory, and I will take up the matter at once and advise you of the results later.
I am enclosing two application blanks which I shall be pleased to have the boys fill out carefully and return to me at their early convenience. In the meantime, if you are able to come to Andover yourself I should be very glad to go over the situation with you carefully and I think we should be able to make arrangements that will prove satisfactory to all concerned. I expect to be here until Saturday noon, at least, and from the following Monday noon on through the week.
Very sincerely yours,

My dear Mr. Tenney:
I have your letter of recent date. The boy referred to has been here for some time, and has persistently urged that he be allowed to enter the school. From the conversations I have had both with him and with one of his friends I was led to infer that he was perhaps paying truant and I have consequently refused to allow him to become enrolled. I have told him that I could not do this without proper authorization from you or the Chinese minister. He has insisted that he was his own master in the matter, but I have maintained that if this were true it would be best proved by written endorsement from Sir Liang or yourself. At the same time I hardly felt that I had authority to order the boy out of town, and I have been in somewhat a quandry to know just what to do. I think he has been staying with one of the other Chinese boys here, though I am not quite sure as to that. I have asked our teachers not to admit him to classes.
Very truly yours.

My dear Dr. Tenney:-
I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your favor of the 29th
inst. enclosing a check for $320 covering bills of Messrs. Tsai and Seetoo. I enclose our Treasurer's receipt for the same. The delay is fully understood, and is of no consequence. Tsai's failure in English, I think, will not prove serious. Our experience with Chinese boys in the past shows them generally splendidly efficient in handling grammar or rhetoric, but somewhat week in composition and the use of the language in general. This is only natural, and I wonder that they do as well with them as they do.
Sincerely yours,
